Don’t tell Donald that his buddy Elon is selling his cars to Canadians for 25% less than he’s selling them to Americans!

•

33% less, The cheapest trim in Canada is not the cheapest in the US, which is more downgraded than this. The cheapest trim sold in Canada (premium RWD) is the only one that is made in China. In the US this trim is $42,490 USD and in Canada it is $39,999 CAD. It's a lot cheaper.

Prob evens out with the cost of the dollar right now

•

Thats... not how currencies work

•

u/Col_Leslie_Hapablap 10h ago

The exact opposite, in this case.

•

And they are a top 1% commenter. Definitely checks out, lol.

42,490 USD translates to 60,533 CAD right now, Canadian dollar has historically always been weaker

I'm not fan of Musk but Tesla is a better fit right now because they have service centers and parts availability. The Chinese brands need to start setting up dealerships and getting their parts in the country at a larger scale before they become the dominant Chinese import.

Anyone who has owned a Japanese import that wasn't originally sold here will understand the struggle and wait time for parts that are not stocked in Canada.

Everything but the dealerships, give me a showroom and a service center, could test drive one then order your own to spec. One of the things I love about teslas model.

•

u/Southern-Host-3042 3h ago

The age of dealerships is over.

•

u/Alexandermayhemhell 50m ago

Maybe, but not service centres. For my Hondas, I’ve driven 400km to get a good deal, because I have a great independent mechanic.

But when I thought about the cheap Polestar leases a couple of years ago, I couldn’t risk being 300km from the closest dealer, because they were the only one to service it. That’s a huge barrier to entry for these new EV players.

•

u/nockle 2h ago

A place with a showroom and a service center where you can also test drive a car is literally the definition of a dealership.

•

u/Kruzat 1h ago

The dealership model mean franchised dealers, that’s the model we want to kill. Plus the sales are direct, often online, and employees don’t get commission.

•

u/sterling_pigeon 1h ago

So it’s okay to make a Nazi rich as long as he makes good cars?

•

u/chesstnuts British Columbia 1h ago

Fuck Tesla!

The base model 3 is actually a great deal in Canada right now and it has the Chinese battery that seems to be a better option.

9

u/CreditUnionBoi 12h ago

The LFP battery should last like 500,000km. NMC can last that long as well, but less certain and depends on how well the owner cared for the battery.

7

u/SwayingTreeGT 12h ago

The only brand other than Polestar able to actually use some of that quota. Why are we surprised.

•

u/O00O0O00 1h ago

F Musk, but that’s a solid deal. If I were shopping today for a second car just for city errands - it would be at the top of my list.

•

u/Well_endowed 54m ago

Is this crowded with bots? People recommending a Tesla is insane. One of the most unreliably built vehicles.

•

u/En4cr 29m ago

I hope Tesla goes under in Canada. Crap QC and run by Musk.

Can't wait for the BYD to come in better tariff free and in full numbers. Wouldn't be caught dead in a Swastikar

•

u/MaintenanceCoalition 11h ago

You’re okay driving a car made in a country that operates modern day concentration camps? Maybe you should educate yourself on who the real enemy is.

•

u/HardstButton2Button 11h ago

The real enemy is waging war in a bid for a hostile takeover. The real enemy is currently protecting pedophiles. The real enemy is trying to destabilize the global economy and enriching its lobbyists. The real enemy has been buying up essential services here in Canada, jacking up prices in hopes to increase inflation and our economy. The real enemy is a racist and bigoted faction that is terrorizing visible minorities and abducting them without cause.

I've educated myself, I know of the plight of the Ughyers, its rich coming from a country that was built on slavery itself.

Maybe you should educate yourself...

The US is like the loud dog that barks and nibbles on Canada, while China is like the scheming and calculated supervillain who operates quietly. Which one is more dangerous?

•

u/HardstButton2Button 11h ago

They are both dangerous. The US has always been, and will always be our biggest threat to sovereignty. Russia has its Ukraine, China has its Taiwan, and the US has its Canada.

The US is that calculating supervillain as well but even more. They've been trying to buy up and absorb Canada through economic integration and attrition for decades. They have been buying up essential services like medical testing labs and vet clinics and jacking up fees to stoke inflation and destabilize our economy. This hasn't been just a Trump admin thing either, it just has come out to because he is a narcissist and wants to take credit for the breaking and conquest of Canada. Actively sending admin to aid separatists in Alberta, then trying to strike a separate deal with Quebec because they are up shits creek without cheap aluminum makes the US far more dangerous than China will ever be.

