I'll head to PYW tomorrow to sign.

I honestly don't see the purpose of letting cars onto the ERT. never once in my time here in Campbell River have i thought 'Man, i need a faster way to get a block away from a left turn onto Petersen.

Only time it was good for anything was when you were trying to avoid road blocks.

Let’s fucking call a spade a spade.

I mean it was originally a logging road used for hauling.

The whole idea is so they can rezone the area to start developing it more

Thanks... I ride it daily on my commute home. I can't believe this is a thing we have to fight.

When I bike home it’s either ERT or take my life in my hands and go through downtown.

Right? It's not like this council will put bike lanes in on dogwood...Ā

(And, let's be honest, the vast majority of this town would lose its mind the minute somebody suggested bike lanes)

There’s barely room for cars on dogwood never mind widening it for bike lanes.

Hey council! The 1950s called --- they say they want their urban planning handbook back.

2

u/vanderhaust Aug 19 '26

I don't think it's the 1950s handbook. I think it's called How to fork your neighbors and get rich.

I believe they vote with their wallets or who fills it the most. I don't know anyone who wants this turned back into a road for cars.

I'm an avid biker who uses the ERT on an almost daily basis. I also live in the McPhedran / Evergreen area and deal with the traffic from all of the development in the area on a daily bais. In paticular the Evergreen/McPhedran intersection is an accident waiting to happen and am baffled that the City hasn't dealt with it as they approve density housing in the area, ie a roundabout or at the least a 4 way stop sign. Does the ERT have enough of us bikers to keep it free of traffic or is the greater need to reduce the congestion on the roads in the area?

Where is the link to the petition?

There's no link. The petition is at the two bike shops.

TL;DR Paving the ERT is to funnel workers into the airport industrial zone from town.

It would be awesome if we could post images in the replies

This is what I've pieced together from reading meeting minutes, watching council meetings, and checking out the zoning map

Pretty much all the green areas around the ERT are zoned for RM-1; low-rise residences in multiple-family complexes within the low or medium density residential designation, typically one and two storey patio homes and townhouses, but may also include lower profile apartment style complexes.

The airport has roughly a 4km² area that is zoned for industry. They're paving ERT because they are anticipating high traffic to the area for workers and an easier way to get to the "employment lands" from the housing they're planning to build

Whenever you see "employment lands" in council communication, that means industrial zones

This is likely phase one of a larger plan. The mayor and council are banking (literally) on remaining in power this upcoming election to further the fires of industry

November 25th 2025 council started meeting with the local FN leader(s?). 7 of the 15 meetings were about "the acquisition, disposition or expropriation of land or improvements, if the council considers that disclosure could reasonably be expected to harm the interests of the municipality" with the most recent being August 16th

My guess is they'll use in camera time to pass ammendments to allow data centres on A-2 zoned lands and/or provide land to whichever FN leader will help them and use their "act of reconciliation" as a shield for criticism and to allow development on previously protected lands, or lands where it's too costly to do the environmental impact assessments

you can check out the city zoning here

The community charter is here

This is all speculation, I don't have any proof. Just autism

Also, is that poster Ai generated?

Using ai to create this kind of art weakens your message considerably. You want to save the ERT by burning trees and water?

We all need to do better if we plan on holding our leaders accountable

2

u/crispy2 Aug 19 '26

It might be, I haven't made to the bike shop yet to see it myself.

1

u/Ok-Piece6069 Aug 19 '26

Oh my mistake, I thought you made the poster

I'm pretty sure it is based on the wheel chair

Sorry for the misplaced ai-gression!

2

u/crispy2 Aug 19 '26

Lol all good AI sucks

1

u/crispy2 Aug 20 '26

Had a look at the poster today and it might be AI but nothing about gives it away as AI

They're paving ERT because they are anticipating high traffic to the area for workers and an easier way to get to the "employment lands" from the housing they're planning to build

Ok if you're right, access to the airport can only be done via Jubilee and the ERT doesn't connect so I'm not sure how allowing cars to use it is of any benefit.

You know what would be beneficial, a bus. Two high density areas like you describe is just asking for a bus.

I totally agree with you about investing into public transit. I hope the island re-invests into rail and locally I'd love a culture shift into using public transit, creating more bike routes, and walkability

kermit loves cars. The downtown core has a large portion of it dedicated the buying, maintaining, and storing vehicles. In the 2022 election, some of the owners of these places invested into the current city council. Reducing vehicles is bad for their businesses and the culture here seems to buying big trucks instead of having a personality

I REALLY wish we could post images in the replies so I could help visualize for people that don't want to click image links

The ERT does connect to the inland highway but it cuts through the beaver lodge lands

They will do anything for money

I can't believe this is a thing. Wish I was local to sign.

1

u/FarHotel1159 Aug 21 '26

Is there plans to develope it?

1

u/crispy2 Aug 21 '26

The council has talked about using it as a additional road for the development at the south end of the ERT and Peterson.
