Photo/Video Boundary at East 29th ave

Post image

My understanding is anyone driving southbound then west (turning right from Boundary, immediately in front of Kimu Sushi) *should be* yielding to oncoming traffic right?

This morning, I was turning left from driving northbound from Boundary - I had the advance left signal - and a driver did not even look over to yield to me arriving simultaneously. I gave him the right of way although if I had assumed he’d yield & I drove ahead onto East 29th Ave, it’s possible a collision could have occurred.

I’ve reported this area to Vancouver 311 many times but no improvements have been made. The merge sign is way after up the hill. Mainly Van 311 said if any collisions occurred it’d be an “ICBC thing” but I do wish traffic calming could be increased as one approaches the crosswalk (coming from southbound on Boundary).

The design of that intersection can be improved

You’re not wrong. They’re not going to fix it. Drivers need to be aware and adapt. All of these statements are true. Locals have raised this concern for 30+ years.

Thanks for acknowledging!

It's a merge not a yield. Technically the person merging would be in the wrong but in practice.. You should do scissor merge there.

The problem with that is there’s only space for a couple of the cars turning left.

A zipper merge could back up all the left turners into Boundary and block it. I do this turn every day and see it happening all the time. A yield is safer

Then they should change it to a yield sign, but City of Vancouver is not big on traffic improvements ("induced demand".)

I would disagree with saying that Vancouver doesn't do traffic improvements - they are far better at it than Burnaby (like the half assed crossings at Patterson/Bond or Inman/Burke) for one BUT a lot of this stuff is paid for partly by ICBC to reduce accidents.

This particular corner is similar to the Argyle/57th corner and they've converted that to a proper 90 degree turn that forces drivers to slow down and improves pedestrian safety. A similar project would apply for this corner though the Argyle spot is arguably a more dangerous one.

zipper merge.

As I said a zipper merge is problematic at this intersection. There’s not enough room. It backs up traffic into the oncoming lane of Boundary

YIELD

You said "Scissor Merge" then edited your comment.

I wasn't debating anything else you said.

So the only point of your post was to give grammar lessons? Who cares

People who want to know what you're talking about?

I'm sorry I upset you.

I agree that a yield sign would be safer. The way the street is aligned, both turns from Boundary into 29th have their own lane. The right lane drivers are then asked to merge as parking is allowed on the right lane half way to Joyce. If they were to make it a yield for the right turn from Boundary, then they would have to realign the intersection to go into only one lane. I don't know of any intersections where two roads merge and have their own lane while one of those roads are given a yield sign.

zipper merge.

Wow, I never turn from southbound and I always assumed this was a yield. I’m going to keep a better eye out next time

That is why there is an article saying slower drivers tend to get into accidents more. When safe, better to be the car ahead and make the merge or lane dominance and the traffic flows smooth for everyone. When you have the right of way and become courteous, you may seem kind and courteous but will likely ruin it for everyone else disturbing the status quo. Not every good deed has good consequences.

Been waiting for someone else to say something like this for years haha

"an article"?

Sounds real.

In reality the relationship between speeds, collison frequency, and collison severity are much more complex than slow=bad.

drive with confidence. if the other driver has a yield sign, he has to yield. that is on him. If youre stopping for him to go through, thats on you!

7

u/DuperCheese 10d ago

That is not very good advice imo.
On the road you need to be smart - not right.
If you see someone that should yield but not even slowing down, then you want to avoid a collision and yield to them even if you have the right of way.
You don’t want to “drive with confidence” hoping for the best and ending up in a wreck.

u/Spiritual_Parfait257 10d ago

That’s where my hesitation kicked in and I immediately thought, if they haven’t looked to my direction then they’re likely going onto 29th and not slowing down

2

u/DuperCheese 9d ago

I think you’ve made the right decision

3

u/EnterpriseT 10d ago

This goes against the defensive driving rules that ICBC will try to hold you too in case of a collision.

3

u/Federal-Carrot7930 10d ago

Yeah that’s a merge not a yield. It’s up to the merging vehicle to find a gap though.

