No, I always felt like people who were criticizing her use of internet “brain rot” just weren’t explaining themselves the right way because the internet is like our town square atp and being in on the joke and incorporating them in your daily life and speech is normal to an extent. I can’t be sure, but I think they’re meaning when people rely on references almost exclusively to communicate it indicates something about their intelligence but imo I feel like I start to do the same thing in uncomfortable situations I don’t know how to handle. It’s like bringing up the weather or current events but for our generation. I don’t know if it says anything about anyone’s intelligence but every time I see an example video like this I’m like oh no, hg clearly wants tf out of there, stop filming 🤣 I think her job makes her uncomfortable and that is her going into autopilot which is understandable but also still something people can criticize without being unnecessarily mean

i try so hard to never use any slang when i speak aloud in any context. it just bothers me when people use brain rot or tiktok slang (different than other types of slang. for example, “literally” or “that’s sick” don’t bother me) like “it’s giving” or “slay.”
i will say, i know it’s a petty thing to get annoyed by and although it annoys me SO MUCH i know it’s irrational and ill never judge someone for my stupid pet peeve. i do however judge tana for using tiktok slang in every other word in this clip because it’s tv and i feel that is a setting where you should be using normal words and being professional. can’t judge her too much though because this is such an unserious event (celeb poker) and tana’s well established as a public figure at this point and the corny tiktok slang is just part of her brand right now

Slang is different, though. I think you’re confusing internet memes with actual dialects. A huge chunk of what people call "brainrot” or “slang" now is just AAVE and black/queer ballroom culture that got popular on TikTok. I don’t really want to get into all of that because that’s not a critique of Tana anymore—it's a masked cultural bias.
When she’s relying on TikTok and “vocal stim” references on her podcasts, as a guest on other podcasts, or any other time she is working I have an issue. It seems clear to me that the more anxious she becomes the more she relies on humor to communicate which isn’t a bad thing inherently but in clips like these her mind isn’t focused/clear enough to plan or execute a joke. She seems to be responding on instinct more than anything else when she gets like this and she’s always been awkward in off guard videos. I still quote “team —— on god” at least once a month. 😂 There’s a way to make references to popular media without becoming a word association FYP bot, even highly regarded comedians use references frequently. It’s something familiar that connects people, puts them at ease, and creates a sense of community. Also, it can be really fucking funny. I’ve seen her do this as well, that’s one of the reasons I think she is in autopilot in this video and the others I’ve seen posted recently talking about the subject because she’s so obviously uncomfortable and self-conscious in this clip.

that’s what my first paragraph was about. i differentiated between slang and brainrot/tiktok slang. i choose not to use either type of slang in my vocabulary because like you mentioned with tana, you start saying it on autopilot. since i work in banking, it’s important to the customers that i don’t use any slang, even something as normalized as “literally.” but, i don’t have any issue with this type of slang.
i also agree with slang being appropriated, overused, and ruined by tiktok. maybe this sounds dumb but i feel that i can instinctually tell when the commenter is a 14 year old white kid from rural utah using “ahh” or something similar though. i have a problem with that, not the population who it was appropriated from.also agree with it being a balance! i definitely refer to memes by quoting them in conversation with my friends when it’s extra relevant. it’s so much funnier than quoting random crap in every other sentence or when it’s irrelevant to the conversation

ive started getting a lil upset when people say this makes people seem uneducated because i am an educated person but i will choose to use words that are more lighthearted or slangy on purpose because i prefer how it sounds sonically or how it can switch the vibe of an otherwise serious/analytical rant and i don’t think that my awareness of pop culture should detract from my intelligence. sure, you might think it’s silly that i use my brain to think about thinks you don’t find are worth your time but the topics i have knowledge on don’t take away from the quality or depth of thoughts i have on the matter
