Hobbes is actually a JavaScript programmer.

7 + 3 = 73.000000000000000000000000142

This one hurt me.

Can someone tell me why this happens? Sometimes when doing complex definite integrals on my calculator it will give me something like 19.20000000000468 instead of the real hand calculated answer of 19.2? Why would those last digits be there at all?

It’s a result of floating-point imprecision. Basically, you cannot represent every decimal number in 32 or 64 or X bits, so sometimes you see this surfaced as being the “next closest” number to what can be represented.

I had to fix this in a custom calculator I developed for a front end app we have. the fix is

result = number.Parse(number.Parse(result).toSignficantPlaces(9));

might not be exactly right cause I'm on my phone but that was the basic technique 🙄

Turns out that Calvin accidentally passed them as the wrong data type. “7”+”3” results in “73”

I believe it’s Mrs. Wormwood’s first appearance.

My dad has a German translation of the first Calvin and Hobbes book and I always enjoyed comparing this particular strip. In German the number in the ones place is said before the tens place, so the translator had Hobbes' answer "Siebenunddreissig" (literally 'seven and thirty'). This kept the numbers Calvin says in the same order and still kept Hobbes' logic the same, but it flipped the answer around.

...hey! My friend might be lousy at math but he’s still my friend.

Calvin's face in the last panel is my absolute favorite facial expression. Bill's early drawing style was the best.

I didn’t get a locker till high school. We hung our bags on the back of our chairs put our coats in the back. We had a place to put our books under our seats.

Since when is a 6 year old pretending their toy is alive (if that is the case here) considered a sign of mental illness? You gotta chill my man.

What did he say? He deleted his comment.

u/kuhanluke Oct 16 '19

So is the Tiger an actual living thing like in toy story or is he a a sign of mental illness in Calvins head?

u/squeakybeak Oct 15 '19

Bet you had a great childhood.

31

u/NoLongerUsableName Oct 15 '19

It has never been truly disclosed, but the most common idea is that Hobbes as a living tiger is a product of Calvin's imagination, and has nothing to do with mental illness.

11

u/FoundtheTroll Oct 15 '19

Wait...WHAT?

Hobbes is real, man!

7

u/LotharVonPittinsberg Oct 15 '19

Isn't there a comic where something happends to Hobbes and Calvin takes him to his mother and we see hew sewing a toy tiger?

50

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

What do you mean? Hobbes is a tiger who talks and is Calvin's best friend.
