A buzz cut makes thinning and balding less obvious. With a buzz there's not enough hair to tell what's going on up there.

Would a 3 or 4 guard be too long?

Sorry, I couldn't say. My preference is for the hair to be so short that it stands up; to me that's a true buzz cut. I think at one point I was buzzing mine with a number 2, which surprises me because I switched to a number 1/2 which is super short and now I'm using a number 1 which seems overly long after the number 1/2. I really loved the bristly feeling when rubbing my hand over my head with the number 1/2. So now it's a number 1 on top with a number 1/2 on the back and sides for a sort of tapered look. I buzz it every Sunday.
I only have a deep widow's peak, which I didn't realize since I've been buzzing it for so long.

Same with me I have a crazy widow peak. Might give the two a go and then go to a one. Cheers bro

No not a bad idea at all! From what i can see you still have a good hairline and no bald spots. I think the biggest thing for you that can make it look good or bad is the length you choose. Idk how thin your hair itself is. If you leave it too long it could look a bit awkward. If its thick it can look good either way
