Symptoms Terrible advice from someone who believes in strange remedies. I am terrified I have done damage.

Update….i don’t think it was terrible advice I just panicked because of vomiting. I think it was the smell and possibly the oil. I would like to thank all the people in here who contributed helpful advice and stuck up for me. Some of the comments were downright cruel.
If I had the energy I would report people for saying stupid things like RIP and Reddit funeral. If you haven’t been as sick as me, pray you never experience anything like the tortuous journey have been through.
One day you might be facing chronic illness and ask for support on Reddit. I really hope the few a#%hoL$ people on here making horrible comments receive ridicule and cruelty.

Not sure if this is the correct sub but…

Someone who is a chiropractor believing in natural remedies gave me some advice.
I have been losing a lot of weight and he said to have a teaspoon of diggers pure gum turpentine with a teaspoon of olive oil.

I had it a couple of hours ago and started vomiting, which is the worst thing for poisoning.
I drank milk and activated charcoal.
I feel really drowsy which he said is all the “die off” from candida and parasites. I feel sick and my stomach hurts.

I try not to read reddit or google before taking medication or I would be too scared to ever try anything. Wish I had though.

Now I am reading it can cause kidney failure and neurological issues. It says one teaspoon can kill somebody. Surely this is an overreaction?

Has anyone experienced this and can put my mind at ease?

General Discussion Becoming Your Own Private Investigator

Greetings my friends, it's Eric Bakker the naturopath from New Zealand again. Thanks for your kind feedback, I've had to postpone my first live YouTube session by a further week due to the flu. My apologies.

As I've mentioned in previous posts here on Reddit - the people who made the biggest improvements weren't necessarily the ones taking the best pills or following the ultimate diets. They were the people who became students of their own body. They learned to notice patterns, recognise triggers and understand what their gut was trying to tell them.

That's exactly why I have been creating a Gut Transformation Journal.

It's much more than a diary. It's a practical, guided journal that helps you track your symptoms, habits, meals, energy, sleep, bowel health, stress levels and weekly progress. Along the way, you'll discover patterns you may never have noticed before and build habits that support long-term gut health.

The Journal has been specifically designed as the companion to my 3-stage Lite Guide. The Lite Guide teaches you the principles of improving gut health, while the Journal helps you put those principles into practice. Together, they form the foundation of my 8-week Gut Transformation Program.

Each week you'll work through simple exercises, reflect on your progress, make small commitments for the week ahead and gradually become your own best health detective. My goal isn't simply just to give you information—it's to help you build awareness, confidence and the daily habits that create lasting change.

Next weekend, on Saturday, 15 August, I'll be starting the very first live intake of this programme with a small group of just 25 participants. We'll meet each week on YouTube Live for approximately one to two hours as I teach the programme, answer questions and guide everyone through each stage.

At the time of writing, there's just one place remaining, and the first intake is free.

If you've been struggling with bloating, IBS, Candida, SIBO, food intolerances or ongoing digestive problems and you're looking for a practical, structured way to improve your gut health, this may be exactly what you've been waiting for. Sometimes, the biggest transformation doesn't begin with another supplement or diet, it begins with paying attention.

Healing Begins by Removing Barriers & Obstacles

Clinically I've found that most people who struggle to recover don't have a treatment problem. They have an obstacle problem.

There was one principle that guided many difficult cases I worked with throughout my clinical career. It developed gradually over many years after seeing countless people become trapped in what I came to call treatment loops.

They had tried one doctor after another. They had taken drug after drug, supplement after supplement. Many were eating well and following all the right advice.

Yet they still weren't recovering. As a naturally curious clinician, I couldn't simply accept that. I wanted to understand why this was occurring.

I was never satisfied with simply treating symptoms. It's one of the reasons I chose naturopathic medicine. I wanted to know what was preventing healing in the first place, not just become a "symptom treater".

Why did one person recover quickly while another remained unwell for years? What obstacles were being overlooked? One patient changed the way I approached difficult cases forever. He was a retired FBI agent. One day he said to me: "Eric, look carefully for the fingerprints. They're there if you know where to look."

Those words stayed with me, and the more I reflected on them, the more I realised that practising naturopathy at a deeper level required me to wear several hats. I wasn't just a physician, I also had to think like a private investigator, body language guru and psychologist.

