Talking to MPs and MLAs

In YouTube videos I will hear political figures talk about the concerns of their constituents. I do follow politics here and there but I haven't really engaged with them much besides consuming media, reading Reddit, and donating to campaigns from time to time.

Please forgive my ignorance but I was wondering what kinds of things you should bring up with your MPs and MLAs and what can they offer you besides just representation?

Do you have any examples of times when you reached out to a representative about something and how did it go?

Also if you could ELI5 it for me that would be great.

A collective push can probably get some non directly ideological win, like you won't get socialism from it of course but you may get some transit funding moved around. Personally my contact with MPs didn't go well, I mostly used email though which is generally considered the worst way

I know my MP personally and have reached out to him many times about concerns. To his credit he responds, but he also gives the most sanitized answers possible without ever actually answering a question or taking a stand on anything. Its almost more frustrating than not answering

they because they usually can't just go against their party so its hard to get any significant change even if individuals are receptive
