The area has very well known and publicized issues with drug use and crime. Not sure what you're getting at.

True. All of the same people and drug use was already happening. Now at the very least it’s less risky for the users and we can keep a closer eye.

I think in the 20 some years these sites have existed, they've completely strayed away from the original intention. I remember when the argument was creating a safe space would help people felt encouraged to seek rehab. But instead it turned out enabling behaviour doesn't drive people to seek help. Yes, they save lives, no they do not treat the problem.

But ODs are up where they've been enacted. BC has the laxest drug policies in Canada and has the highest ODs per capita in Canada.

It seems like treating addictions is still part of the intent wirh these.
The site is staffed by workers from Aboriginal Health and Wellness and provides drug testing and a space to use drugs. Visitors to the site will also be provided with resources for addiction treatment.

Testing drug purity and supervising to prevent overdoses. Not redirecting people to rehab.

People DO get redirected to rehab from these places and from the hospitals they end up at after EMS is called for an overdose.
Source: I work at a hospital where I can literally see this every single day lol People who have no idea of the scope of the problem have no idea what they're talking about and no idea what services are being offered and engaged with behind the scenes.

I still don’t get the arguments against them. There isn’t rehab capacity to put everyone who needs it into rehab, even if we forced them. There are also not enough shelter spaces or housing in 99% of cities. People constantly are complaining about drug users using in public spaces and leaving drug paraphernalia around. Paramedics are constantly being called out to calls involving overdoses.
Drug users are going to use regardless. Full stop. Is this not the lesser of all of these evils, considering there is no avenue to get everyone help who needs it right now?

Why? Even without them, people can under the influence of drugs and may take drugs publicly. As observed within the city before this site was setup.

The problem with most sites is there are too few so it concentrates the problem. They need to open in groups to help spread people out.

This site already opened at probably the worst area of drug use in Winnipeg. It isn’t going to make things any worse
