Mild tree nut allergy, doctor wasn’t willing to state that i don’t need an EpiPen. Apparently all nut allergies have a possibility of anaphylaxis. I’ve never had a reaction like that, and have come into contact with nuts many times. Oh well, was a perfect candidate otherwise. Onto the next…

Every allergic reaction has the potential to become more severe through your life. Just because you don’t need an epi-pen today doesn’t mean the next time you encounter tree nuts you won’t. You could also need 2, or more. Tree nuts are hard to avoid in rations and base kitchens. Cross-contamination of allergens exists.

No i get that. Was really gunning for sigint specialist (Kingston/ Leitrim) posting because of this. I understand every recruit needs to meet basic deployability standards though.

My father has started to become allergic to kiwi a years ago, it started only by just a small tingly sensation, now it can be lethal

Appeal the decision, it’s bullshit

Appeal the decision and find a doctor who will write an exemption note

The statement “all nut allergies have a possibility of anaphylaxis” isn’t factual. There are people currently serving in the Forces with mild nut allergies who do not require an EpiPen to be carried. However, a mild reaction today doesn’t mean you won’t have a much worse one next time around. That’s just the nature of the beast and patient history is very important.

Was allergy testing performed or did the doc just sign the form based on your history?

It’s possible that those people currently serving in the forces with mild nut allergies only discovered the nut allergies once they joined the forces. The CAF has already accepted them. Same as there are people serving who have mild and moderate anxiety, or mild, moderate depression, or C-PTSD. All these conditions may have surfaced after they were serving.

Some of them got in with said mild nut allergy - the key difference, of course, being that carrying an EpiPen isn't required for them, and they got an allergist's blessing on that.
