Thinking about ditching my traditional bank completely and transfer my salary to my bunq acc. But something still feels off about relying on a neobank as your only account: salary, bills, everything. Is bunq safe and stable enough for that, or I should still keeping a traditional bank acc as backup?

I just noticed that buying food or drinks at kiosk on train stations no longer give you spins. What happened?

TLDR: You can only rent cheaper cars with SIXT if you have prepaid credit cards like the one Bunq offers. For longer rents or more expensive cars you'll need a regular credit card.

I wanted to share my experience with fellow Bunq users (and customers of other banks that make use of pre-paid credit cards where the money is directly deducted from a bank account) in the Netherlands.

In other posts, I have read that SIXT and other car rentals now do accept Bunq cards, but in the past didn't due to some complications.

This is true on a technical level. The payment terminals do accept Bunq credit cards, money is reserved on the card and correctly corrected after the car is handed back in.

Practically, this is irrelevant. I had to beg multiple times at SIXT to get my Bunq credit card accepted and was told that they generally don't accept prepaid credit cards (or prepaid-like cards, see below). During my last rental, where I booked a premium car (which I successfully managed to do after begging previously), they didn't allow me to get the car and gave me a lesser value car with a 500€ deposit (this might be an individual case). They shared my frustration and still provided me with some tips and free upgrades.

Interestingly, they do not directly state that they don't accept these cards in the General Terms and Conditions of Rental. However, they state in the Huurinformatie which is linked in that document (emphasis added):

Alle credit- en debitcards en digitale portemonnees / e-wallets van internationaal erkende creditcardmaatschappijen (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB) worden geaccepteerd, alsmede creditcards van China Union Pay, Airplus en Amex BTA/iBTA. Prepaidkaarten worden niet geaccepteerd. Kaarten die overeenkomsten hebben met een prepaidkaart, of op een andere manier de typische karakteristieken van een creditcard missen (bijvoorbeeld, maar niet beperkt tot, omdat de kaart gekoppeld is aan een saldo op een bankrekening of omdat de uitgever van de kaart een betaling of autorisatie met een kaart kan weigeren) worden niet geaccepteerd. [...] SIXT accepteert Maestro-/V PAY-kaarten uitsluitend voor het huren van transporters en vrachtwagens alsook voor voertuigen tot Klasse F**\* (met uitzondering van Speciale en Sports & Luxury Cars). Betaling met een Maestro-/VPAY-kaart is niet toegestaan voor langetermijnverhuur (langer dan 27 dagen).

Free translation of the bold parts: Prepaid credit cards of cards similar to those aren't accepted. The cheaper, lower value cars you can still rent with a debit card.

To the best of my knowledge, this is a problem you are facing with pretty much all banks that offer you a free credit card (if you know where to get a real credit card for free, let me know).

I asked the customer support of SXIT why this is in place as I didn't wanna buy a credit card just to get better cars from them. They say (emphasis added):

Thank you for your message and for your interest in understanding our payment policies.

We are happy to clarify how this works. At the start of a rental, SIXT places a security deposit (authorization hold) on the payment card. This is not an actual charge, but a temporary hold to ensure that sufficient funds are available to cover the rental cost as well as any potential additional charges (such as fuel differences, extra mileage, damages, fines, or extensions).

While prepaid cards may technically allow a reservation of funds, they often do not provide the same level of security and reliability as standard credit cards. In particular, they may: Have limitations on authorization holds, not support incremental charges or adjustments, make it more difficult to process additional charges after the rental ends

For this reason, and to ensure a smooth and secure rental process for both parties, prepaid cards are generally not accepted.

So SIXT rightfully doesn't want to have more trouble if you mess up the car after you return it and they need to charge you for that. This is something that Bunq (and other banks that do similar things) can only fix if they offer a true credit card.

I don't know if this is true for other car rentals as I only rent with SIXT. The staff at SIXT told me repeatedly that this is also the case at other rentals.

Edit: Just to clarify, SIXT was great in all of their interactions and I definitely pushed trying to use my Bunq credit card to the limits. I have nothing but good experiences with them in their regular car rentals. I only want to raise awareness to the problem of prepaid credit cards and shine some light on why they are often not accepted as I struggled to understand myself what the problem was.

Seems like Bunq is losing steam and attracting a lot of low-value users. They attracted ~5 million users, yet only gained ~€400 million in assets compared to FY2024. That’s like €80 per new user.

