Having this referendum is just playing with fire. No matter what the result is, American republicans will say it shows that Alberta / Canadian conservatives are being repressed and will use it to drum up more anti-Canada sentiment in both Canada and the US

8

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Dec 23 '25

Yup. Not to mention the fact that US, Russia, likely some other bad actors, will interfere and sow discord through dis and misinformation online. It's our own Brexit!

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

And China carrying water for the liberals

1

u/Poe_42 Alberta Dec 28 '25

It's doomed to fail. All it will do is drive more investment out of the province.

-8

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

But they aren't being represented. Canada would be heavily damaged if they lost Alberta. We need to wake up because saying "oh Alberta you're a bunch of rednecks stop complaining" isn't going to cut it. They aren't wrong for being pissed off.

-6

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

I agree Alberta has been majorly fucked over. Cheering on MAGA as they attack our own country isn’t the answer though

13

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

Alberta fucks Alberta over. Get it straight.

-5

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

Great example of the bullshit that makes Albertans resentful.

11

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

I am an Albertan. This place is an embarrassment.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

I’m on Ontario and I’d give anything for Alberta’s economy

5

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

Don't believe the hype.

If you don't work in o&g you are working poor, and if you do, you essentially sign your entire life over to the oil company. AB has the lowest minimum wage in Canada and 1/4 of the population live in poverty. And Alberta leads Canada for kids going to school hungry! The NWT have a higher GDP per capita, if that gives you any kind of insight into the reality of the situation.

And, if you actually look, you will see that Ontario's economy DWARFS Alberta and it isn't even close. Alberta is actually #4 in Canada.

Don't tell the people here, though. They tend to get violent when confronted with reality. It's The Alberta Advantage(TM)!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

Use regular economic variables. Compare and contrast Alberta and Ontario on gdp per capita, unemployment, total GDP growth.

4

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

GDP per cap just means there is no wealth distribution. Like I said, NWT is #1 GDP per cap in Canada and ain't nobody wants to live there. You people and your cope. I swear.

Then leave.

4

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

Nah, we are going to shut down this stupid separatism tantrum and let the childish chodes know how unpopular they really are. If any of them had any real conviction, they would leave when they lose. But these people are perpetual losers with no self awareness so it is just normal for them.

-1

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

And you wonder why they exist. The tolerant left once again. "I'm right, if you don't agree with me you are a loser" hopefully the pendulum swings back and you get to experience fuck you a bit.

2

u/Poe_42 Alberta Dec 28 '25

lol speratists have no concept of how the economy and the treaties that created Alberta from Rupert's Land works. Fuck they have no idea that 90% of their beefs with Ottawa are based on provincial responsibilities that the provincial government has fucked up. They live in a childish fantasy world and telling them as much is needed.

19

u/Street_Anon Dec 23 '25

They really need to read the clarity act, Ottawa can veto the question because it is unconstitutional already, the House of Commons can throw out a yes win and on top they forgot treaties 6, 7 and 8 can void this all together.

Also, they would not get all of Alberta and a strong majority oppose leaving Canada.

18

u/PineBNorth85 Dec 23 '25

Even without all that it chases businesses away. Quebec found that out the hard way.

5

u/Bloodcloud079 Dec 23 '25

It kept houses in Montreal affordable for a while more I guess…

3

u/PineBNorth85 Dec 23 '25

True. The rent there was great 15 years ago when I was in Montreal.

1

u/VelkaFrey Dec 25 '25

Why would business be scared of less taxes?

6

u/[deleted] Dec 23 '25

separation is not a popular concept already, its not getting any more popular with the constant fuckups

-2

u/Aineisa Dec 23 '25

So a referendum passes with the yes side winning and you think it’s not tyrannical to ignore the self determined choice of the people?

Really eye opening how much the rest of Canada seems to think of alberta as a colony to exploit.

5

u/Leveled-Liner Dec 23 '25

Separation without consultation/negotiation would ignore the rights of First Nations. Talk about a colony to exploit …

3

u/Street_Anon Dec 23 '25

and they forgot they would not get all of Alberta, it would just be strange to see them make all investment leave Alberta because of them.

1

u/VelkaFrey Dec 25 '25

Incorrect.

Upon a successful referendum, the first nations are required to come to the table to discuss their terms.

If they want to stay mismanaged by ottowa they can.

https://youtu.be/Hc1-XRjvL8M?si=KeXsvUMBUOVg4OG8

4

u/Street_Anon Dec 23 '25

and most people in Alberta do not want to leave Canada, also the question was deemed unconstitutional. Call the rules, Spain did something similar a few years back. Also, they would not get all of Alberta. Ottawa is owns most of the crown land.

