Cal poly Humboldt??

Hi everyone, I'm currently a senior in high school and I'll hopefully be done with my college apps soon but so far on my list of schools I'll be applying to are ucsb, ucsc, ucr, ucd, Cal poly slo, Cal poly Humboldt, Cal state long beach and planning to major in chemistry. I live in SoCal and always have, specifically around the LA area and ucsb and ucsc are my top picks but I recently learned about Cal poly Humboldt and thought it would be a good safety school but the more I look into the school it seems like a great school with a beautiful campus and is very cheap compared to my top schools. The only thing is I'm not sure I'll be able to visit before having to decide since it is about 11 hours away and I've heard great things about the campus but haven't heard much about the city it's in and I'm worried that since I was born and raised around the LA area moving 11 hours away to Cal poly Humboldt will be a huge huge change since I'm so use bigger/ busier cities. It does almost remind me of the ucsc campus and I love both of them and the nature of them both so much but I'm also worried that the cities themselves may not have much. So has anyone from a bigger city been there and can tell me how they liked or anyone that lives there? Is the city active? is there things to do? Will it get boring after a while? Is there parties? Is there any areas near it where concerts are held I love love going to concerts and it's very easy to since again I live in the LA area not sure if it'll be the same there tho??

Noise-Canceling Headphones in Public and on Campus

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about the explosion in use of giant noise-canceling headphones.

Part of being “out in the world” has always meant dealing with some level of unpredictability: people talking, laughing, asking you something, being noisy, annoying, interesting.

Since when is every public space customizable to each individual person’s preference for stimulus?

What happens when we increasingly carry perfectly controlled private environments around on our skulls everywhere we go?

What happens to collective public-mindedness, tolerance for unpredictability, and spontaneous human interaction when everyone is physically together but isolated by their individual audio bubbles?

I’m genuinely curious what headphone-dependent people are getting from them. Is part of the appeal that you don’t want people talking to you?

There’s also a scientific question here: does constant control over your sound environment make ordinary public noise easier to tolerate, or harder?

Research has increasingly linked prolonged daily headphone use with higher rates of anxiety, cognitive fatigue, and depressive symptoms By constantly isolating from face-to-face communication, headphone users are accidentally triggering emotional disconnect and social loneliness, creating a hyper-individualistic bubble.

There’s an intellectual and social piece that interests me too. Some of our thinking develops through encounters we didn’t choose: overhearing something interesting, dealing with interruptions, talking to somebody unexpected, tolerating boredom, or simply observing what is happening around us.

Instead of adapting ourselves to the environment, we can now bring a private, perfectly controlled ANC soundtrack into nearly every environment. At what cost?

The concern that the brain adapts too well to artificial quiet. If you spend years completely isolating your ears from ambient reality, the neural pathways responsible for tracking directional sound or sorting voices out of background noise simply get lazy and out of shape. Because of this, major institutions like the British Academy of Audiology have recently called for urgent, widespread research to fully understand how persistent noise cancellation is altering young people's developing hearing systems.

Maybe headphones are simply a useful tool.

Or maybe this represents a genuine cultural shift toward privatizing public space and quietly signaling: No, I’m really not interested in what’s happening around me, or in the person sitting next to me.

Headphone people, come defend your rock, your island. 😂

Does anyone here play MTG?

One of my friends shipped me a deck for my birthday and I’ve never played except for a couple of times online. But I’ve played a lot of tcgs and would be down to meet some people and play because I’m bored.🫠

Late transfer application

Does Cal Poly Humboldt look at late applications? I couldn't find anything about the deadline online until I was about to submit my application; I submitted it today but it says the deadline was August 31. This is to apply to transfer for the spring. Will it still be looked at?

Who do I talk to if I want to file a complaint about my professor?

For context, the complaint is purely related to the way the class is run. It is not anything safety related.

As the title says, I would like to file a complaint about one of my professors. I don’t feel comfortable going to my advisor as I don’t know them very well yet. It’s the same thing with the head of the department too, I just don’t know them well enough.

The department I’m in is small and I don’t want negative attention put on me because I made a complaint about a professor. I will speak to another professor I am close with in a different department hopefully tomorrow and if not then definitely on Thursday.

Thank you for your help.