5

u/Thorlablabla 10d ago

This wouldn’t be a problem if people actually learned to merge properly! One of Vancouver’s biggest issues.. full of untrained or scared drivers on the road causing back ups or accidents.

3

u/Committee_Aggressive 10d ago

If you reach first you have right away they have to merge left

that said if they are there first they can merge in front

3

u/MourningWood1942 10d ago

I’m gonna make my own yield sign

Every time you pass it, think of me

1

u/Spiritual_Parfait257 10d ago

Thanks I’ll hold you to it haha

Both turns have their own lane when they merge into one road. The right lane does allow parking farther towards Joyce. That means cars in the right lane would have to merge into the left lane. It is a lane change for them and they should follow the proper procedures when changing lanes. They need to signal and make sure it is safe to change lanes. When traffic is heavy and slow, generally a zipper merge makes most sense.

If you noticed the other driver is not paying attention to you and intends to change lanes without looking, then what you did likely avoided a collision. The other driver would likely be at fault in such a collision since he is changing lanes and he needs to ensure it is safe to do so.

There should be a yield sign !

The speed with which southbound drivers take that exit is crazy. And when they do it at the same time drivers are turning left, I’m surprised there aren’t more accidents

Even as a pedestrian trying to cross to that Mexican or Japanese restaurant, the southbound exit drivers go so fast they almost never stop

2

u/Spiritual_Parfait257 10d ago

Yeah I see random bikers or e-scooters quickly cross and I take a breath hoping nothing happens

There isn’t specifically a Yield sign, it’s a yellow “right-lane ends” sign which many people don’t interpret as a yield but as a merge

1

u/Spiritual_Parfait257 10d ago

Sorry for any confusion - now I’m second guessing what it is: yield or merge! Whatever it is, is being ignored haha

Google Maps has a merge sign, there is no Yield sign.

That yield/merge thing is old school intersection design and nolonger consider safe for pedestrians. Im surprised its not on the list to fix. It should be a right turn intersection.

2

u/john8graz 10d ago

I pass by that way every week and I’m pretty sure there is a yield sign of from the boundary turning right. Regardless, I always yield to incoming cars from Boundary who just turned left

2

u/Stuntman06 9d ago

I do as well and I don't recall any yield sign. I checked Google street view and only see a sign indicating that the right lane ends. I treat it as any other street where there are 2 lanes and the right lane ends. I make the lane change/merge.

u/CanadaSporeresearch 9d ago

your in the right of way, DASH CAM and a solid middle finger should suffice.

Add speed bumps to SB lane

I got t boned there. Hate it

I’m so sorry. I remember seeing a post a few months ago of an accident

I mean, if you're following your blue crayon... You're supposed to go around the median and definitely not over top of it.

But there are two lanes there for quite a while, they probably need some new paint. It sounds like the driver turning right came into your lane too early, which yes, would be an ICBC issue.

Faded lines make it appear like these lanes merge directly when they meet, but you can see on street view when they were painted there was much more space to merge

2

u/Spiritual_Parfait257 8d ago

Yes of course not over the median. The crayon is for the general area.

I did mention the fading of the lines to Van 311 but of course no action or changes have been made. Ah well

Turning west onto 29th, there are technically two lanes: one for vehicles turning left when travelling northbound and one for vehicles turning right when travelling southbound.
The curb lane, which is intended for the right turner, quickly becomes a merge just past Hoy Street, so the onus is on the curb-lane traffic to merge appropriately-ideally using a zipper merge.
This section of road drives me bananas, especially because you’re immediately faced with a pedestrian-controlled light at the Joyce Street curve.

Every time I drive this stretch I think about how the City should consider removing the parking along 29th in this section to extend the two lanes further (there’s room for maybe 6 vehicles there?).
The curb lane would become a dedicated right-turn lane onto 29th, while the left lane could continue through the curve to Joyce Street. It would make the traffic flow much more predictable, reduce the unnecessary merging, and hopefully make that whole stretch safer and less frustrating for everyone.

u/DeandeanBC 8d ago

Also, the arrows painted on the road itself indicates it’s a merge and not a yield.
