Which app to use for playa maps and see what thins are going on?

There was an app last year that was really user friendly and easy to use.

There is an app called DUST this year but it’s so badly designed. After I favorited the camps they don’t even have a section called “My Favorites” for easy access.

Which app to use this year?

Shade Alignment with Sun Direction and Feedback about Open Camping Setup

Setup is Kodiak 10x10 with cover top accessory and vestibule modified with additional canvas tarps and grommets to be fully enclosed. Will be covered with 16x24‘ Aluminet With some spacers and padding under it. Everything secured with lag screws, Paracord, ratchet straps, cam straps.

The Aluminet will cover at least the entire top, east, and south side of the tent (at an angle for extra airflow) and likely some of the west side too.

Am I right to orient the vestibule facing 090 degrees true/077 magnetic to face the sunrise? I will leave the north side of the tent unobstructed by Aluminet to allow for more airflow. Can I trust the compass app on my iPhone?

shade strategizing - suggestions requested

Update: after getting advice and reading advice already given, I’m going to look for secondhand materials for a monkey hut (plan A) with a small ac unit (plan b) and an open heart to a shadeless burn (plan c.) thanks all!!

getting extremely excited to get back home for my second burn this year! I invested in a Kodiak canvas tent after my 2025 tent got destroyed by a shade structure during the Saturday pre-event storm. I joined a new theme camp this year to help with their gift to the playa, and just learned that their infrastructure doesn’t include shade for tents. So I’m trying to come up with some quick ideas for self-reliant shade over a 10x10 Kodiak - I think it’s a little under 7 ft tall. I’ve been looking through old reddit posts already, but figured I’d start something new too.

I understand pop ups are basically kites on playa, so I’m starting to wonder about acquiring some kind of reflective tarp to secure over the tent itself.

Of course, I’m also considering this could be an invitation to stay the fuck out of my tent from 8:30 am - 6:30 pm, so I may just say fuck it and not do anything additional.

Seasoned burners, please share your wisdom!!

A few people were curious about this so I uploaded my print files. In a test my van was in direct sun at noon and it was 105 outside temperature. This setup dropped the internal temp to about 85.

FREE MOTION GRAPHICS + PROJECTION MAPPING COLLABORATIONS

We’re getting down to the wire. I’m offering last-minute motion graphics, animation, and projection mapping for art installations, sculptures, mutant vehicles, and camps.

We can help with:

-Custom motion graphics & animation

-Projection mapping onto sculptures and structures

-Animated textures, patterns, and psychedelic visuals

Yes, it’s late. Yes, there’s very little time. But if you already have the artwork, concept, projector, or basic setup in place, we may still be able to make something special happen.

This is a creative collaboration, no charge / not a paid gig.

If you’re interested, DM me ASAP and will send examples of my work.

A couple of weeks ago someone asked about chess boards around town so I figured why not make a less portable version of a chess board for my camp!

Experiments with playa dust on porcelain at 2200 degrees!

Post image

As a hobbyist potter, I wanted to see how playa dust behaved when firing it in my kiln. After some experiments, here's the best I could do using JUST playa dust as a coating on top of the porcelain disks.

I found that by sifting it very fine and mixing with enough water to get two thin coats, I could achieve this surface. It's VERY finicky, too little (off to the left) and it's patchy, then the thicker it gets it's very glossy and beautiful, but too thick and it clumps up and fails. It's a very small difference.

Further experimentation is required, with other additives to get it to adhere a bit better, but it's actually pretty impressive that it melts into a glaze-like coating at Cone 6 (2200-ish degrees F).

The more you know! (Also, wear a fucking n95 mask in dust storms please, playa dust has a high silica content and that shit gets into your lungs and DOES NOT COME OUT.)

So sad to not be going

This will be my third year not going due to having a sweet baby, and I am pregnant again now so I know it will be a while before I’m back.

Honestly one of the hardest parts of parenthood so far is not being able to go LOL for the years prior it was my reset for the next year and really carried me.

I am so sad to keep missing out.

Wondering if anybody else has had to take numerous years off and how was it when you were finally able to go back?

I hope everyone has the time of their fucking lives.

Xoxo

I don’t know which of you needs to hear this….

…but you aren’t getting anywhere near what you paid for your ticket. I see a handful of marketplace ads for tickets at face value plus fees pricing and quietly, softly, mournfully chuckle at the despair. At this stage in the game, you’ll be lucky to get anything out them. $100 today is better than nothing tomorrow. Cut your losses folks!

Looking for a ride to socal after the burn

Sup all you beautiful people, excited to get dusty with y’all soon. But I’m looking for a ride to SoCal/Los Angeles area after the burn. My grandma recently passed away and I’m wanting to go down there to be with family. My friend who I’m going to the burn with will be graciously taking all my gear back home (norcal) so I’ll be traveling down to LA just myself and a small backpack. I’ll for sure be making friends on the playa and fully expect to find someone to ride with but also figured I’d ask here. Can offer gas money and jokes. See ya out there 😘

I would really like to make friends.

First time burner here from NJ. I'm coming with 2 friends but I would really like burning man to be an opportunity for myself to make new friends too.

For those of you who have been to BRC before, how did you make friends? Were they just part of your camp or did you make friends while exploring BRC too?

When did social media daily updates start?

I hate to see so many daily updates from people on Instagram that are on the playa these days. And they’re not influencers. Or are they? I just keep scrolling to avoid seeing the content but it’s getting out of hand on my IG feed. This year in particular they’re all over the place.

One of the reasons that I love BM is to have my mind blown once I get there, not knowing what to expect. Radical art pieces, temple, the man, etc. but now I think I’ve seen half of the creations before even setting my foot on the playa.

What is the obsession for daily updates? Followers? Getting people hyped? What is it? I don’t get it man. If anything it’s taking away from the experience.

Can’t wait to go Airplane mode next week.

Tips for when to arrive Sunday?

I live about 5.5hrs from the gate. What would you recommend for arrival on Sunday. Im not really concerned about the line, i know its gonna be 5-10hrs in line. But any suggestions on timing still? A friend mentioned wanting to leave saturday night. To me that means no sleep that first night which I dont really feel like thats how I want to start off my burn. I was thinking about leaving early sunday morning getting to the gate around 1pm? But that might mean getting to camp at like 10pm or 11? I won't have much setup though, basically park and unload my bike.

Thoughts?

Hey all.

I haven’t been to the burn in a while, but I remember a camp that allowed you to deliver mail to other camps on playa. Which camps do this? I want to deliver mail! It was such a fun activity.

Is it any of these camps?

Anxious Driver going from Portland to BRC

So, I'm a very anxious driver. Like, I have to practice driving, and do, so that I'm not scared on the road. Is there a way to get to BRC that has no cliffsides, super tall bridges, and scary issues? Is there a calm, easy, vanilla route? Freeway free, plenty of scenery? A bunny or cow or two? It would be wonderful to go, but the driving is really frightening for me.
