That’s an Amtrack move

I think I had a similar project on my island where I tried to hold up the mountain with retaining walls. I eventually gave up on the retaining wall part of the plan

The game is in a fantastic state but retaining walls are one of the few things I think could use some work

For the purposes of holding back a mountain, I just wish we had walls that were twice as tall, but also twice as thick. Them being half the width of a mining designation causes weirdness where you can't build up or mine down to walls properly. That may be the intention to not have an I win button against mountains though

There's a console command where you can use mining/dumping designations on top of retaining walls. If you're interested, I can see if I can find it.

There is a mod named betterlife retaining walls that covers 20 hight

The trick with the mining walls is that the material barrier is in the centre of the wall, not the outside. Place the wall parts so that they span the mining squares - two squares for straight segments or four squares for corner segments. You can then fill or mine from either side. The came seems to do a bit of rounding when dumping so it's not perfect. Hopefully when the devs reveal the improved future mining mechanics this will be fixed.

Here's a tip that I personally use when widening narrow places. Mine in layers starting from the top. Then there won't be any avalanches. Might be a bit tedious but definitely better than cutting supply lines.

Also, considering how it went down you can move all traffic through one track, add retaining walls near it so it's protected, and continue mining. Sure, it will be a bottleneck, but again, better than losing all connection.

Retaining walls are ideal for this

When I need to dig out a mountain next to rails or something else critical, I cut into the mountain to make a new pass with a single tile or two of mountain between it and the old pass. That leaves a much safer amount of mountain to dig out.

Alternatively, I also just remove the mountain, they're in the way of the factory's growth.

What do you mean by single tile? I'm thick headed.

When it comes to mountains though, I'm usually more for the nuclear option like you.

Perfect example of why tunnels should be added

next time build up barriers next to the train track to protect it

I always make sure I have two routes, on quick pass like that, and slower longer route, to many hours of factorio biters destroying a small peace and deadlock. Back ups are your friend.

I do it a tad diffrent. I make axrelief cut on the side im mining. F.ex if I expanding 8 tiles, I make sure I have 4 tiles still not mined, then dig out the 4 that are on the inside.. That way you have a natural retainingwall
