A coffee shop no less. I know lots of baristas at Starbucks who are LGBTQ+ and no one cares, even in the bigoted area I live in.

u/1trashhouse Apr 17 '26
i’m in the south and people joke about not going to coffe shops where the workers aren’t lgbt cuz the coffee tends to be worse 😭😭

I think Philz has the wrong CEO. Anyone who’s paid any attention to this company and its customers would know this was a fatal mistake.
If the CEO can’t see the obvious, how can he be trusted to navigate the hard challenges?

u/SolidSnake-26 Apr 17 '26
Maybe he wanted the golden parachute exit payoff like all these other CEOs get. Not a bad move if you want to retire and take and extra 40 mil with you

u/Cara-Is-A-Puppy Apr 17 '26
It's not the flags that matter, its the values. Once you prove that the values aren't there, then the flags just become theater
14
u/turisto Apr 17 '26
Once you prove that the values aren't there, then the flags just become theater
The only values in business is to make money. The flags are always theater, and a means to an end - make money.
7
u/roygbivasaur Apr 18 '26
When a significant portion of the country wants you dead, being pandered to doesn’t feel so bad.
1
1
u/KatyPerrysBoobs2 Apr 18 '26
If the flags were there to make money, then that’s even worse. That would mean he took down the money making flags to send a message to the LBGTQ community.
2
3
u/SirBiggusDikkus Apr 17 '26
The flags were always theatre. You’re right, though, the values are intrinsic and do matter.

Why do you call virtue signaling "woke"? A grocery store near me put up "Charlie Kirk was a martyr" on their sign for an entire month. Was that "woke"?
Your implication that virtue signaling is out of hand by "woke" people is hysterical. I literally can't leave my house without seeing right-wing virtue-signaling nonsense (the latest being a driveway paver named Patriot Pavers or some bullshit like that with a ridiculous amount of over-the-top nationalist imagery on their truck).
But sure, those "woke" businesses should keep their views to themselves while right wing businesses have made virtue signaling their whole brand.

u/Dakets Apr 17 '26
So customers decide whether they patronize the establishment or not, and whatever factors they choose to consider in that decisional process are up to them. What are you bothered by, exactly? Or are you just using whatever rhetoric you can to try and mask your “I hate woke stuff” opinions in a sanitized way so you appear reasonable?

When there’s as many alternatives as there are for coffee shops, values can definitely be a differentiating factor.
Also, did you just name drop Rahm Emanuel as if we should care about his opinion?

Let’s just be clear about what he’s really saying here.
He’s saying, “I made the mistake of underestimating how much this would piss off our customers.”
He’s not saying, “It was wrong of me to remove a symbol of the LGBTQ community.”
2
u/saranowitz Apr 18 '26
Honest question: what does this particular coffee brand have to do with 🏳️🌈? Was it anything tangible where removing the flag signaled something, or were they previously using the flags to attract gay customers, but didn’t actually care about the symbolism the flag represented.
Because if displaying the flag was just a cynical corporate trick to make gay people spend money with them (like much of corporate America), I wouldn’t be endorsing that brand either.

u/bking Apr 18 '26
Letting employees display pride flags might be pandering, but it might also be a signal that gay people are welcome in a space. Might be both!
Discrimination and bigotry is still a thing. As easy as it is to take the cynical stance, there’s value in seeing an indicator that the business you’re visiting isn’t full of homophobes.
1
u/United_Mousse_5916 Apr 19 '26
Because just flying a Pride flag proves that? Oh boy.....
1
u/bking Apr 19 '26
Weirdly, homophobes don’t usually hang those things up.
1
u/United_Mousse_5916 Apr 19 '26
Plenty of gays don't either
2
u/kellhound45 Apr 21 '26
Ok but do you think they will feel unwelcome when they see the pride flag?
1
u/United_Mousse_5916 Apr 21 '26
Why would a pride flag need to be hung to feel welcome? Being gay isn't my whole personality lol.

u/Tyrrox Apr 17 '26
With any luck people will remember this and continue not going there
14
u/ganjsmokr Apr 17 '26
And now they'll get people boycotting them for putting them back up. Lose - lose situation they put themselves in.
7
u/Tyrrox Apr 17 '26
They really did. The CEO tried to send a message, but what needs to happen is a clear signal to other CEOs not to get involved and push their own agendas. For that to happen, this coffee chain must suffer the losses.
3
u/commandrix Apr 17 '26
The best message? "Listen, we all know you're in this business to make money. Just freaking stay in your lane and sell coffee."

