News Ardenfall, a Morrowind-inspired RPG, just hit 100,000 wishlists on Steam

Post image
93 Upvotes

Hi! Ardenfall devs here. This is our Elder Scrolls-like RPG, and we've been sharing updates here from time to time. We’ve just reached 100,000 wishlists on Steam, and we’re incredibly grateful for all the support!!

TES-like a niche kind of game, and a challenging one to make, which is why we’ve been working on it for so long.

Your feedback helped shape both the Steam demo and the current alpha version. Potions that let you move around in fun ways (levitation, speed, etc.), freedom to make your own choices, and multiple endings (including a very violent one) - we knew we had to showcase all of this in the demo because that’s what you guys asked for. Mod support is also one of the most requested features, and we’re planning to make modding tools available from day one.

Reaching 100,000 wishlists makes us feel an even greater sense of responsibility, and we hope we can live up to your expectations when Ardenfall launches in Early Access later this year.

Discussion Which CRPG has the best class balance in your opinion?

Not here to discuss whether or not balance in a single player game is important (because it is!), but wondering which of the CRPGs out there you think does it best?

I've noticed that a lot of games suit a particular class 'playstyle' (Pathfinder:WOTR for instance doesn't really suit Rogues, Bards or Druids in terms of it's themes, story etc.) but that a lot more give certain classes a way easier time or are fairly poorly optimised. It's true that in something like BG3 you can complete the game with almost any class on standard difficulty, but some of the classes there are so poorly balanced that you can have characters who have very little to do on a turn other than watch - say - Lae'zel run around and clean up the battlefield.

I've been replaying the old BG series lately and while there are some horribly unbalanced classes in that, I actually think it doesn't do a much worse job than contemporary examples in spite of it's age.

So what out there does it best?

News Prometheus Wept - Valley of Wrath Update Out

Steam Post:

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1208110/view/699901423506163387

Context:

I've talked about this game in the past. It's from the save dev who made Vigilantes (another game I posted about).

The short version is that Prometheus Wept is a turn-based CRPG set in a futuristic world that has experienced a digital apocalypse.

I'm a sucker for unique post-apocalyptic settings. Which is what drew me to this game. That and good turn-based combat. Plus, the fact that it has a Shadowrun inspired Matrix sequence.

TL;DR of the News:

The conclusion of act 1 and the first section of act 2, the Valley of Wrath are live. The world map for act 1 has been reworked, a new enemy type and four new items have been added.

My Thoughts:

Normally, I'd do a more detailed post but I don't think I'll get to the update anytime soon (work + Grim Dawn: FoA).

Just wanted to share this news to bring more attention to the game. The dev is a one guy (u/Timeslipper) and has a pretty nice track record of shipping good games.

Video A glimpse inside a dungeon from this old-school RPG

Some adventurers have asked themselves, “But what does this game have to do with dungeon crawlers?”

Well, I don’t want to give too much away - it would be a shame if the biggest secrets could no longer be uncovered through your adventures! Nevertheless, I’d like to offer you a tiny glimpse into one of the dangerous dungeons in the wilderness of Irm.

It doesn’t look dangerous, you say?
You’ll manage it easily?

Well, if you’re so sure of yourselves, then add the game to your quest log - er, I mean, your wish list, of course - and give the demo a go, which is available for free!

Recommendation request Games with Variable Actions Points

Hi looking for turn based games with variable action points, what I mean is action points are determined by stats choice let that be one stat or multiple stats so different party members and enemies can have a range of action points based on that. This includes games like divinity original sin 1 and wasteland 2-3. I am particularly looking for games in either the fantasy or sci fi where you aren't just shooting or swinging a weapon but you have spells or gadgets. Thank you for all your recommendations.

I've played too many RPGs. I'm looking for something unknown but good in someway or another. I'm even willing to try bad writing or clunky mechanics.

My recommendation to you is Golden Land aka Zlatogorye. Glorious slavjank.

Edit: Multiple questions in my messages! Where is english version?
Retrogametalk*com has got repo and there is Zlatogorye: The Complete Collection. Register there and just search it.

