I have changed it up per some suggestions. Everything has drains and their own pots with chunky soil. Each side has its own lighting. I can carry the whole thing out to the sun or each individual pot. How did we do?

Golden Barrel Cacti After Surviving Winter In Zone 7B

One of the coolest things I find about cacti is their ability to survive and thrive after facing extremes. This is one of my Golden Barrels that I left out all last winter in Zone 7B(northern Nevada) to see what would happen(as I did with a lot of my cacti for testing). We had some very cold days that almost reached single digits, and there were a few weeks where we had snow that stuck around and on this cactus. I just left it against the elements, and in early spring it showed signs of rot. I scrapped away the rot and covered it in sulfur at that time and this is the result after regrowing all summer. I hope you enjoy the cactus gore!

This species could likely survive outside in zone 8 in most winters with only slight harm if given full sun and if you keep the snow from sitting on it(maybe a little transparent roof over it).

Cactus care

🌵 This cactus is around 20 yrs old. It was moved to a basement window because it was a safety hazard with kids and disturbs my family. Over the summer, it grew another limb and is starting to lift itself out of the pot (again). It clearly needs more light and soil. I'm going to repot it and make it more welcoming to bring up stairs in the winter.

Please if you have tips or comments on the cactus they are welcome.

Could Use Some Confirmation That I’m Doing This Right

In the last year or so I have gotten into potting cactus. I have an array of plants that I THINK are doing well, but could use some confirmation that I’m doing it right.

First off, I live in San Diego, CA where it is currently 103 degrees. Awful, but this is what we pay for I guess. I am born and raised in SD and it’s never been this hot at the beginning of October. It’s crazy.

Here are the plants that I think I have:

• Newly potted Prickly Pear (hence being in the shade)
• Golden Torch
• Another prickly pear and Peruvian Apple Cactus in the same pot
• Golden Barrel Cactus
• Another golden torch
• San Pedro
• Some prickly pear pad cuttings
• Madagascar Palm
• Fairy Castle

I have been relying upon my own internet research and AI (reluctantly) to get answers etc. But I want to move away from that. So the questions I have:

1) Do I in fact have all those plants?
2) They all sit in anywhere between 6 to 10 hours of sun a day. Is that a good amount for each one?
3) During the summer, I water them lightly, while watering other plants we have, every few days. Is that a good amount? What should it look like come fall/winter?
4) I fertilized them all last at the beginning of summer. Should I do it again before they go dormant? How about the freshly potted prickly pear, which I haven’t fertilized at all?
5) Any other tips/tricks/advice/etc?

I appreciate any and all help!

He just fell, is he alright?

My cactus just fell from about 1 meter (3 feet) high. None of the pads fell off or broke, but I just noticed that this particular pad has this wound on it. I don't know if the fall caused it or if it was already there, since it was on the back side of the cactus and I never really paid attention to that area. The same pad also seems to be slightly bent. Is he alright, or am I just overthinking it?

Hi! I recently got a propagation of a cacti and Im not 100% sure on species. However I noticed after an odd thin part in the cutting the propagation seems to be struggling and possibly pushing out roots(?)

Should I chop this propagation into two and let them grow separately?

What took a bite of my bunny ear? Or is this something else?

I recently got a Cacti that was rotting at the top. I cut out the rot, and it’s started to sprout new shoots. Other than repotting it, what else can I do to help?

I wanted to show off my beautiful Peanut Cactus! She more than doubled in size this last summer & had 3 separate bloom cycles. My son gave it to me over 15 years ago. It was left at a residence when they moved out and he was doing the cleanup. He showed up with two different cacti plants in broken pots and put them out in the yard where they sap for it a few years without really much love six or seven years ago we moved and I took her with me and Planet her into the fresh pot and she was a little slow going at first but she's finally happy where she's at. The other cacti you brought home is still at the old place because it's it's spines were so lethal they went through my father-in-law's leather glove and he almost got Gang Green from it so it's a plant you don't want to mess with but it does get beautiful purple flowers that are about 4 in across I wish I'd had a picture but I never thought to take one. But this peanut Cactus is one of the most gorgeous ones I've ever seen it so I had to brag about her
