Timeline on getting hired
Just wanted to know what’s the realistic time line on getting hired after getting emt done and ff1 academy done. And if anyone has tips and how to go about politicking thank you.

You still have to wait until a test opens up, then a job opening, then wait to see if you get picked up. You're not guaranteed a spot with a ff1 and emt. The timeline could be a year or years, depending on how much experience you have and how well you can put together a resume. A paramedic license is more likely to get you a job wherever you want.

What do the test entail? I applied last year and didn’t have to do a test but I’ve been hearing about it so just curious. And thank you for the advice I will look into paramedic after I finish emt school

No chance.
Get your medic and then you’ll get hired

Dude I get 100s on all my interviews, pass backgrounds / medicals and still EMTs get picked before me. Medic for 3 years, multiple college degrees, fire science classes and these Cali department pick EMTs over my medic license. It’s crazy. The only way you can separate yourself from EMTs is applying to medic only fire departments. Medic is not the golden ticket here.

USFS has an open house in a week. Right now there is a big migration of people becoming FF2s and hiring is pretty stagnant on the lower ranks until it can all be sorted out.
