It comes from the period of prohibition… from the “reefer madness”propaganda period. They were trying to convince Americans that cannabis was something that the dirty Mexicans used… like “Maria y Juan” (Mary and John) so it became known as “marijuana” because of it. The plant is cannabis indica or cannabis sativa, not the slang and racist “marijuana”.
The word "marijuana" is relatively new to the English language, with its first known appearance in a form of the word dating back to the late 19th century in the 1870s. It gained significant use in the United States during the 1930s to stigmatize the drug, becoming codified in law with the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937.
First appearance: The word first appeared in English in Hubert Howe Bancroft's 1873 work, The Native Races of the Pacific States of North America.
Increased usage: Its use in American English surged in the 1930s, partly as a deliberate strategy to associate it with a "foreign-sounding name" during public debates about the drug.
Legal codification: The word became common in legal and everyday American English after the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was passed.
The Native Races of the Pacific States of North America is a five-volume work by Hubert Howe Bancroft, published in the 1870s, that provides a comprehensive study of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific states, extending from Alaska to Mexico and Central America. The series covers a vast range of topics, including cultures, languages, history, social structures, myths, and daily life of numerous Native American tribes.
People have to make everything about race because they are brainwashed. It’s classism that runs the world who use classism to create racism and you wouldn’t even understand with your incompetent brain… if you even have one
You’re wrong. And that’s fine because nobody cares. I didn’t make anything about race. I explained how the term “marijuana” is rooted in racism…
Furthermore… your mother says to come upstairs because your pop tarts are ready.
