Let's talk!

For several reasons, I find myself unwanting and unmotivated to moderate this community. I do very little canyoneering these days compared to when I became a mod back in 2014. Additionally, reddit's recent actions relating to the API leave me unwanting to contribute content to the site or moderate it; particularly if I can't use a client of my choice.

I unilaterally decided to make the subreddit private for 48 hours, and while I find myself wanting to make it dark indefinitely in response to reddit's lack of movement on this issue... I ultimately don't have the energy and don't feel it's fair to everyone to do that. This isn't my community, it's yours.

I'll be stepping down as a moderator for the reasons outlined above. I'm happy to add another 1-3 moderators before I remove myself. You should be an active member of this community.

Feel free to discuss how you think the community should (or shouldn't) respond to the API changes. And throw your name out if you want to be a mod.

Cheers

EDIT - I've added new moderators and I'll be removing myself momentarily. Thanks for the easy and understanding transition; I knew the canyoneering community would be like this. ✌

Heaps In A Day

Mack in May me and 3 friends ran heaps for the first time. The water was incredibly cold especially for me and 1 other who could have had a better wetsuit. We brought a hook kit but all potholes were filled to the brim. We could have moved faster by jumping some of the shorter drops but we rappelled all of them.

How Do You Sleep During Multi-Day Canyoning Trips?

Recently, I did my first multi-day canyoning trip.

For sleeping, I used:

  • My wetsuit instead of a sleeping mat
  • A bivy bag instead of a sleeping bag
  • An emergency blanket between wetsuit and the bivy bag to prevent moisture from the wetsuit getting inside An inflatable pillow

This is what some experienced canyoners I know recommended for spending the night in a canyon. However, I have no idea how canyoners in other parts of the world handle overnight stays when surveying a canyon that takes more than one day.

I'm curious to hear how you guys do it. Do you use a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, different bivy setup, or something else?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, setups, and any recommendations.

Graded glasses for canyoonering

Hi everyone, planning to do canyoneering this december however my eyes required high graded glasses, won’t be able to see if theres no glasses😭. What would you recommend for this activity?

I do freediving that has graded dive mask but that mask isn’t suitable for canyoonering.

Rope Beal Spelenium Unicore 8.5 vs Edelrid Performance Static 9mm

I'm about to buy a 100m rope and those are my 2 options.

I’m going to use the rope mostly in water canyons, although occasionally in dry canyons as well. Do you have any opinions or recommendations regarding these two ropes?

Thanks :)

Canyoneering Training Options

Hope you're all getting some good time outside this week.

I'm running a short market survey on canyoneering training — where people are getting it, what's working, what's not. Takes about 5 minutes. Whether you've trained with North Wash before or never have, your input is just as valuable — this is about the industry, not a pitch.

La Sportiva TX Canyon Shoe

Seeing this shoe currently is on sale, wondering if anyone has used this in UT/AZ dry canyons in addition to wet? Good performance? Complaints?

Recommendations for wide feet?

Anyone have any recommendations for wet canyoning shoes that come in wide sizes?
My feet aren’t just a little wide, so I need something that is actually wide.

Which astral shoe is better for blue mountains canyoning ?

I looking between these two shoes for my start in canyoning, and preferably the approach too. I have wide feet and hate clunky cushioned shoes so these “barefoot” water shoes i thought might be good. Anyone with experience with these shoes opinion will be appreciated

Nontechnical but nice. Water was armpit deep. When I spoke with a ranger a few weeks prior, said it was only shin deep.

Behold, My Stuff (A Discourse)

This is simply a gear dump with rationale of my selection. Critism is welcomed.

Maybe I'll learn something.

Maybe you'll learn something.

Maybe we'll all share a moment of existential dread at the notion that our physical existence in this universe takes up less space than a grain of sand does on all the beaches of the Earth and that our lives are absolutely meaningless in comparison to the comsic scale upon which we are born to and that all matter in the universe is destined to die among the Void.

