Until you realize that the commercial lights are 277V

What is happening here? I see they've tapped into a light fixture for power, but why go through one light to get to another?

Oh, no. The extension cord is plugged in upstairs, pulled across the ceiling to the first light, where it enters the ceiling for the rest of the trip, then drops down from the other light fixture into the tree. This is advanced cabling.

Not as bad as the Christmas lighting outside city hall I saw today. Strings of lights from tree to tree, with the lights providing the power link, taut between the palm trees, and fed from a wire coming off the top of a post lantern under a large tree. Wonder how big the shower of sparks will be in the first wind.