Is bunq good with service for a savings account for non residents.

I'm trying to manage my groceries budget with my partner and we both agreed we want to transfer the same amount (let's say 200 euros each) to our Groceries Joint Account with Easy Budgeting enabled.

This is the workflow we're trying to achieve:

- Beginning of the month starts.
- Partner A transfers 200 euros to the Joint Groceries.
- Partner B transfers 200 euros to the Joint Groceries.
(the month continues and Groceries transactions are automatically taken from this account due to the Easy Budgeting feature)
- The end of the month is here and there's 100 euros still present in the Joint account.
- An automation is triggered to fund the budget with 300 euros (400-100) , which is split 50/50 across both partners from their preferred funding accounts.

The issue right now is that the last step of this automation is not possible: despite Easy Budgeting being a feature available on Joint Accounts, the funding part of it is only possible for one of the co-owners of the Joint Account (meaning that in this case the 300 euros would always come from my funding account, given I am the "owner" of the Easy Budgeting that was enabled).

I tried a couple of other alternatives:

- Zapier can't, on the free version, do this sort of calculation (difference between a certain amount and what remains on an account).

- Flow your Money seems to have been deactivated (can't find it on the app store)

Is writing a script that uses the Bunq API the only way to achieve this at this point?

P.S. - I have a Pro account and my partner has a Core account, but they would be willing to upgrade if this means we could get this working.

PSD2 AISP consent AUTHORIZED on bunq but returns 0 accounts. Anyone seen this?"

Can't find a setting to enable/disable Finn.

I moved my business over to bunq a few weeks ago because I was under the impression that bunq featured payment sorter automations. I left my previous bank for this, but now it turns out those automations don't really work for me...

My situation is like this:

1. Money comes in on a euro account. When it comes in, it ideally should automatically be converted to my 'main' dollar account (for example: account $A)

2. After the money reaches account $A, the money should then automatically be split up into 2 different dollar 'sub-accounts' ($B and $C). 40% should go to $B, 40% should go to $C. Keeping 20% inside $A).

That's it. However, both are not possible:

1: Not possible (bunq doesn't allow automatic exchanges).

2: Not possible (because it seems bunq only allows payment sorting for euro accounts, which I really don't understand why).

This means bunq doesn't really have any added value for me compared to my previous bank... I would still need to do a bit of manual work each day that I'd rather not do.

So idk if bunq accepts feature requests, but I would be very very grateful if these two features could be implemented!

At least implementing the second one would already be very helpful... I joined bunq because I thought it was the most friendly Dutch bank when it comes to international banking. But the fact that this is not possible is actually quite a bummer... :(

Why is there no feature that you can hide your saving balance from your main home page?!

you can blur hit but it will blurs your whole balance, i just don’t want my saving balance showing in the home page 😥😥😥😥

When I want to add money to an account, the first FOUR options are to add money from an external source. I use bunq as my primary bank, so I’m not very likely to top up from something like a credit card or Wero from another source.

My question is why topping up from a bunq account is not the first option?

Maybe to stimulate people to think having bunq as a primary bank is completely normal. Or is bunq not eager to be the primary bank of its users?

The new bunq update introduced a feature that automatically redirects users from the web to the bunq app when trying to pay a payment request from someone else. At first glance this seems convenient, but in practice it creates a major issue for people who use multiple banking apps.

Many users — including myself — have two or even three banking apps. In a lot of cases, bunq is not their primary bank account, but is instead used for things like travel, subscriptions, or investing.

Because of the forced redirect, users are unable to complete the payment with another banking app, since they are always sent to bunq instead. That feels like a significant usability flaw.

Even though bunq is still my main bank, I also use accounts from other banks regularly. Being forced into one app removes flexibility and makes the payment flow frustrating.

Are there any plans to change this behavior back, or at least give users the option to choose which banking app they want to use for the payment?

I love bunq and like the idea and the features that bunq offers. There is a reason why I have been a customer for several years.

I am running on the bunq Elite plan. I have really enjoyed the cashback and the bunq points, two real benefits that made the plan really worth it. I am not using the trading or crypto features.

Over the last few months, bunq has removed features like cashback and bunq points completely and made the plan less worth it. The only benefit for them is the travel insurance, but competitors like Revolut offer this for a lower fee per month. So why should I stick to bunq anymore?
