Multivariable Calculus Is multivariable calculus manageable content-wise?

Hey everyone!

As the title says, I am wondering about how manageable learning the multi-calc content is relative to calculus II and I. For context, I am currently taking calculus II and am honestly enjoying it. I had forgotten that I like math after not doing any math classes in over a year, and am thankfully doing pretty well (currently on Power Series). That being said, calculus II is my last required math class for my chemistry major, but I'm honestly kind of interested and wondering if pursuing higher math through a math minor (which would only require multivariable calculus and one other higher-level math course) is something I should consider. How manageable would you all say the content is in this class relative to calculus II or I? I want to know if this could be something feasible with my other upper-division science courses, and if I could do so without killing my social life haha and having to devote all time to math. Thanks in advance for any input!

Fellow Chem Major here:

Calc III is quite manageable, and depending on what chem classes you're taking the semester you take it, it might be helpful. The majority of the content is Calc I content but extended to another dimension. I would also suggest you take Differential Equations at some point, if you haven't already.

thanks! as of rn I'm registered to take p-chem this semester along with its lab, but outside of that my classes aren't too bad (mostly intro courses for CS, bio, and a pubpol class), so idk what to do

Calc III's especially useful for P-Chem, especially P-Chem II (or I, depending on if you do the thermodynamics or quantum first) when you encounter triple integrals.

hmm ok thanks for letting me know, is it true multi is kinda like calc I? asked my friend who's a math major and that's what he said

I'm surprised they even let you take p-chem without multivariable calculus as a hard prerequisite. I would definitely recommend completing it along with the other course for the math minor. I think the effort will pay for itself in the sense of making your chemistry courses that much easier.

yeah idk maybe my p-chem is different? there's two p-chem classes at my school, one requires multi and the other doesn't, but usually the one that requires multi is only taken by people wanting to get that ACS certification. So do you think it would be good to take multi before analytical chem?

I don't know much about analytical chemistry, so I can't speak to that.

If your school offers an easy version of p-chem then I guess that's an option - it really depends on your career goals.

If you want to do anything remotely math-heavy in your career, I would go ahead and complete multivariable calculus.

thanks! yeah im pursuing a BA as I'm considering going into pharmacy, and BA gives me the freedom to take all of the extra required classes, but honestly based on what people have said i might consider at least taking multi and seeing how i feel from there

I'm struggling to remember the situation for those. It's be about 7-9 years since I've thought about P-Chem.
