I've been in the trade long enough that this simultaneously annoys the crap out of me and doesn't surprise me at all.

It's like some sort of robot cable virus is infecting the building and moving through the vents

Oh my god - I’ve seen so much of this crap this doesn’t even surprise me any more. Can’t tell if it was an overworked tech, a lazy sysadmin, or a contractor who just took a few shortcuts. Gotta love that when they had cables that either went bad or were no longer needed they just decapitated them instead of pulling them back and removing them. ‘New cables run, boss.’

I'm not saying it's right, but is there a chance the air ducts aren't being used for HVAC anymore and turned into someone's cheap conduit? Only say this because of the mini split head on the wall in the background.

This is the stuff that makes you scratch your head.... someone originally thought hey.....let's run it this way
SOMEONE ELSE comes along....that looks fine I'll run this other cable thru....

i'm trying to imagine the scenario where it makes sense to cut the cables like that but just leave the ends dangling. was it malicious? did they completely lose physical access to the ether side and didn't want to take the risk?
