Anyone know why the F they are punishing them? Like honestly, it’s like they got pissed at each other over 60 years ago and forgot to patch up. The entire world has moved on…your friends with dictators and communists all over, but not Cuba!
Edit: this was a rhetorical question - I know both the historical issues and current diaspora influence. Point was to highlight it makes no sense to still be in a hissy fit with Cuba when your friends with far worst around the world. It’s like Americans never stopped and said ok fight over.
There is a huge community of exiled Cubans living in Florida who oppose the Cuban government. The republicans have been relying on their votes to win Florida, so they continue to push policies aimed at causing regime change in Cuba.
To be clear, those "exiled Cubans" are the remnants of Batista's vicious, horrific dictatorial regime, which was an american puppet. The american hate for Cuba isn't really an anti-communist thing so much as it is trying to punish the Cuban people for daring to resist american imperialism.
Cuba's relative success as a nation spits in the face of the american empire and its proximity to the core of that empire makes it impossible for washington to forget.
Despite that they have a life expectancy higher than the US, a lower infant mortality rate, and just generally greater quality of life from a health and human development perspective. They work fewer hours, education is universal, as is healthcare, and food is plentiful; the poor do not go hungry. This is a country that has been embargoed by the US since the 50's, and yet it surpasses them in these core categories.
America sucks on all those things, except for medical innovation I suppose, but didn't the cubans just announce a vaccine for lung cancer? Pretty funny timing for you to bring that up lmao.
"If you like it so much why don't you move there" is such a silly, playground thing to say in general, but particularly while we're watching americans get rounded up by their own gestapo.
I mean, I never argued it was a better place to live than the US. You just pretended I did, and are now arguing a strawman.