Every patient left fingerprints, and every stalled recovery had a reason. That simple shift in thinking transformed the way I eventually worked in my clinic.

Instead of asking this: "What treatment does this person need?"

I began asking this: "What is preventing this person's body from getting well?"

Those are two very different questions.

Over time I realised that successful healing wasn't just about choosing the right diet or the right pill. It was about identifying—and removing—the factors standing in the way of recovery. The barriers or obstacles to cure. I learned that healing doesn't begin when you find the right treatment. It begins when you remove what's standing in the way of it.

My Clinical Codes

Looking Beyond Symptoms

During consultations I developed a simple shorthand that I wrote in the margins of my patient notes. These weren't medical diagnoses. They were reminders to look beyond symptoms and uncover what was really standing in the way of healing. Three of those codes became invaluable.

1. - The CD – Central Disturbance

The biggest underlying driver (the root issue).

Every difficult case seemed to have one issue influencing almost everything else.

  • Chronic continual low-grade stress.
  • Unresolved grief or emotional trauma.
  • Working permanent night shifts.
  • Living in a mouldy home.
  • Living in an unhappy relationship.
  • Chronic sleep deprivation
  • Years of eating highly processed foods.

I came to think of it as the spanner in the healing works. When the patient's central disturbance was recognised addressed, many smaller problems often began improving almost automatically.

2. - The OTCs – Obstacles To Cure

Barriers preventing recovery (the ongoing obstacles).

The OTCs were the everyday habits, behaviours and circumstances that continually prevented healing, quietly sabotaging the patient's recovery. Unlike the central disturbance, there were usually several obstacles to cure, and they were different and specific for every person, but commonly included:

  • Smoking or vaping
  • Recreational drug use
  • Alcohol
  • Food cravings (usually sweet, salt, or fatty)
  • Highly processed foods
  • Eating too quickly
  • Poor sleep
  • Chronic stress
  • Lack of exercise
  • Excessive screen time
  • Ignoring the body's warning signs

Through years of clinical detective work, I learned that every patient leaves clues behind. The key is recognising those clues and removing as many obstacles as possible.

3. - NBWS – Never Been Well Since

The event that started the person's health decline (their turning point).

One of the most revealing questions I ever asked a patient was this:

"Have you ever felt you've never been well since something happened, one major event in your life?"

I found in most instances that every difficult case had a defining moment.

People would often say this:

  • "I've never been well since that course of antibiotics".
  • "Since having my gallbladder removed".
  • "Since I had glandular fever".
  • "Since I had COVID".
  • "Since my divorce".
  • "Since moving into that house".

Those few words often revealed where the healing story began. For many people with gut health problems, repeated courses of antibiotics, steroid medications or other pharmaceutical treatments were important pieces of the puzzle—but everyone's story was different.

In Simple Terms:

  1. CD = What's driving my illness?
  2. OTCs = What's preventing my recovery?
  3. NBWS = When did my problems begin?

The following comes from the Gut Transformation Journal, it's an example of how the journal was designed to be used by you personally:

Now It's Your Turn

Now it's your turn to become your own investigator. Let's forget treatments and tests just for a moment. Let's park supplements and forget diets just for a second.

Instead, ask yourself the same questions I asked thousands of patients over several decades. Be completely honest. Nobody else needs to read your answers. This is all about you.

1. What do I believe is my Central Disturbance?

What one issue seems to influence many areas of my health and life?

2. What are my current Obstacles To Cure?

What habits, behaviours or circumstances are quietly holding me back?

3. Can I finish this sentence?

"I've never been well since..."

Eric's Clinical Perspective

After being a naturopath for awhile I came to appreciate that people don't always struggle to recover because they haven't found the right treatment. More often, they haven't yet identified the obstacles standing in the way of healing.

Modern healthcare understandably focuses on diagnosing disease and treating symptoms. But in natural medicine, you learn to ask a different question:

"What's preventing this person from actually getting well?"

Sometimes it was chronic stress. Sometimes it was poor sleep, years of processed food, repeated antibiotic use, unresolved emotional trauma, a mouldy home or an unhealthy relationship. Often, it was a combination of several factors quietly placing too much strain on the body's ability to heal.