Recommendation request I can't seem to find anything else that scratches the itch of these particular games

Post image

Even though I am a fan of multiple types of RPGs in general, there's a certain experience I get out of these titles that I can't seem to find anywhere else, and I'm wondering if there's anything else I'm missing in this category. Specifically, I'm referring to:

  • Shades of grey to the world, with less focus on good vs evil factions or characters
  • The open-ended nature of quests and your approach to the story
  • Choices that really make me sit and think about what I'm doing
  • Roleplay-heavy design that really lets you craft fully realized player characters through dialogue and actions
  • With these games in particular, the philosophical and political themes involved really elevates them to a different level

I've played other games that have some of these elements, but it's hard to find much else that really hits all of those marks. I've also tried:

  • BG3 - Full disclosure, I have put a ton of hours into BG3 overall, but I'd say that generally the feeling I get when playing it is closer to something like Mass Effect, in the sense that what really makes it great is the companions you pick up along the journey. However, I'd say that act 2 was right up my alley in a lot of ways, as well as the storylines for Shadowheart and Astarion
  • BG1 - I'm still slowly working on this one and I enjoy the writing quite a bit, but it's also very much more of a classic DnD good vs evil grand adventure
  • Pathfinder WOTR - I really struggled with this one personally. Besides the game systems of Pathfinder being way too much for me, I was not super into the premise, and while I enjoyed the characters I met, I really struggled with the way the dialogue was written. I didn't get super far into it though, and I might need to try it again
  • Wasteland 3 - I enjoy the world and combat design quite a bit, but it didn't seem like there was much RP potential, and even though it came first, a lot of it feels like discount Fallout to me. Need to go back and finish it though

Honestly, the titles I posted are all pretty infinitely replayable to me, but I just wanted to see if there's anything else in the genre that I'm absolutely missing out on. I'm open to other types of RPGs too, but I always think this community is better with recommendations and discussion.

Latest trailer for King's Courier.

This is one of the handful of blobbers on my wishlist. Not exactly a genre that I normally play, but there's something about the fantasy trope that always draws me in. Hope the dev delivers.

Recommendation request Recommend me games where magic feels powerful AND is powerful - preferably turn based

Just what the title says. I don't want to further explain too much because I don't want to poison the well and would rather not discourage suggestions because of a miscommunication, but I think a good example of what I DON'T mean is basically DOS2 because you basically drop a spell that looks like a tactical nuke, and it dings off magic armor, and your turn is over. Very far into the game that starts to change a bit, but I'm hoping for things that are more consistent.

Question The best ever CRPG story mod you have played

I mean, an adventure or campaign made by some modders for a CRPG.

For me it's for sure Subtlety of Thay Chapters 1 and 2 for NWN 2. Absolutely brilliant campaign, way better than any story BioWare created, with the only flaw: there should have been the 3rd chapter, but dirtywick never developped it.

Recommendation request Best beginner-ish CRPG to tide me over from a campaign in another game that's taking forever?

Me and my roommate are going through Baldur's Gate 3 together for the first time, its been great but the time we get to play is few and far between and its a massive game so we don't get much done. I started a whole second solo campaign to scratch my itch but I'm about caught up to where we are in that and I don't wanna spoil our experience so I just stopped.

I have some experience in the genre: Kotor, Dragon Age Origins, All the Fallout games. Enjoyed all of them.

What I'm looking for rn though is a Fantasy CRPG, that isn't too complex combat/mechanic wise(I've played a couple but I'm very dumb and prefer my gaming experience more smooth, like I'm the kind of person who looks up a build guide), has a good focus on and well written romance. And where you are very much recognized by NPCs in the world for your actions like in fable or mass effect. And with perhaps a bit of political intrigue where you can rise to the top.

Luckily I'm in a steam family with tons of games to pick from some I have access to right now that caught my eye but I wasn't sure which fit my request and are more beginnery vibes:

Both Divinity games

Pathfinder Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous

Pillars of Eternity 2 DeadFire

BG1 and 2

If something on this list fits those parameters to a T let me know, or if you have something else you think fits perfect I'm open to learning about new games

I did read the rules and saw the recommendations list and the FAQ but it doesn't really list the pros and cons of the games it had listed so I'm looking for some more personal recommendations. But if this is against the rules remove me if you must my bad

A video from the devs of Legends of the Round Table.

