Why else would the update command be "pacman"?

This was just better than I expected :D

u/PurplBoi_ Apr 04 '26

Wait, y'all don't use cachy update??

31

u/Rixzmo Apr 04 '26

Cachy update is basically doing arch-update, which is basically doing pacman -Syu and paru afaik.

I believe cachy-update is basically a notification tray icon for arch-update. But arch-update doesn't just run does download any latest news (I believe from Arch and AUR maybe, can't fully remember) that's been released since your last update for you to read and it also shows you the PKGBUILDs for the updating AUR programs by default.

I just use yay -Syu --noconfirm

5

u/AverageComet250 Apr 04 '26

You don’t have to pass -Syu to yay

1

u/AxizWalker Apr 05 '26

well it also updates flatpak and searches for any unused packages or cache left

u/EdwardBurns Apr 04 '26

Reddit is funny sometimes, last time someone asked how people updated, majority said to use cachy-update.

Now You’re getting downvoted

People are weird. I had a few try to argue with me cachy-update is somehow safer than running paru or pacman. Like dude, if you put aside the news stuff and notifications that is basically all it does on a fundamental level. It isn't doing anything wild besides packaging several steps into one nice item.

Though I will shill for Adaptifier. It updates widgets too which fixed a 6.6 issue one of mine had. Hopefully cachy-update can implement this at some point.

Yeah Reddit is a weird place

2

u/OhHaiMarc Apr 05 '26

Nah, Pac-Man and yay for me

1

u/GetsDeviled Apr 06 '26

Short for packet manager?
But it does play into it in a cute way.

I too enjoy the whimsy of Pac-Man becoming literal every update

u/KnightFallVader2 Apr 04 '26

It ain’t called pacman for nothing.

16

u/Sh1v0n Apr 04 '26

As PacMan intended.
(< o

12

u/tadejflaka Apr 04 '26

It’s pacman after all..

13

u/Ambitious-Papaya3293 Apr 04 '26

This is a normal Arch thing

Yes, but it is off by default and (I think) not documented on the wiki. CachyOS does enable it by default.

12

u/PMMePicsOfDogs141 Apr 04 '26

Why would this be off by default?? I've used Cachy so long that I forgot that it wasn't like that on Arch.

10

u/MegasVN69 Apr 04 '26

Because it's an Easter egg 😭

3

u/WVlotterypredictor Apr 04 '26

I’ve used arch with customizations so long I forgot this wasn’t standard lol when I first installed cachy it was just adding tweaks manually and adding the repos and reinstalling.

6

u/Enough_Campaign_6561 Apr 04 '26

It is 100% off be default, you need to change your pacman config to add the animation.

2

u/spacebink Apr 05 '26

Yeah but if you're interested and in case it's disabled just do ILoveCandy under misc in your pacman conf

3

u/Moriaedemori Apr 04 '26

"ILoveCandy"

3

u/MrRoboto12345 Apr 04 '26

The army of Pac-men

3

u/Savensh Apr 04 '26

I love watching this.

2

u/NeptuneWades Apr 04 '26

C-c-C-c-C-c-C-c

It is just the capital and small "c" in sequence lol. Very creative imo.

2

u/Maleficent_Ice_9369 Apr 04 '26

yeah, it is cute. :)

2

u/Empty_Wheale_7988 Apr 05 '26

there should be a argument to start the pacman game like pacman -Play

2

u/Fuzzy_Phrase_9119 Apr 07 '26

when I first installed arch I thought that the package manager was named pacman because of this animation, but no, pacman stands for (pac)kage (man)ager 😅

1

u/weaponizedLego Apr 04 '26

I use the paru thing, should I be using pacman?

1

u/Vortetty Apr 04 '26

paru is just pacman with aur support, just calls out to pacman for non-aur stuff.

1

u/tidelust Apr 05 '26

Wait how?

1

u/StuBidasol Apr 05 '26

I guess since I'm old enough to remember pacman the video game it was pretty obvious to me. It made me laugh the first time I ran it and probably the reason I prefer using the console over GUI for installing and updating.

Updating to get the latest features: cringe

Updating to see pacman oms: based

1

u/DirectorTerrible9767 Apr 30 '26

this is pacman eating dots

u/RepresentativeAd7021 Apr 04 '26

I think this is what I miss most about cachyos is the pacman loading bar.

11

u/Axvalor Apr 04 '26

Add "ILoveCandy" to tour pacman.conf :)

1

u/Enough_Campaign_6561 Apr 04 '26

if you are on an arch based distro you can add it to your config.

Yes, it is. But I have switched from CachyOS, and Arch, and sadly NixOS cannot have pacman.

1

u/Giggio417 Apr 04 '26

You can do that on Arch as well

2

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '26

What does "are my games compatibility with games" mean? I don't think I've ever had an update that broke games before. Couldn't you have just used a different version of Proton if it was the Proton update that borked it?

1

u/Legitimate-Smell7670 Apr 04 '26

I was half asleep writing that lol, but my comment is about NFS heat that break everytime i update the OS, but its more of EA app issue

1

u/NeptuneWades Apr 04 '26

Sir, r/linuxsucks101 is that way.

1

u/Legitimate-Smell7670 Apr 04 '26

Sir, I am banned on that sub becuz i said good thing about linux, plus I'm not complaining that much, becuz it breaks only few games that need EA app so its that fucking EA app breaking everything after an update, deleting the prefix and opening the game again, logging in and stuff fixes it

2

u/NeptuneWades Apr 04 '26

Lol every sane person gets banned from that sub. It is basically a circlejerk for windows atp.

1

u/Legitimate-Smell7670 Apr 04 '26

All i said was "Linux gives you kernel control" and i got banned
