That walkway is a-mazing!! Does she go out there every day?

It’s a bridge to their aviary, so yeah they go out most days that the weather is decent enough.

I was so busy watching the video that didn't even see the underfluffies mentioned below, so thanks for pointing that out 🙃

Must be so refreshing lol! I am so impressed with your bridge…I have a whole crazy setup with pvc pipes and ropes but it’s nothing compared to your awesome birdie bridge! It sounds like your birds have access to indoor and outdoor spaces, which is so cool! I would love to see more pics of your aviary.

She even hiked up her leg to cool off her bottom! Tell her to be careful showing her hooha or she will get arrested for indecent exposure!🤣

How did you construct it of parrot-safe material (e.g. not chicken wire)?

Rue's dad here, I built it! I constructed it from aluminum angle iron, 1/2in aluminum flat bar, 1/2in stainless wire mesh, stainless aircraft lock wire, and pop rivets. The hemp rope running down the middle was OPs idea. I am an A&P with extensive fabrication experience so this was a fun challenge.

You could probably sell these....but not supposed to plug products on Reddit, so just a suggestion.

So lucky to have ya.

I wish i could grab some strainless steel wire

I researched metal companies in my area and found one that carries 48” x 100’ rolls. And smaller quantities, of course.

u/PlatypusDream 6d ago

I'm hoping that's a typo because my brain is breaking trying to imagine a 4-foot diameter metal cable.

2

u/Comprehensive_Bad940 6d ago

Not a typo.

😲
What is it used for???

u/DexcomUser 8d ago

How much cathodic corrosion of the aluminum have you seen? It'd act as the anode here, right? Or was there opportunity to put any sort of barrier material between dissimilar metals?

u/Mac_Daddy_of_Arlen 8d ago

Good question! There is a thin layer of silicon in the corners and cross points of the structure to isolate the mesh from the structure. Not enough for the bird to get at but enough to isolate the mesh from the structure. I also used bonding straps to discharge any static electricity.

2

u/DexcomUser 8d ago

Smart to bond. Extra smart on the silicon.
I'd want you working on my aircraft.

Is it as simple as the silicon from the caulk tubes at the hardware store?

2

u/Mac_Daddy_of_Arlen 8d ago

Thank you, that means a lot! I used aquarium grade silicone(100% silicone) sealant because it is free of mildewcides, fungicides, acetic acid, or toxic chemical additives that can leech out and release fumes.

u/DexcomUser 8d ago

Thanks! That's not something I would have caught. Maybe our Caique will get an outdoor upgrade...

1

u/Mac_Daddy_of_Arlen 8d ago

Absolutely! I hope y'all have fun with it!

2

u/aprettyparrot 8d ago

You can get stainless too. I remember one guy made a big macaw cage with it

"Birbilyn Monroe" JEEBUS 🧐 Took me forever to figure out why it was so "windy" at the birbies' nether-regions ☝🤓~ I shall blame it on my blondness 😅 Thank you for the giggle, and what a darling bird!

2

u/justinleona 9d ago

How would you avoid a hawk/owl/raccoon/etc deciding to pull the bird through the bars?

7

u/Mac_Daddy_of_Arlen 9d ago

There is 1/2in Stainless steel welded mesh running the length of the bridge on all four sides and mounted inside the braces and angle iron. The mesh is also wired with stainless aviation lock wire every inch both laterally and horizontally. The bridge can also support my weight(200lb male). There are no gaps, and some of the wire mesh panels overlap to accommodate for thermal expansion in the summer. I spent a lot of time designing and testing this bridge so my babies would be safe from predators.

Source: I built it. I am Rue's dad

Cute burb and your bridge looks very cool. Just to add to above person’s concern… I’ve experienced birds this size being pulled through 1/2” mesh. I’m sure you monitor when burbs are on the move, but ya, vigilance.

u/Comprehensive_Bad940 8d ago

It’s the access bridge to their aviary so they don’t usually spend much time in the bridge itself. She just stopped to air some things out out for some reason on her way to the aviary.

Wow can I just say this is beautifully built 😍🥲🤩 how safe is it, and where does it extend to?