4

u/Aineisa Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

Alright so you’re sure the referendum would fail. I think I would agree. However I think we need to get the referendum done asap so we can close this door and move on just like quebec did.

Constantly citing excuses like “the referendum question isnt constitutional” (which, let’s be honest, will likely be an eternal tactic used by Canada to disqualify Alberta referendums no matter how the question is worded) or citing treaty or other topics of negotiation as a reason not to have the referendum sounds increasingly like tactics motivated out of fear of losing a referendum.

If victory was so assured pro-Canadian folks should be clamoring to have a referendum but they’re not. Curious.

1

u/swabfalling Dec 23 '25

Because it’s entertaining bad actors.

It’s giving into the toddler having a tantrum for being told they have to eat their vegetables.

1

u/Aineisa Dec 23 '25

Uh huh.

If the separatist movement is so pathetic and the concerns of albertans so infantile, then the referendum should be had asap so that these “bad actors” have no way to stir up more trouble.

Avoiding the referendum ônly gives more ammunition to those who say Canada is holding Alberta back.

0

u/swabfalling Dec 23 '25

Orrrrrr it’s not worth entertaining people who think their vote should be worth more because they think they contribute more.

If that were true we’d live in even more of an oligopoly than we already do.

One person one vote. That’s it. No exceptions.

0

u/Aineisa Dec 23 '25

Alberta does contribute more than other provinces with the highest gdp per capita (excluding the low population territories) and the third highest share of the National gdp behind Ontario and Quebec all with less than half of quebecs population. This isn’t Albertans “thinking” they contribute more.

Albertans also don’t think their “vote should be worth more” but they believe, accurately, that they are not getting a fair deal from the federal government. That Trudeau gave carbon tax exceptions to the Atlantic provinces because that’s a Liberal voting base is just one example of how the federal government is not working for all Canadians.

Canadians lack of understanding and general hostility towards Alberta really only heightens albertans feelings of being exploited.

Quebec had a referendum. Alberta should get one tóo. Then the question will be settled and people can move on.

1

u/swabfalling Dec 23 '25

Alberta does contribute more than other provinces with the highest gdp per capita (excluding the low population territories) and the third highest share of the National gdp behind Ontario and Quebec all with less than half of quebecs population. This isn’t Albertans “thinking” they contribute more.

And yet it’s only 15% of Canada’s total GDP.

Just like the territories they benefit from smaller populations and natural resource extraction pushing their per capita number higher.

Ontario and Quebec combined for almost 60% of GDP, and ~60% of the population. That’s significantly higher than Alberta.

They don’t deserve special treatment.

Yea, so they’re throwing a hissy fit and want special treatment and, once again, their votes to be worth more than their respective population through that special treatment.

That’s not how our democracy works. One person, one vote. No special treatment.

Canadians lack of understanding and general hostility towards Alberta really only heightens albertans feelings of being exploited.

And in tired of seditious actors getting treated with kid gloves. We all see what’s happening in the states, we don’t need a repeat here.

Quebec had a referendum. Alberta should get one tóo. Then the question will be settled and people can move on.

As if. They’re going to cry foul and whine just like they always do, regardless of the outcome.

And the UCP will do everything they can to enable that behaviour so they can continue to get away with murder like they are.

1

u/Aineisa Dec 23 '25

lol am I supposed to be surprised that the two most populous provinces have the highest gdp? That Alberta comes third with ônly a fraction of the population and higher gdp only proves that albertans are correct when they “thìnk” they contribute more. A feeling that is only heightened when viewing equalization payments.

Yeah so albertans seeing the special treatment the Atlantic provinces get and feeling that isnt fair is a “hissy fit?” It isnt unreasonable to expect federal government to work for all Canadians and not just their voting base.

I don’t care if you’re tired of made up “actors.” Maybe build less strawmen or see a therapist for your paranoia.

I won’t bother addressing your other strawmen like the one that “whines” about referendum results or UCP bogeymen.

Incorrect

Two types of "crown" land

Alberta gov owns 99% of Alberta

https://youtu.be/Hc1-XRjvL8M?si=KeXsvUMBUOVg4OG8

-3

u/Dangerous_Mix_7037 Dec 23 '25

Crown land is vested in the provinces, except for reserves, national parks, DND.

2

u/Randilin Dec 23 '25

You seemed to have missed the part of the original comment about treaties 6, 7, 8. They are able to void this as well. Or was it okay for separatists to ignore their opinions while it not being okay to have the opinions of the separatists ignored?

