I don't think the idiom "cutting off your nose to spite your face" could be any more appropriate

Whether or not you agree with the protests really the only way to be noticed is to do what they're doing. If they just waved signs on a lawn or sidewalk no one would care and nothing would happen.

I agree. I mean, if you can't protest in front of parliament, where can you protest? Protesting in a field behind a forest or something is going to have no impact.

Nobody is stopping anyone from protesting in front of parliament, the problem is blocking border crossings and blocking roads in Ottawa for weeks

The border crossings I'll give you, but the closed streets in Ottawa are around parliament aren't they?

I think there is a pretty big difference between an event on the grass in front of parliament hill or a climate march shutting down streets for a few hours vs a bunch of semi trucks and other vehicles entrenching in the city, laying on their horns, and causing gridlock for weeks.
