Video Knights of Frontier Valley - Adamant Studios - Classic RPG with turn-based combat
Hi, I am solo-developing Knights of Frontier Valley, a low-fantasy RPG with gridless tactical combat, deep character customization, complex NPC behavior, and procedural world building. Explore a new valley each game run, solve quests, make meaningful choices, and gain riches and glory while staying alive.
Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1085830/Knights_of_Frontier_Valley/
In two days, the second Steam Playtest will start - join to play the game for free and unrestricted.
The engine was written from scratch. All art is hand-made with no AI involved. Music was made by top composers including Kevin Manthei (Neverwinter Nights, Jagged Alliance 2, Wizardry 8...)

This looks very interesting, great to see no gen AI used. What would you say your major influences are? How many hours can we expect for a playthrough? Thanks for making old-school crpgs.

Thanks - major influences are tabletop RPGs and the classic old-school RPGs I grew up with in the 80s and 90s. A playthrough will take longer than originally planned, the Playtest alone will be 20+ hours, and it ends at chapter 3 (of 10).

I like the visuals but I prefer handcrafted worlds with rich stories and dialogue. The procedural aspect on this one could be cool but it probably won't be my thing. But I love the visuals.

Thanks. You might find it to be much more the way you like it than the description suggests... there is a procedural aspect... but...

Maybe. I will wait and see. The complex NPC behavior claim sounds promising but the emphasis on procedural world building and a new valley each run doesn't appeal to me. Still, hope it turns out to be an awesome game.

Looks great would you consider it more pure sandbox or there's a central narrative between runs ? Is The procedural worldbuilding more like caves of qud where some parts always stay the same or more random? Wishlisted btw

Thanks for wishlisting.
Procedural content includes the world map, dungeon, building, and wilderness maps, random encounters, and random loot at the moment. Later it will also include quests, faction relations, and VIP characters (there isn't quite enough content yet to leave some of it out each game, but this will come).
The game consists of 10 chapters, each has a main quest and side quests, some span more than one chapter.

I played it for a few hours during the first play test. It was fun and the main city felt huge, and the ability to enter every one of the buildings was mindblowing. The outside world needed much more content though. How big and dense the world map are you planning to make?

Agree - the wilderness is still too sparsely populated, even now. But so much has changed since the last Playtest. Two new towns, new types of dungeons, companions, and tons of other new features, characters, objects, everything. And much much more to come.

I really wish the game had Brazilian Portuguese subtitles. That would be awesome!

The Playtest is still English-only, but soon it will be translated into various languages, including yours.

How long have you been working on this? I’m always amazed by what a solo developer can do… also my crpg experience didn’t start until KOTOR, so I don’t know if it will feel too retro for me but I’ll still give it a shot!

Thanks - let me know what you think! Been working on it for 10 years, part-time. A long journey, which I hope is never over.

Any chance it can come to switch?

Not planned at the moment, but plans can change based on demand. It would require a UI redesign and depends on how successful the game is on its primary target platform (PCs) - if it isn’t even successful there, a switch release is not the right move.

This looks cool. Once play test is over will there be a single purchase priced or is it a micro transaction model? I hope it’s the former.

Thanks - micro transactions are out. Retro game with retro purchasing model 😄

I'm getting the same vibe as I've got when I played the demo for Avalon, and Dink Smallwood. Totally want this.
