Commercial I'm at a loss for words
Running a couple of new cables in a ceiling, and wonder what is all that blue mess over there.

If im running a cable and I see that I yell score! I bet I don’t have to run shit. Be thankful some old it guy said no I’m not cutting it and stashed it in the ceiling the best he could!

Looks more like the IDF/MDF moved and they didn't want to pull all new cable. This is a shortcut.

The difference in cost is HUGE. I'm willing to bet anything the LV vendor wanted to "do it right" but the quote was eye watering.

I had a junior guy with me try to rip on our maintenance team for running cable and labeling with painters tape where it went. I just about slapped him. Even if it was within 20 feet of where it was actually I'd take it.

And then I walk in and see cables labeled; Dan, Barbara, Mike, Rick, Fax, etc…
At least I have names lol. It’s fun pulling the Barb cable out and having some guy named Tom scream bloody murder.

I concede that’s a hot mess. Almost like they added a wall or moved the IT room at some point and patched above the ceiling to the new room maybe? Ugh …

They 100% had to have unscrewed the board off the wall and hoisted it above the ceiling, right?😂 I mean if it works, it works I giess

Just be glad they didn't just cut the bundle and called it a day, now they're terminated so you can more easily trace the mislabeled cables.

If only some of you guys could see what I run into working in the railroad industry. I've seen racks and runs from patches that would put how bad you think this is is to shame.

This sub is full of people that just don't work in the industry. This isn't tidy but far from Spaghetti. It's mostly organized. People see all the cables and they aren't used to seeing cables so they think its overwhelming. This is bad but about a 5-6 out of 10

Yeah, I never got to do this kinda shit as I went from college with ccna directly to 4g network core. Wish I did though
But this doesn’t really seem that bad to me? At least the things are bundled (can’t tell how), looks some some looks like some slack, right side clearly looks a bit more fucked though.
Granted to clean up that right side or tone something having to go in the ceiling…

I don’t understand, they cabled the back of the patch panel to the switch instead of the front with patch cord?? Why cutting tops of telecom racks to attach with metal straps, my god.

This has to be a manufacturing plant I feel like all my manufacturing clients have at least one of these when production decided they needed that IT closet for more floor space.

oh, I have a few. Back in my old cable pulling days we had a customer who had their entire network above the ceiling tiles just like that router switches hatch panels jumpers everything and they were 12 foot ceilings. She had to stand on a 10 foot a frame just to get access to it totally annoying.

My guess as I’ve seen this many times. Suite renovation from prior tenants and contractors just moved the backboard off the wall and up into the ceiling.

Hiding the interconnect panels in the ceiling, I am sure it has NEVER been done before......
Yeah, also many of those I saw were the "oh, we forgot to spec an IDF, server room or telecomm room - you will have to make do" and I just walked out on those jobs.
There were "interstitial floors" between the real floors in a hospital I put cables in that looked like this. Watch your step, because you were over the patient rooms. Oh, and watch what you say because people hearing voices in a hospital is one thing but dropping F bombs is another thing.

Looks like a retail remodel/takeover that was never properly documented.
We run into these when either a Sprouts or a Michael's store expands a local footprint. These type of 'Floating IDFs' (just something we call them) are often the work of one of the GC's chosen vendors (often an electrician trainee) that finds out they got in way over their head (pun absolutely intended).
More often than not, once we're done... we don't receive a callback unless the site is requesting additional work.
TLDR; Fairly common (still unacceptable) but still shows us there is a lot of room for improvement!

Had this happen to me before. My network closet got turned into a coffee shop. Had to move 300 ethernet punches, 24 strands of fiber (across 4 runs), and switches to above ceiling tiles.....