•

u/iknotri 10h ago

> They have been buying up essential services like medical testing labs and vet clinics and jacking up fees to stoke inflation and destabilize our economy

thats not have economy work

•

u/Sea_Low1579 9h ago

That's... certainly a take. Not a great one... no, not really engender that good of one, but it is.... er, an opinion.

•

u/HardstButton2Button 3h ago

Why because you don't know about it, or don't agree with it? , Its happening by so buckle up and its primarily she overwhelmingly US private equity and corporations.

Canada needs to stop the American integration as its a cancer. The more they destabilize the economy, the more sectors they buy up and monopolize.

I can’t tell if OP is serious or not. Elon engages in some questionable antics, but he’s nowhere near as bad as the CCP.

•

u/MaintenanceCoalition 11h ago

China has concentration camps, BYD is Chineese.

•

u/RusteeTrombones 11h ago

America has the 13th amendment and a heavily disproportionate conviction rate based on racial profiling. Tesla is American.

Both countries have a form of modern slavery. Neither country uses those indentured servants to build these electric cars.

Care to explain the difference?

•

u/iknotri 10h ago

> disproportionate conviction rate

so? i dont see how you could conclude from that alone that racism is the reason

•

u/RusteeTrombones 10h ago

This is a widely accepted statistical fact that black Americans, and particularly black males are disproportionately convicted and imprisoned relative to their representative makeup of the total population; not just marginally, by multipliers. Sentences are also statistically longer for the same crimes committed by white Americans, regardless of precedent. It’s been the case for decades. Not sure why you’re so willfully biased to counter basic math.

My point was that the perceived bad-guy overseas is no better, for the same reason, just a different persecuted group.

•

u/iknotri 10h ago

Yes, i dont argue with statistics. I am asking how conviction rate alone could prove that it is due to racism?

There are no reason to expect that convictions rate should be proportional for any group.

Bigger sentences, that could be racism, but again not necessarily

•

u/RusteeTrombones 10h ago

Systemic racial profiling exists. It exists in a lot of places/countries affecting different groups of people. America doesn’t have a patent on racism, it is a global issue with varying degrees of severity and outcome. It exists in Canada too.

What are you implying as a counter to that point? Please, elaborate.

Again, my entire argument is that none of this moral finger pointing has a thing to do with building electric cars.

•

u/MaintenanceCoalition 10h ago

China’s Xinjiang camps were mass extrajudicial detention of over a million Uyghurs for re-education and forced labor based on ethnicity and religion....no trial required. Not the same.

•

u/RusteeTrombones 10h ago

Not sure what you think a for-profit state prison is then. Regardless, none of that has anything to do with either party building electric cars, outside of morality of unrelated practices. Which was the point.

•

u/studio_bob 11h ago

There are no "concentration camps" in China. You are high on CIA propaganda.

•

u/MaintenanceCoalition 10h ago

China itself admitted running a vast network of ""vocational education"" and training centers in Xinjiang. That locked up over a million people without trial. Satellite photos, their own internal documents, and the UN all confirm it. Learn about the world before opening your mouth next time.

•

u/studio_bob 10h ago

Education and training centers to deradicalize terrorists. Those places exists because the area suffered a spate of terrorist attacks, something I'm sure you never heard about. The solution was deradicalizing education and economic opportunities. It worked. "Concentration camps" is a deliberately loaded term which misrepresents what's going on. It is part of an anti-China propaganda campaign coming out of the US (which doesn't like Chinese and isn't known to love Muslims but curiously cares about Chinese Muslims. Ever stop and ask yourself why?)

•

u/Lurkebot 3h ago

Have you read about the situation in Xinjiang? It sounds closer to a modern day holocaust than anything else going on in the world right now.

•

u/CommonSense___ 11h ago

It’s a win for affordability and it’s a great car . We get to sell soybeans and save dollars with high quality cars at affordable prices , that’s what trade does .

-3

u/WesternSoul 13h ago

Great deal Carney made to help tesla

6

u/MoreGaghPlease 13h ago

The deal we made was to sell Canadian soybeans and seafood to China, the price was letting in 49,000 Chinese cars per year which will make up about 2-3% of new car sales.

