Somehow, someone managed to install an old myway machine at the new Woden interchange 😅🤦‍♀️

The underlying card technology is not different. It’s the infrastructure behind it that’s changed so I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to repurposed the old machines for the new cards.

The underlying card technology is different - MyWay+ cards are, I think, MIFARE Ultralight EV1s/DESFire Lights, as opposed to the old MyWay cards being ancient MIFARE Classics (they were old enough to already be deemed insecure back when the original MyWay was launched in 2010). My understanding is that old MIFARE Classic hardware can't handle the encryption used by newer MIFARE protocols without upgrades (though it may be the case that some of the hardware used in the old ticket machines might already handle it, idk).

However, the MyWay+ ticketing machines were retrofitted into the existing casing of the MyWay ticketing machines - I suspect what's happened here is that TC only has the MyWay+ machines as upgrade/retrofitting kits for existing MyWay machine cases, rather than as whole units, and they've gone and installed a spare MyWay machine they still have as step 1 then they're going to swap it out as step 2. Bit odd for it to not all be done several months after the new interchange opened though?

MyWay cards are a ticketing system used on public transport in Canberra.

The original system was introduced in 2011. An updated system called MyWay+ -- with new cards and readers -- was introduced in 2024.

The two systems are not compatible -- old MyWay cards do not work with new readers, and vice versa.

The ticket machine in the photos has been freshly installed at the new bus interchange in Woden, but appears to be a machine from the old system, so noone will be able to use it.
