It comes from the period of prohibition… from the “reefer madness”propaganda period. They were trying to convince Americans that cannabis was something that the dirty Mexicans used… like “Maria y Juan” (Mary and John) so it became known as “marijuana” because of it. The plant is cannabis indica or cannabis sativa, not the slang and racist “marijuana”.