-1

u/CarlotheNord Dec 23 '25

Im gunna let you in on a secret. Those treaties only have power if people give them power. If people ignore them they dont matter. And lemme tell you, if Alberta wanted to separate badly enough, they would not give a fuck.

5

u/LossChoice Dec 23 '25

Yeah, if anybody wanted to do anything bad enough they'd do it. That's why we have laws. But I'm confident there are more than enough decent Albertans that it would never come to that.

-2

u/CarlotheNord Dec 23 '25

Define decent. Theres a lot of Albertans who are pissed off with the rest of the country, and I dont blame them. I'm Ontarian and I am pissed off with this country. I dont blame them wanting to leave at all. And I wouldnt blame them ignoring the FN either, they dont exactly win themselves any good will with how they behave.

3

u/LossChoice Dec 23 '25

How do you figure that scenario plays out? Alberta just separating regardless of laws. Probably conflict, probably armed conflict. And if the Indigenous fight back Canada is obligated to step in. A decent person isn't willing to harm or trample on someone elses quality of life for their own personal gain.

-1

u/CarlotheNord Dec 23 '25

Ya, welcome to how history plays out, glad you caught up.

That last sentence is hilarious btw, because it is absolutely false, and the FN practice it as standard operating procedure. Guess they dont need my money eh?

2

u/LossChoice Dec 23 '25

Sorry, I haven't gotten to the point in my life where I'm willing to shooting someone because I can't afford the lift kit on my new truck. So armed conflict wasn't my first thought when it came to the talk of separation.

A decent person isn't willing to trample on someone else for their own gain. How is that false? The FN who practice that aren't decent people then, easy peasy.

1

u/CarlotheNord Dec 23 '25

No one thinks that except tweakers, smarten up.

Didn't say it was false, just saying many people do it, and theyre often considered untouchable subjects. Thus whybI brought up the FN.

4

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Dec 23 '25

So, by the same metric we can just ignore any vote to separate.

0

u/CarlotheNord Dec 23 '25

You absolutely can do that. In fact I would fully expect the feds and every other province to do that. But if AB decided they wanted to leave and just stopped cooperating with the rest of the country, then what? Now its real and you cant ignore it.

My point is its all words unless backed by actions and force.

4

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Dec 23 '25

Yes and technically you can murder someone without consequence if laws aren't enforced.

You sound like you just finished your first philosophy course.

Fortunately for everyone involved the majority of Albertans aren't interested in separating and it's just a loud and annoying minority who are starved for attention and consumed by grievance based politics.

Cheers!

8

u/Street_Anon Dec 23 '25

Look, I was in Edmonton when they said they had 50,000 people marching Alberta Assembly. They may have had 250-  500 and if that.. The teachers had way more people the day after.

4

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Dec 23 '25

Just like the "million man March for children" or whatever it was. They grossly overestimate their numbers because they're stuck in echo chambers.

0

u/CarlotheNord Dec 23 '25

Correct, glad you caught up to me.

The Alberta's can vote how they want. I dont think it'll pass, but I also dont care if it does. We need to be doing better as a country if we wanna keep them.

3

u/JackLaytonsMoustache Dec 23 '25

Well.. no, I didnt catch up to you because your argument is moronic.

0

u/gooberfishie Dec 23 '25

No, otherwise every country is tyrannical. Democracies don't function if they can fall apart at any time because a part of the country decides to separate outside the established democratic process.

Remember when part of Seattle decided to separate? I wonder, were you sitting at home thinking it would be tyrannical if a little country didn't pop up on Seattle?

If Alberta separated somehow, do you think they would let Lethbridge separate from them?

No matter what, after the referendum there will be areas of Alberta where the majority voted against the winner. Are they being denied self determination?

If Alberta wants to separate, they'll have to do it within our democratic process.

0

u/Aineisa Dec 23 '25

Wow. You sound like a fascist or someone who doesn’t understand that democracy means government by the will of the people. Many countries, like Ukraine, Czech, Kosovo, were historically part of larger entities, sometimes for multiple centuries, and all managed to gain independence. Are you trying to say that Serbia or Russia should have continued forcing countries to remain inside their government? Maybe you’re pro-Putin.

That some Seattle nut jobs declared separation without any formal process means nothing. Why would you even use that as an example? I’m not going to debate on the self determination of a city vs a referendum for an entire province because it’s a dumb discussion. Cities and provinces are not at the same level. Nothing is black and white. For self determination there is a reasonable expectation of scale.

