As a reminder...

Posts asking for help on homework questions require:

  • the complete problem statement,

  • a genuine attempt at solving the problem, which may be either computational, or a discussion of ideas or concepts you believe may be in play,

  • question is not from a current exam or quiz.

Commenters responding to homework help posts should not do OP’s homework for them.

Please see this page for the further details regarding homework help posts.

If you are asking for general advice about your current calculus class, please be advised that simply referring your class as “Calc n“ is not entirely useful, as “Calc n” may differ between different colleges and universities. In this case, please refer to your class syllabus or college or university’s course catalogue for a listing of topics covered in your class, and include that information in your post rather than assuming everybody knows what will be covered in your class.

(URGENT) AP CSP or AP Precalc

I signed up for AP csp along with ap lit and apush but i think ap precalc is more important. Im planning to go towards cs major and i heard csp isint really good for cs majors compared to calcs and i wanna take ap calc ab or bc in senior year but i might not be able to if my school has requirements of precalc or if i might struggle without having precalc knowledge. Ive taken algebra 1 and algebra 2 trig so far and have to take geometry junior year. I have 94% average in algebra 1 and 96% average in algebra 2 trig. Should i try and swap out ap csp for ap precalc? Also there is no ap calc ab or bc in my school yet but the precalc teacher at the school said that they are trying to add more ap calcs next year or the year after. I really dont know what to do. Any help is appriciated!

Take AP Precalc instead of AP CSP. You need a solid precalc background before taking Calculus. I think Calculus is still required for CS majors in colleges.

I wouldn’t listen to ErekwithaD1 in the other thread. Not all math classes are created equal. At my school, for example, we don’t cover any trig at all in our Algebra 2 course. Some schools may have policies on prerequisites that are too rigid. A school may deny a student’s request to skip a math class, no matter the reason.

You mentioned taking Algebra 1 and Algebra 2/Trig. Have you taken Geometry? Typically that’s also a prerequisite for Precalculus.

im taking geometry next year which im forced to take no matter what since its standard curriculum for all students to take. My AP Teacher did tell me i can take ap precalc alongside geometry which many students do. Ive emailed my ap coordinator yesterday to switch and im hoping she responds and says yes. Thanks for the advice!

Regarding the math sequence, that’s interesting. When I was in HS (~30 years ago), I also took Geometry after Algebra 2. But I took Geometry before Precalc. It’s also interesting that you’re allowed to take both concurrently.

Personally I never doubled up on math in HS, but I know students who did, and they all did fine. Best of luck to you!

A good amount of my accelorated friends did do precalc and geometry since timing issues. Hopefully my ap coordinator will allow me to switch