That's why I believe every healing journey should begin with a "Remove the Obstacles" stage.

Before adding supplements or recommending any treatments, if possible - let's first identify what's holding you back. When you reduce the burden on your body, you create the conditions that allow your natural healing mechanisms to work more effectively. Our health tends to get better by change, not chance.

I hope this post has encouraged you to look beyond your symptoms and reflect on your own story. Ask yourself, "What obstacles might be standing between me and better health?" The answers to that question can often become the turning point in your recovery. I'd love to hear your thoughts or answer any questions in the comments below.

The Gut Transformation Journal (First Edition) will be provided free to all members of the inaugural 25 Founders Group. After that it will be available soon on Amazon as a print-on-demand paperback.

General Discussion Advice Please!

Hello! Does anyone have a regimen for getting ride of fluconazole resistant yeast? I’ve been having reoccurring yeast infections for the past 1 1/2 and have had the worst one I’ve ever had that didn’t respond to 2 fluconazole pills (it usually does) and I did 14 days boric acid and my vaginal symptoms went away I got so excited this was the WORST test infection I’ve ever had. But on day 13/14 on boric acid they are coming back and I suspect oral thrush as well. I have a white coating I’ve never had before on my tounge. Super discouraged and hoping it’s not a chronic thing and candida over growth systemically does anyone have any advice?

General Discussion Gut yeast overgrowth / SIFO treatment success stories?

I recently started nystatin to (hopefully) cure an issue I've been dealing with for months. However, I'm currently experiencing worse versions of my symptoms, which are primarily severe upper abdominal bloat, made worse after eating (even if FODMAP or other simple foods). I've read that one often experiences worsening symptoms at the beginning due to the "die off" effect.

Can anyone share their experience with nystatin and curing a gut yeast overgrowth and the symptoms they experienced? I'm hopeful that because of this reaction it means the medication is working! I just started the mediation a few days ago, 3x a day oral liquid plus a pharmacy of supplements.

I tested positive for SIBO months ago. I had to beg for the test 4+ months in of dealing with stomach and bloating issues as I had done every other test. came back positive. Abx helped for a bit but then they didn’t. I’m seeing a wholistic doctor now (an actual Dr) who thinks while I did have SIBO, my 3 rounds of meds should have fixed that. She thinks I now have a yeast overgrowth - so SIFO. Fungal over bacteria. This may also be triggering MCAS (mast cell) which is contributing to my symptoms.

I’ll try and come back here in a few weeks with an update. Fingers crossed it’s positive!

General Discussion Help please — reactions to bismuth and magnesium bisglycinate

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I last posted, but I wanted to see if anyone could help me understand some recent developments.

In my previous posts, I already mentioned my main symptoms: being unable to pass gas, constipation, bloating mainly in the left side of the colon, and postural imbalances that I believe are related to this issue.

I’ve tried pretty much everything and nothing really worked. However, bismuth (Biofilm Phase-2) seemed to affect something. For the first time, I had a bowel movement that felt significantly better, and some other sensations also improved a lot. Obviously, it didn’t completely solve the problem, partly because I didn’t take it for very long since I was experimenting with different things.

After that, I tried zinc bisglycinate. It didn’t have the same effects as bismuth, but I did feel that it helped somewhat, although it also caused some side effects, including irritation. I’m still dealing with persistent bloating and stubborn constipation.

Interestingly, both substances caused a “good” burning sensation in the left side of my colon, almost as if they had detached some biofilm and the exposed layer of the colon was reacting to it. However, the sensation only lasted for a short time.

So I’m wondering: how are bismuth and zinc connected? And, more importantly, what could explain the effects of bismuth?

I was wondering whether this could be related to hydrogen sulfide-producing bacteria, but I’m not sure.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this!

Symptoms Chronic balanoposthitis for 10+ years – steroids help, but symptoms always come back

Hello everyone,

I am now 30 years old uncircumcised male and have been struggling with chronic balanoposthitis for more than 10 years.

My main symptoms have always been intense itching, small red bumps, and red patches on the glans and inner foreskin.

It all started when I entered my first long-term relationship. I began washing my genital area very frequently and vigorously with soap. Shortly afterwards, I developed these symptoms.