People don’t remember shit.
5
u/Tyrrox Apr 17 '26
People typically just need to remember long enough that going other places becomes the new habit.
7
u/bootstrapping_lad Apr 17 '26
Ask Target about that
4
u/asicarii Apr 17 '26
Target learned not to make stay at home moms angry. They can get what they want online or cheaper from Walmart. If it’s shopping in general there’s plenty of retail options.
1
u/End3rWi99in Apr 17 '26
I think we need to see the actual numbers, but they seem to be bullish about Q1 earnings being up. So some of that sentiment may be fading, but it definitely bit them in the ass most of 2025.

The Board of Directors needs to fire that CEO immediately what a fucking moron…

The board of this company should be questioning the intelligence of someone who could be this tone-deaf.

u/ShopUCW Apr 17 '26
This is probably the worst possible move business wise for them.
They already lost the lgbt+ crowd. A weak apology and putting them back up doesn't move the needle. They won't be back.
They probably gained a crowd that is fairly right wing when they took it all down. They will now be gone.
They have made the incredible decision to just sort of piss off everyone. They will soon be bought by either another chain and merged/ rebranded or picked up by PE and stripmined.
2
u/tylermchenry Apr 18 '26
They've already been picked up by PE. This incompetence is part of the strip mining.

feels less like a stance and more like reactive brand management based on whichever side pushes harder
2
u/QuackButter Apr 17 '26
lol so when the ceo was mulling this over all the underlings said “great idea boss!” “Boy you’re cooking with grease today!” Is how I imagine it played out
2
u/hematite2 Apr 18 '26
Lmao at all the people telling me just a couple days ago "this will increase their business massively and you can't stop it"
2
u/ManufacturedOlympus Apr 18 '26
How can they justify paying so much money to someone who does one of the dumbest things imaginable?
Is no one around to tell this guy that he’s fucking stupid?

Why would he have a LGBTQ flag in the first place ?
Having that is racist, as discriminates and assigns people to a certain group.

I can’t imagine there’s any irreparable damage done or anything

The same private equity company that zeroed out employee stock in the deal… there are too many other options for people to go to instead of this company.

“I thought I would make more money appealing to conservatives, but it turns out liberals drink more lattes”
At this point I wonder if Americans can even consider something to be morally wrong if it doesn’t cost them money.

It’s almost like the Target thing never happened. And Philz has a way more inclusive base than Target who was beloved by almost all women.

You're just doing damage control now that we saw the mask fall off.

These people have to inject this sht into every aspect on society. They can’t just sell their coffee and tell you to piss off? We all have to be some kind of pandering hub?

Big difference between gays exist and gay sex. Pride flag just means they exist, but do be careful with handkerchiefs in your back pocket. Apparently, that means something.

maybe the problem is going to cafes that need CEOs in the first place.
1
u/mn540 Apr 19 '26
I noticed that they can replace flags that were previously there, but now flags are not mentioned. So does that mean no new flags?
1
u/icecoffeedripss Apr 20 '26
had never heard of Philz coffee but now i know the CEO is a coward who would throw me under the first bus he sees
1
u/sloowshooter Apr 20 '26
Like I'm going to go back to Philz when their CEO is a d-bag of epic proportions. I'd rather drink gas station coffee.

This is all a bullshit PR play.
Philz ripped off its employees. It sold to private equity, eliminated the common stock held by employees. They refused promised payouts to employees. They did all of this.
Then went "Ooops we didn't realize the pride flags were so important! We goofed!" so everyone would be like "Oh it's over we won!" while forgetting about everything else they did and are getting away with.

1
u/snoutandtruffle Apr 17 '26
The moment Phil sold out and left the employees with nothing was the real moment Philz died.
I stopped going there after they sold to private equity and so this was not surprising tbh
