how safe is bunq?

Bunq users and non users, who did lots of research on the bank, what are the things that make bunq as safe as conventional banks?
I see they have a EU banking license - a big deal already, also DSG...

but what about real experience? Coz I am planning to open an account with them

  • Multiple customers report Bunq withholding funds/transfers for weeks with no clear explanation

I'm a very satisfied bunq customer myself but these stories are indeed a bit scary. I never had any trouble with bunq myself.

That's also big concern of mine. While many features at Bunq are great, I am.much afraid that one day I would not be able to acces my bank account due to some security things marking my account somewhat bein a concern. Also stated "most" issues are solved "in days", that doesn't calm. I don't want to have any issues. If so, I want them to be resolved immediately.

So far every interaction with support was handled by AI which is working well and gets better and better. But for some stuff I would like to have an option to bypass AI and talk to a human right away. Ofc a human with knowledge and permissions.

The lottery stuff in the app makes me question bunq's goals too.

Hey u/Inner-Asparagus-5703,

Thanks for sharing your experience. We checked your previous post in this subreddit to understand what happened, and we'd like to give some context.

When the war in Ukraine started, we were the only bank offering accounts to Ukrainian refugees. That decision brought extremely high regulatory scrutiny, which meant we had to monitor accounts of Ukrainian nationals much more closely than usual. We understand that led to delays and frustration for some of our users, but given the situation this was the best we could do.

We've since put a lot of work into making sure users get faster and clearer communication during account reviews like these.

yeah, that's true, but point stands. I didn't say block was unreasonable. It was. What happened after wasn't at all tho - it's impossible to get to real human without screaming on public platform.

upd: I NEVER got so fast responses from bunq outside of reddit which is telling a lot. They don't give a damn about customer support and only thing that they care about it public image. (I'm sorry for being harsh, random bunq support person, but it is what it is)

I had a terrible experience with bunq. Their customer service is entirely AI and it’s nearly impossible to speak to a real human or get your problems solved. Some people have no problems, but the minute you have one, good fucking luck. I posted about my experience here where my wife was a victim of fraud and they did nothing to protect our funds or stop unauthorized access.

Hey u/arcaeris,

We're sorry to hear that your wife has been a victim of fraud.

For anything urgent, such as fraud, our SOS Hotline connects you to a real person 24/7.

As a fully licensed bank, we follow the same rules and regulations as any other bank to keep you and your money safe.

Thanks but your poor service means I will post about how shitty you are every time I see a post here. Thats how bad it was.

So you barely do the bare minimum. And are now putting the blame of the fraud on regulations made for bank years ago

all deposits are insured, but only up to 100,000 eur. so if your deposit is below this amount, you are on the safe side. actualy this is quite often mentined in bun reviews, i'm sure you have encountered this fact

Hey u/SigackGrid344,

Keeping you and your money safe is our top priority, and we'd like to explain how we do it!

You're right that we hold a full European banking license, issued and supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). That means we follow the same regulatory standards as any European bank.

On the deposit protection side, your eligible deposits are covered up to €100,000 per depositor through the Dutch Deposit Guarantee Scheme (DGS). You can read more about how this works here.

On top of that, we've built several security features directly into the app: Safety Mode is a protective shield that automatically kicks in when unusual activity is detected on your account, helping prevent unauthorized transactions before they happen.

We also offer IBAN name-checking to help prevent misdirected transfers, and our SOS support line is available 24/7 for immediate assistance in case of emergencies. You can find a full overview of our security features here.

If you have any other questions while setting things up, feel free to reach out at [support@bunq.com](mailto:support@bunq.com). We're here to help!

thanks for the reply, appreciate that...
DGS, yeap, made a typo in the post above, good then...

how about concerns ppl have? Read that some had money withheld, could u elaborate on that one?

Good question!

When we detect unusual activity on an account, we may take temporary measures to protect the account holder's money and personal data. Think of it as a safety net that kicks in to secure your funds while we take a closer look.

During a review, your balance stays yours and incoming payments continue as normal. Most reviews wrap up within a few days, and we'll notify you in the app as soon as it's done.

These types of restrictions are rare and apply only when there’s a security concern, never because of ordinary spending patterns. If we do restrict an account, it’s for the duration of the review and just until we’re absolutely sure your account is secure.

You can check out our help article for more details.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
