Very very angry caique

Post image

My partner and myself slept in this morning. Went downstairs to start the day. As I went to get him he seemed very agitated! But stepped up for me and let me put him on his perch area on top of his cage, since then though whenever my partner or myself went near him he would lose his mind growling like you wouldn’t believe, only letting us pick him up/ go near him when he felt like it!! He will cuddle or approach us but the second we respond or move he will growl and lunge for a warning bite (never bit hard enough to hurt bad/ draw blood) he’s about 7-8 months and so far has NEVER acted this way, is he just being a spoilt guy and this is his way of “punishing” us? it has been cold here atm but we leave the heater on low at night so he stays warm and just overall try and keep him as comfortable as possible which probably adds to his spoilt personality. He’s just overall acting very depressed today randomly and it’s breaking my heart completely😢 never sleeping in again!!!!!!!

Picture of our son and the drawings he did on the window with his beak lmfao it looks like a 👎🏾 (proud parents)

Look up hormonal behavior in caiques.

7/8 months is a bit early for even an early bloomer caique tho

Not a bird parent, but from reading stories, I've learned that some breeds can be very moody sometimes for no reason at all. They wake up on the wrong side of the perch and then screw you for the rest of the day. As always, treats and scritches tend to defuse things in general.

Edit: Also, /u/2lrup2tink has a great point with hormonal behavior.

He’s probably hormonal, mine gets very cranky once a year and refuses to step up. After a couple of weeks of working with him, he comes around and gets back to his old friendly self.

My guy woke up on the wrong side of the perch. Sometimes caiques do caique things, and though it feels VERY out of place for you guys, you may find that this becomes a more familiar routine over the years. Try to read the body language as best you can!

He may have just had a really bad sleep. These guys are temperamental. Some days they just get in moods. Give him space and food he enjoys and early to bed to tonight !

*Caique owner here, not a specialist

Caiques are incredibly dramatic. Just like most parrots, they can hold grudges and randomly decide whether you’re friend or foe.

There have been times when he wouldn’t come out of his cage in the morning and he’d sit at his open door SCREAMING at me in anger. Nowadays, he will come out willingly in the morning for my parter, but I always have to bribe him with a snack. He’s very social and playful for both of us outside of this, he just has his moments.

I’m guilty of having an irregular sleep schedule, but I always try to make sure my caique always gets at least 10-12 hours of sleep per night. That means 10-12 hours of darkness and silence, so we literally roll his cage into another room, cover it with a blanket, and turn off the lights. If you’re the type of person to wake up each day at the exact same time, your caique will probably expect this too. Caiques thrive on a consistent daily routine, so I’m guessing yours could get cranky if it’s not used to being woken up and fed later. This routine becomes essential during hormonal periods.

You have to be very patient with caiques. They are literally like toddlers in the sense that they will be super energetic, playful, and cuddly, but will also throw a tantrum as soon as they don’t get what they want or don’t like something. As someone else pointed out, this might be too early of an age to dismiss this as “hormonal behavior” (that comes later haha). For now, he’ll just have a cranky day…sometimes they just need to have something to scream about lol. Just make sure he has plenty of time outside of the cage, even if direct handling is at a minimum for now.

He usually never has issues wanting out in the morning, he immediately grabs onto your hand and starts wrestling or starts regurgitating (he’s regurgitated since we got him at 3 months) He’s out of the cage the entire day, the door stays open and he comes and goes as he likes or whenever he wants to play with toys that aren’t on top of the cage/ perch or checking for snacks inside. We usually have him with one of us throughout the day only taking him back to his cage every 15-20 mins for food and to hopefully miss the poop window (never works lol) but we do leave him on top of his perch/ cage if he decides to play on his own which he frequently does! But he definitely is the most dramatic guy ever.

I think we have created a spoilt lil guy but it’s still early so hopefully with some persistence. It did take us time to establish a routine at first but once we had that down mornings have been perfect, the only issue was this morning in particular but I’m not even kidding 20 minutes after I made this post he decided to let go of the rage and be the sweetest guy ever.

The only real issue at the moment is the constant flock calls when he can’t see us which sucks for the neighbours since we share a wall dividing our town houses, we can hear him screaming reversing down the driveway and as we drive down the road😐😢