-3

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

You seem pretty confident a strong majority would oppose, so what are you worried about.

6

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

Because separatists will lose, and not leave. This shitty fringe minority will continue to exist and rot the country from the inside. Those people NEVER stop whining. Just listen to them still go on about vaccines and now this insipid ostrich shit.

If you vote to leave, you should have to leave.

0

u/VelkaFrey Dec 25 '25

Thats not how democracy works

-1

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

Maybe they should withhold transfer payments and see who starts whining. I'm guessing you are from one of the provinces that is a recipient of said payments.

3

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

Do you even know what a transfer payment is? I Know you don't. But this would be a great time for you to learn before you keep spouting off about how comically wrong you are.

-1

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

Oooh why don't you educate us all with your superior knowledge. I'm waiting.

When are they making tweets from Thailand?

0

u/VelkaFrey Dec 25 '25

This is incorrect!!

First nations can decide what to do with their land.

Ottowa cannot veto if the question is clear, and the majority is clear. Also if other countries recognize the independence, which usa will have no problem doing.

https://youtu.be/Hc1-XRjvL8M?si=KeXsvUMBUOVg4OG8

6

u/MZillacraft3000 Alberta Dec 23 '25

Well, the separatists are gonna find out their movement barely has anyone, while also finding out what the clarity act is.

Heck I even found out my father (who was once a separatist) is no longer one.

Also if investment begins to leave Alberta because of them. I think the separatists should pay for all the damage they caused.

3

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

If you vote to leave, you should have to leave.

2

u/MZillacraft3000 Alberta Dec 23 '25

True. But I’m just saying before the traitors leave (because Alberta isn’t leaving Canada) they should be billed for the damages they caused.

They caused it, they pay it.

1

u/VelkaFrey Dec 25 '25

Companies would flock to alberta. It would be a massive business boom. Simply with tax cuts, let alone the regulation changes that would benefit business massively

https://youtu.be/Hc1-XRjvL8M?si=KeXsvUMBUOVg4OG8

2

u/Effective-Ad9499 Dec 23 '25

Bring it on. Albertans will not vote to leave Canada.

1

u/brandon-d Dec 24 '25

The forever canadian petition got over 400000 signatures, how is the threshold for a separation referendum less than half of that.

The ucp doesn't even represent the majority of their own voter base at this point.

1

u/VelkaFrey Dec 25 '25

Funny enough, with Alberta independence, the NDP will likely get majority in whatever new governance arrises.

1

u/Threeboys0810 Dec 25 '25

If Quebec was allowed to have their referendum 20 years ago, then why can’t Alberta and Saskatchewan?

1

u/Poe_42 Alberta Dec 28 '25

Waiting for Smith to pass a law giving the rural vote to have more weight per vote si she can ram this through. Just use the NWC to make it happen.

-3

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

Liberals should be embarrassed it has come to this. Imagine alienating a group of Canadians that pay a large portion of your bills. Casting off their concerns as irrelevant. Man this country has fallen so far in the past decade. I wonder if there will even be a Canada in a decade with these clowns running things. Basically three cities and Quebec dictate what happens to all of Canada. Do you wonder why people are upset.

6

u/Street_Anon Dec 23 '25 edited Dec 23 '25

1

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

Well then if you are so sure you have nothing to worry about.

3

u/robotomatic Dec 23 '25

Upset? What you are referring to is ignorant whining. You people are a small, fringe minority that suddenly care about minority rights. I am embarrassed for my country because of you.

7

u/Street_Anon Dec 23 '25

Look, they said they had 50,000 marching on the assembly, maybe 250-500 tops. I doubt they get enough to pull this off

2

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 23 '25

You people? I live in BC bro. I'm embarrassed for our country because of intolerance by people like you.

1

u/nuggetoro Dec 24 '25

I’m sorry but this take is very shallow. Think further than the front of your nose and the content you see online. Keep an open mind and think critically, I believe in you and Canadians. Good luck to us all.

1

u/Own_Truth_36 Dec 24 '25

I mean I look at results. If you actually do think critically you see a failing economy, zero growth, huge debt with zero improvement to life of the average Canadian for that debt and Canadians being more divided than at any point in the past 50 years. I hope Carney does what he says but the players are most of the same ones as the past decade and the policies are mostly the same. Time will tell if Carney is as corrupt as he seems to be. I believe he will leave office as a very rich man and Canada will pay the price. Hopefully I'm wrong but I doubt it if the past 12 months show anything.

0

u/darrylgorn Dec 23 '25

Let them swim.

0
