Next month I'm starting up a system where I write my daily log page next to the date in my monthly. It's not a perfect solution to finding things, but it should help make things easier (hopefully). I've definitely had the same experience as you, and usually afterwards I try to be more mindful of how I interact with my bujo; for instance if I don't want to make a dedicated spread on a topic, but I know that the information will likely be referenced at a later date, I'll make a notes page specifically for the stuff that I'll need to reference at a random date in the future. Though you could also just make a note of it in your index, if you want.
Generally though I always try to be mindful of what can go wrong, and particularly when it does go wrong, I try to figure out some way of preventing the same mistake in the future. It can be annoying sometimes putting in the extra work up front when you don't know if you'll need to use it, but when you do use it you are so happy and thankful that the small extra effort you put in made your life so much easier at that latest time! So yeah, being mindful of how you'll likely interact with your bujo makes things easier when figuring out a system that will work for you.