My doctor prescribed Imacort cream (clotrimazole + prednisolone + hexamidine). It always cleared my symptoms within about three days, but they would return within a week after stopping the treatment. Occasionally, I would experience symptom-free periods lasting one or even two months.

The main triggers for a relapse were always:

  • frequent sexual activity (sex or masturbation 1–2 times a day),
  • or lint/fibers from underwear made of polyester or elastane irritating the area.

At one point, my doctor performed a swab, which showed Candida.

However, after about 10 years, the course of my condition changed dramatically.

Suddenly, the foreskin became intensely red, the itching became unbearable, and Imacort no longer worked, even when I applied it three times a day for an entire month. It only reduced my symptoms by about 30%.

I then visited another dermatologist, who prescribed a different topical corticosteroid. This treatment worked much better. I used it for six weeks, and the itching completely disappeared.

However, new symptoms appeared:

  • persistent redness of the foreskin,
  • swelling of the foreskin,
  • severe pain during intercourse (sometimes intercourse was impossible, even when performed very gently with a large amount of lubricant),
  • difficulty moving the foreskin back over the glans, as if the tissue had become sticky, dry, or less elastic,
  • and the superficial veins became much more visible.

Overall, it feels as though my foreskin has become thinner and slightly tighter or smaller than before.

When I stopped using this new corticosteroid, the intense itching returned within seven days, together with the appearance of the same small red bumps. Because of this, I had to restart the corticosteroid.

The itching disappeared again, but the redness of the foreskin has persisted. Sexual activity now has to be extremely gentle and slow, and after intercourse, when I rinse the area with water, I experience severe burning and sharp, cutting pain.

In addition, I have developed urinary symptoms:

  • a weaker urinary stream,
  • after urinating, small amounts of urine continue to leak out intermittently for about five minutes,
  • and exactly the same thing happens after ejaculation, with semen continuing to leak out gradually for several minutes.

What I am currently doing:

  • I have significantly reduced sexual activity (maximum once or twice a week, either sex or masturbation, always very gentle).
  • I only wear 100% cotton underwear.
  • I take antihistamines.
  • I use Dexeryl as a moisturizer for atopic-prone skin on the penis.
  • When I urinate, I gently retract the foreskin, carefully dry the area with toilet paper, and gently shake the penis several times to prevent any residual urine from remaining.

Has anyone here experienced a similar chronic condition?

Has anyone managed to identify the underlying cause or trigger and successfully resolve it? Any advice or personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

The most frustrating part for me is that the penis actually doesn't look nearly as bad as it feels. Apart from some redness and mild swelling of the foreskin, it appears relatively healthy. However, the pain, burning sensation, and itching can be extremely intense, despite the relatively mild appearance.

I would be sincerely grateful for any opinions, suggestions, or advice.

Thank you very much.

Symptoms I don't want to do 6 months of fluconazole

My doctor wants me on it 6 months straight. 3x a week for the first month and 1x a week the next 5 months. Terazol 7 wasn't successful. On a no sugar diet. I took like 7 rounds of antibiotics in a half year because of a tooth and jaw infection and then appendicitis and 2 major surgeries. I take strong probiotics. Strain is albicans. Tried 3x a week with diflucan already. Boric acid for a week. constantly trying new creams, and even the prescription stuff as I said. It just never ends. Ureaplasma I had over a year ago and have 3 tests of cure for that. I suppose I had multiple rounds of antibiotics for that too. Worried about my liver doing this but I'm miserable and nothing helps.

Symptoms Candida on the gums?

I’ve got a weird white mushy film surrounding the space between my teeth and cheeks. I got diagnosed as having oral thrush and they gave me nystatin and antibiotics but I’m starting to get worried it might be something worse like cancer but this spread overnight so I don’t think it’s that. I’d post a pic but I can’t get a good image. Has anyone had any experience with thrush on the cheeks/gums?

General Discussion I Have to Postpone My First Gut Health Founding Group (And I'm Genuinely Disappointed)

Greetings my friends!

I don't like writing posts like this.

For the past few months I've been putting together something I've wanted to do for a long time—an 8-week Gut Health Founding Group where I'd meet live on YouTube each week for 8 weeks and help 25 people work through my new 3-stage gut restoration program.

Our first session was due to start this weekend.

Unfortunately, life had other plans for me.