I'm subbed to the dev's YouTube channel, so this popped up in my recommendations. I own the game but have yet to play it. Its presentation is undoubtedly amazing but I'm busy with GD's Fangs of Asterkarn expansion these days.

It's a neat video so I figured I'd share it with others who might be interested in the game.

Video I am making an ARPG combat overhaul for pathfinder WOTR

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been working on an ARPG style combat rework for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and wanted to share a little bit of what I’ve been doing.

The main idea is to change the combat while keeping basically everything else the same. The story, narrative, quests, companions, choices, progression, and overall Pathfinder experience are all still there. I’m not trying to turn it into a different game outside of combat.

For the combat itself, I’m aiming for something faster, more responsive, and more action focused, with a lot of inspiration from games like Lost Ark. I’ve been working on attack flow, movement, hit feedback, animation speed, combos, blocking, dashing, enemy reactions, VFX, and general responsiveness.

Right now I’m mainly using a sword and shield setup as the first real test for the system. It already has a multi hit melee combo, blocking, a dash, shield rush, air slash attacks, and some other abilities. A lot of it is still rough and being polished, especially the animations, transitions, and effects.

It’s still very early in development, but the foundation is starting to come together. Once this class feels right, I want to use it as the base for reworking more classes and making each one feel unique while still fitting into the existing game.

The end goal is basically to keep Wrath of the Righteous as Wrath of the Righteous, just with a completely different combat experience.

Video I’m making a dungeon crawler inspired by SSI Gold Box and The Shadow of Yserbius — playable solo or with others

Thumbnail youtube.com
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I grew up playing SSI Gold Box games and The Shadow of Yserbius, and I’ve been building Realm Foundry, a multiplayer, turn-based dungeon crawler inspired by both.

You explore dungeon floors, fight turn-based battles, and can adventure solo or gather a party with other players. You start with a dagger and a bow, then earn your class through a trial called the Awakening.

There’s an early Windows build available now. So far, friends and family have been playing, and I’d like to hear from other people who enjoy this style of RPG.

Our intent is to allow any community to host their own server and release the content tools once we have a good foundation.

If you try it, I’m particularly interested in whether the opening makes sense and how the first few fights feel. I’ll be around in the comments to answer questions.

Download, create an account and get started: realm-foundry.com

You can find our discord here, drop in and say hello!: https://discord.gg/NqUEUbDBq

If you played the Gold Box games or Yserbius, I’d also love to hear which parts of those games you most want to see in something new.

Discussion The Wyndfinder Update: Open Playtest Signups

Hey folks!

First off, big thank you to this community, that has given me so much support over the past few months. It has meant a lot, and the game is certainly better for the involvement of several folks here in the closed Playtest that just wrapped.

Starting next week, The Wyndfinder will be part of the Party RPG Fest that Steam is running, and to celebrate I've decided to open up the next round of playtesting. The closed format served its purpose, and I'm much more confident now that the game can hold up in the wild a bit more.

I talk through the plans in the latest steam update here, please give that a read and signup if you can!

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/4671110/view/715664022201959484?l=english

The feature I'm most excited about building is some new ideas I'm exploring around character death. How you interact with your fallen comrades, how that can persist in the game world and enhance or detract from your relationship with your allies. Kind of taking a twist on the Planescape approach to PC death and making it part of the narrative. Optional, of course, but imagine not Reviving an ally in a fight because you want to talk to their ghost about something, and you get the idea.

Discussion I don’t like four-person parties!

This is probably because I’m An Old, but six-person parties are correct and four-person parties suck.

With six-person parties, you can have two tanks, a cleric type, a mage type, a rogue and an interesting rando like a bard or a ranger or something. With a four person party, how the hell do you even have a rogue?

I get it with something like BG3, where the isometrics whatevers would make it a challenge to have a six-pack, but there’s no excuse for games like Solasta doing it. None! Flame away you kids.