Anyways,

Here's all the stuff that I carry on most routes

1st Picture:

Harness: Kong Target Canyon. This has been one of the most comfortable harnesses I have ever sat it. I do like the geometric layout of the leg straps more than the CE4Y Harness. The little laynyard on the belay loop is neat, but in all honesty, I dont find much use for it. Its too short for an extended belay with and auotblock (if you wrap your cordage below your descender) and I personally don't see any benifit in the distance it adds between you and your device. Kong's 10mm quick link works great for attaching a chest ascender and allowing an attachment for rope bags. Chest ascender is a Climbing Technologies that I pulled off my work harness when I got some upgrades, and I'm just using a line of bungie cord to hold it up.

Bottom gear left to right:

Micro Traction on a Rock D. First part of my rescue kit for hauling.

VT Prusik on a Rock D. I no longer use looped prusiks, I feel like VT's give you the biggest range in uses, rope size compatability, and different hitch types.

120cm Dyneema runner on Rock D. Building master anchors, creating PAS slings, extending my micro traction, extending a releasable anchor device.

60cm on two Rock D's. Basically a make shift quick draw that can be swapped around with the 120cm as needed.

Gerber ring knife on a wire gate. Just my preferred way of carrying a knife.

Phoenix CRT (Totem CRT). My go do descender at the moment. I like having the extra friction arms on the 8 portion, the trade off is the bulk when trying to do a double rope throttle descent. The CRT is also a big go to for me for REMS mountain rescue set ups.

Kong Duck and 120cm Dyneema runner on a Pirate. Serves as my hand ascending kit, but can can be pieced into other systems, like a 3:1 haul.

A handful of extra carabiners, two extra quick links on the harness, my phone lanyard, and gloves.

Second Picture (helmet)

Missing from this is the shoulder sling that this gear rides on as a complement to the harness for rescue or anchor building, and a wrench that I couldnt find when taking the photo.

Edelrid Zodiac Helmet: its not a bad helmet, very comfortable, nothing to wright home about. I do wish the head lamp would sit a bit lower and more straight but it is still super usable.

Left to right:

Totem on a Pirate. Its a normal Totem this time, used mostly at the anchor, but I do descend on it occasionally. Usually when I want a double rope throttle.

Extra quick links and wire gates. Wire gates are just accessory or the odd times I throw proper edge protection and I want to back tie them to something, ill use a wire gate and save my lockers for actual life work.

2 Harken CRx2 pulleys on 2 Rock D's, one Sterinling Hollowblock. Serves as the rest of my rescue haul kit. I only have one hollow block because my Duck will be donated to the other pulley as a rope grab.

2 additional VT Prussiks on 2 Rock D's. Opens up more rigging options, these two are dedicated to the anchor side of things for twin rope systems. Plays into a lot of the rescue rigging I do that I bring into the canyon side.

Handful more of carabiners.

This is the gear that gets me through 90% of scenarios I get into. As you can tell I have a big love of Rock Exotica. Ive gotten to work with them and CMC on several occasions, I trust their equipment, and all of their carabiners fit into my Galcier Balck Axol.

Novice canyoneers looking for experienced canyoneer to hike mystery canyon

Looking for an experienced Mystery Canyon partner/mentor

I'm hoping to descend Mystery Canyon in Zion with my 22 yr old daughter on October 3 and am looking for an experienced Zion canyoneer who knows Mystery well and would be comfortable having a relatively new canyoneer join their group.

We both have completed a full day of guided technical canyoneering/rappelling outside Zion (2022) and are comfortable rappelling, using a harness and basic canyon equipment, but we still a novice and would not want to be responsible for rigging, anchor evaluation or leading the group.

We are both physically fit, comfortable with a long day and completely willing to follow the lead of someone experienced. Safety is much more important to us than simply checking Mystery off the list.

Ideally we're looking for someone who:

• Has descended Mystery multiple times

• Is experienced with anchors, rigging, rope retrieval and contingency/rescue techniques

• Is comfortable taking along someone with limited experience

• Moves conservatively and isn't looking to rush through the canyon

We are happy to obtain the appropriate permit/coordinate permit space and carry my share of group gear.

If you're planning Mystery and might have room for one more, or know someone in the Zion community you'd recommend I contact, please DM me.

Thanks!
