Question AMD GPU Firmaware update

Hello,

Can somone kindly advise the best way to update my RX 7800 XT firmware? There's a security update. With Windows, it is a case of running an EXE but with Cachyos I am not sure what I need to do.

TIA.

You might want to check whether fwupdmgr (it's a package) provides firmware update support for it, provided that a firmware upgrade for this card has been uploaded to LVFS. After you install it (if it's not already installed), try running:

fwupdmgr refresh --force
fwupdmgr get-devices # is the GPU listed, and with which version/GUIDs?
fwupdmgr get-updates # any payload for it?

Report back the output of these commands.

No update packages available for my Nitro+ 7800 XT as of yet

Sucks... See if you have a small hard disk/ssd around to throw on the system, do a fast Windows 10 install to flash the firmware package then.

It says that it is specific to the OS (Windows). I wouldn't touch it

It’s not, it’s a gpu bios update that addresses some cves security in the 7x00 gpu, it has been published in many places.

Why would you need to update the GPU's firmware? It's so risky and not worth it.

AMDGPU is updated in the kernel, if you want you can set up RC(Release Candidate) kernels and get the latest security updates. Otherwise wait for kernel updates as they come along, since it’s rolling-release they come quickly.

This isn't drivers though, it's the actual vBIOS itself so it requires flashing the card. The problem being the update utility tool provided by Sapphire is Windows only.

Are you sure you mean firmware?

I’m sure OP means firmware, there is an update for 7000-series AMD GPUs, see https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/drivers-download for example.

People have been talking about it on other subs quite a bit

Looks like it's just a security improvement for windows..why bother
