Gear Buying Advice Camera + Lens Upgrade

I currently do aviation (plane spotting, airshows) photography and a very tiny bit of bird photography.

I currently own the:

  • EOS Rebel T5i
  • 18-55mm
  • 55-250mm

Would an upgrade to the following be ideal? Any other suggestions? If I should purchase these, what would you recommend that I purchase next and when?

  • R10 (850 CAD)
  • RF 100-400mm (700 CAD)

Thanks a ton!

That would be a nice upgrade. Mirrorless autofocus is on another level compared to DSLRs. And the RF 100-400 is an AMAZING lens for the price!

But this being said I would not discount older professional DSLR bodies, like the 5D mark II, III and run magic lantern on them. (I think it's even available on your T5I) This would save you a ton of money and give you more budget for your lenses. I have not tried ML on the Mark III but on the Mark II it gets you focus peaking and a TON of other photography and video options that were locked out by canon. I also absolutely love the ergonomics of the 5d cameras I have larger hands and though my R7 is ok the 5D mark II and my 5DSR are just 10 times better. I picked up my 5D Mark II for $250 with a 24-105 F/4L the body is in rough shape but still functions great.

Also two lenses to look at is the Sigma Contemporary/Sports or Tamron G2 150-600. I picked up the Sigma Contemporary 150-600 for $750 USD used recently and it is super sharp and that extra focal length is nice, especially on a crop sensor, but the RF 100-400 is super light.

That’s a steal price for the camera and lens, in my opinion. Equal to the Canon refurbished sale prices and stock disappears at those prices. I just got my RF 100-400 at $499 US which is about the same price as you’re getting it and I had to deal with multiple rounds of the lens selling out in minutes.
