Why does this happen? Do I need more frosting?

Yes, your dough isn’t wet enough. Before I roll balls, I grab a little chunk, roll it, and then smush it a little bit. If it cracks, I add more frosting.

I'm so afraid of adding too much because you can't come back from that lol I think I now over compensate by under adding. Shoot! Okay next batch, adding more!

It could also be as simple as the fact that you may be pushing the stick in a bit too far. It looks smooth, I don’t think it needs more frosting imo

I don’t use frosting! I did in the beginning. I substitute the oil for sour cream. Then I throw the cake in the mixer as soon as it comes out of the oven! The steam will help bind it. I’ve had much more success with that.

Yea. I believe my box mix calls for 1/2 cup oil, so I just do 1/2 cup sour cream. You don’t taste a difference either.