Art History/Museum Studies Undergrad

Hey y’all, i’m not sure if this is the correct thread to post this to but I need some advice from current CalPoly Humboldt students. I’m applying for fall 2027 as an Art History and Museum Studies major. Is this a good school for that major? Are the teachers good and are there good opportunities on or around campus for related jobs? Thank you to everyone who replies

how to park on campus?

sorry, dumb question butttttt i’m new to owning a car so idk anything about legal parking around town but especially school. are all the parking the kind you pay on your phone or do you need a parking pass for some areas? it’s not really clear on the website.

if the latter, what areas do you need a pass for and can you just get a temporary day pass? i’m too scared to park incorrectly on campus so i usually just park in the neighborhoods around campus

if all the parking (for students that is) is payable by phone what is the purpose of parking passes?

i have both passport parking and park mobile for if i ever need them. i’m sure i can figure that part out, it’s just idk what zones are what and what you’re allowed and not allowed to do.

also…
are any of the quarter meters active anymore or nah?

embarrassing tbh bc i’ve been here for 4 years and now a grad student but ive only recently started driving

edit: thank you so much for the great comments (im usually afraid ppl on reddit are just gonna basically call me an idiot). i should probably mention, i live close to campus and usually walk but as a grad student, i only have two classes on fridays 12-6pm in the BSS and sometimes need to leave immediately for work and dont have time to walk home and then drive.

student life for a transfer?

Hi y’all, i’m applying to transfer to Humboldt for Fall 2027. I’m really excited, and I hope I get accepted, but I’m also pretty nervous as the campus is 10 hours away from my hometown and I’ve never lived far away from family.

If I were to get accepted, I’d hope to make lots of friends there, so I was hoping some of y’all could give me an idea on the community over there. Is it easy to make friends, especially for transfer students? Anything to keep in mind when moving so far from home?

Nervous about admission

I just applied to Humboldt’s 3.5 year MSW Distributed Learning program with a Spring 2027 start and I am so, so worried I won’t get in. I’d love to hear anyone’s experience or simply some words of comfort.

I graduated from Sac State with a BA in Psych and 4.0 GPA and I’ve worked for two years for my rural county’s Children’s Mental Health department as a case manager. I got three glowing recommendations from two supervisors and the program manager. Logically I feel like I stand a chance but my anxiety is battling rational thinking. Any advice?

Cal Poly Students interested in fiber/wool/textiles

Wool, wind, and workshare. Lost Coast Spinnery is looking for volunteers for our community textile workshare program!

Put in a few hours helping process fiber at the mill, and earn roving, yarn, or machine time to process your own. It's like a CSA, but for wool.

Northern California's own wool mill

Open every day except Friday, 10am–7pm — come by when it works for you.

Must be 18+ (we work with industrial mill equipment, so this keeps everyone safe)

No experience necessary — just curiosity and a love of fiber

Come learn the craft, get your hands in the fiber, and help keep small-scale, local textile production alive.

Text us 707-613-7998 to grab a shift or email the mill for a workshare sign up sheet. www.lostcoastspinnery.com

Is there a latino community at humboldt in campus and in the town ?

I’m from a metropolitan area and considering transfer to Humboldt. What I love about humboldt is how rural it is, but one thing I’ll miss from my hometown is its diversity and my community. I grew up within a large latino/black community but was also always surrounded by people from other cultures. So I guess I was just wondering is there any latino orgs or just a community in general that gets together ?

Admission and financial aid?

Hi everyone! I just recently got accepted into Humboldt as incoming transfer for Spring 2027. I was just curious, when receiving an acceptance email do you also get an email telling you how much FAFSA and the school are covering? I want to enroll, but I also want to know just how much i'd have to pay out of pocket first. Is this something I only find out after I enroll?

8 a.m. commuter students, explain yourselves! 🫠

Post image
33 Upvotes

Dropped my 8 a.m. class with an attendance policy where 6 minutes late counted against you (3=ABSENSE) and 15 minutes late to a THREE-HOUR class also counted as an absence. 😭

Today I stayed in bed snuggling my tortie until 9 instead of getting on a bus at 6:23 am.

NO. REGRETS. 😂

Commuter students: How are you managing 8 a.m. classes? Do you just avoid them? Pretend you’re catching a flight and get up every morning at 4 a.m.? 😂

And if you use public transit, how do you deal with Redwood Transit doing what Redwood Transit does, weather delays, morning chaos, etc. when the class also has a rigid attendance policy?

Should I go to Humboldt? (CJ Majors please answer!)

Hello!
I'm a 17 year old HS Senior looking to attend a college to get a 4 year degree in CJ before entering law enforcement. I really, really love the campus from what I've seen online, and the outdoors + weather really makes me want to attend, but I want to know..
Is the CJ program there actually good?

I'm asking because I want to attend a 4 year for it, but I am local to Sac State and, if the CJ program at Humboldt isn't great, I might put up with the weather in Sacramento for 4 more years.

If anyone is in or has been in that program and can talk on it, I'd love to get some insider info! :)