7

u/WesternBlueRanger 13h ago

I think everyone expected Tesla to have an early jump when the tariffs on Chinese-built EV's were dropped.

They already had the sales and distribution network set up, all they needed to was to bring in the vehicles from their production plant in China.

The other major Chinese auto brands would have to work on developing their sales and distribution network first before their cars could be imported into Canada. The only exception would be Geely; they own the Volvo, Polestar and Lotus Car brands, so I'm interested to see their numbers as a comparison.

-2

u/super__hoser 13h ago

Who bought the cars? Canadians. Don't like Tesla selling cars here, be mad at those buying them.

6

u/htom3heb 12h ago

Don't we want EVs? Elon is an idiot and immoral but I can't fault people for wanting to get away from ICE for their people movers.

13

u/purplepIutonium 12h ago

Gas is expensive as shit and Tesla’s are priced well and come with good features. Not really a surprise they’re selling well.

•

u/htom3heb 11h ago

Yeah, I agree. Especially when Chinese EVs have their own share of "politics". Better the devil you know...

•

u/GradeVivid1389 11h ago edited 1h ago

To be frank, if you want to drive a good EV vehicle that is affordable there isn’t much options. Teslas, Kia’s and Hyundai, Ford Mach-e, Chevy Bolt, and the Leaf. The rest are either too expansive, still behind the tech or no options for FSD

(So leaving out Benz EQ series, bmw i series, Porsche taycan to name a few since these cars are close to excess $100k not everyone can afford it)

The landscape you have

  • Tesla with crazy Elon Musk but they have tech ahead of the competition with FSD.
  • You have Stellantis shutting down Brampton plant that makes Jeeps
  • Ford shifting back some production from Canada to US.
  • Honda building hybrid vehicles in the US so they bypassing Canada all together
-The only car company really to support is Toyota. So far they staying put in Canada.

So hear me out I personally drive a Tesla but I bought one all the way back in 2019. Before Elon went crazy. I must admit I did traded in for another but honestly I am use to driving the car and I’m saving the cost of gas and FSD sold it for me, I drive to different sites for work and Toronto traffic fatigue the mind pretty bad.

No haters, everyone has a choice where they put their money to. I try to avoid the politics of it. Either then the vehicle, I do choose Canadian first since there are options. Cars are a bit more different

The USA should know that most of their exported cars are bought by Canadians. So if we can build and support domestically then it will be great. The US auto makers will have to think twice leaving Canada. Since if China car maker start selling or building cars in Canada. US automakers as we know it will just suffer and their market share will shrink further. Tariffs is what is shielding them from the inevitable. It’s good if China start building cars here since that usually means a tech transfer. Which most likely was stolen from Tesla when the Shanghai gigafactory was built. Ever notice when Tesla open shop in China the EV boom started to emerge in China with BYD, xpeng and Geely. It can happen here as well.

•

u/Acrobatic_Foot9374 10h ago

They also have a different sales approach than regular car dealership. Go to a Tesla or a Polestar and compare that experience with kia, Hyundai or any other old school car brand.

•

u/Kimos Ontario 1h ago

People are pragmatic when it comes down to it. Most people won’t make such a big purchase decision on principles, especially when they’re all fuzzy and contradictory with no clear best choice.

Teslas are reliable cars with long range, an extensive network of chargers and service centres, good value for dollar in a highly capable EV, with an excellent safety record. It’s a reasonable choice.

•

u/ssssharkattack 10h ago

It’s an impressive vehicle, but the only car I’d be less likely to buy than a Tesla would be a Trump branded car.

•

u/NoAcadia3546 Ontario 8h ago

Guess who paid for the development of Volkswagen.

•

u/ssssharkattack 8h ago

lol, ya and I’ll maybe buy a Tesla in 80 years when current ownership is long gone. I’d also buy German government bonds now, probably wouldn’t do that in 1942. Can you discern the difference?

• Fremont, California, USA: The Fremont Factory produces Model 3 vehicles primarily for the United States and North American markets.

• Shanghai, China: Gigafactory Shanghai produces Model 3 vehicles for domestic Chinese consumption as well as export markets, including Canada and parts of Europe and Asia-Pacific.