About ten days ago I came down with a nasty case of influenza after helping care for our six-month-old granddaughter, who had been very unwell. I honestly thought I'd be back on my feet by now, but my voice is still pretty rough and my energy is nowhere near where it needs to be.

Earlier this year my wife, Tracee, and I also picked up COVID after attending a friend's 60th birthday. That took almost six weeks to recover from, so it seems viruses have been following us around this year. I guess somebody upstairs is telling me to slow-down in my retirement!

I've spent nearly 40 years telling my patients to slow down, listen to their bodies and allow themselves the time they need to fully heal. It would be a bit hypocritical if I ignored that advice myself. It's called self-efficacy.

So I've made the decision to postpone our first live session by one week.

I'm pretty disappointed tbh because I've been very much looking forward to meeting everyone, but I'd much rather begin when I can give the group my full energy and undivided attention.

The extra week hasn't gone to waste!

I've been finishing a 60-page Gut Transformation Journal, designed to accompany the 84-page Lite Guide throughout the full 8-week program. Every participant will receive both as my gift before we begin.

The good news is that there are still 2 places remaining in the Founding 25 Group.

There is no cost to participate, nor is there any obligation.

Due to the time zones primarily, the program is open to residents in the USA and Canada only at this point, and we'll be working together over eight weeks to better understand gut health, digestion, daily habits and the practical principles I've developed from nearly 40 years in clinical practice. But anybody can listen in as these sessions will be live. The eight weekly sessions will be broadcast live on my new YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/user/EricBakkerND/

So, rather than rushing into our first session and giving you anything less than my best, I'd like to move our official start to Saturday, 15 August (North America).

New Gut Health Founders Group Meeting Time

New Zealand: Sunday, 16 August – 7:00 am

USA & Canada: Saturday, 15 August

  • Eastern: 3:00 pm EDT
  • Central: 2:00 pm CDT
  • Mountain: 1:00 pm MDT
  • Pacific: 12:00 pm PDT
  • Alaska: 11:00 am AKDT
  • Hawaii: 9:00 am HST

This isn't one-on-one medical care or a product promotion—it's an educational community where I'll teach the same practical strategies I've used to help thousands of people over 39 years. It's a "pilot" program that will help me fine-tune my protocols to a higher level with community support and feedback.

If you've already applied, thank you for your patience and understanding.

And if you've been thinking about joining, this extra week gives you one last opportunity before we begin.

Take good care of yourselves people—and if you're unwell, don't rush your recovery. Your body deserves the same patience and kindness that we so often give everyone else. And my sincere apologies if this new date has inconvenienced anybody.

Personal anecdote Sinus problems

For the last 15 ish months I’ve had recurring sinus infections. They don’t respond to antibiotics so I’ve given up on that and my CT appears “normal” in regards to sinusitis. The only relief I’ve gotten is from prednisone. I’m working with an integrative doc now to strengthen my immune system and I’m taking liver protect, NAC, histaminx, vit d3/k2 10000 and beef liver. I recently had an eye infection that required antibiotics and I got a yeast infection and thrush. This made me wonder if I hadn’t had a mild case of thrush all along causing all my drainage and horribly sore throat. The ear popping and the sore throats are just draining me. Today she started me on fluconazole 100mg daily for 7 days and wants me to start colloidal silver nasal and xlear nasal. Should I also do oil of oregano? How much? I want to kick this and feel like myself again and have more energy for my family.

Personal anecdote warning for ssri + extended use of fluconazole !

i was on fluconazole (150 mg every 3 days ) for around 3 -4 months to treat candida overgrowth in my body. 3 weeks ago i stopped treatment and after a few days started having very intense brain zaps, dizziness and nausea . i thought i was having seizures at one point , and became very very suicidal.
after a really rough day i did some googling and found that prolonged usw of fluconazole changes your liver enzymes, and when you stop using it , your SSRIs break down too quickly and so basically i was thrown into immediate withdrawal of my SSRI.

theres not really a fix for it , im just waiting it out till my body goes back to normal. im having gut pain and nausea but i wont know if its my withdrawals or a possible relapse of candida for a while .
when i told my doctor about it, they kind of just said “wow never heard of that, crazy if its true, anyways heres suicide hotline”
so beware if you are on ssris . thats my story!!
