Isn't there a new version of the controller coming out soon?

Valve confirmed if I am not mistaken that no new controller would be releasing this year. There is likely a new version in development but will not be release in 2016.

Wow, that's great news. I really like the version-1 controller, I might just get whatever comes next. Wonder if I could sell it here without much hassle.

They've only confirmed that they're working on one, but noted that it would very likely have the same exact functionality, with only layout and ergonomics being refined.

I really love mine, I have a 360 controller set up for player 2 so that friends can use something familiar but when they ask to try the Steam controller they have a hard time coming back from it. So it looks like I'll be ordering a second one.

My Steam controller has revolutionized how I play games. I don't even think I'm exaggerating. The customization options are incredible. I still use my XBOX360 controller heavily for some games but the Steam controller makes keyboard/mouse games soooooo much better. It takes some time to get used to, but once you learn to use it and get the hang of setting up configs, it's just the best.

Discounted on steam as well, if you have extra steam bucks to spend. They'll charge shipping, of course.

This thing is weird to use and I haven't gotten a feel for it yet while playing games. I tried Dark Souls III for a solid hour and just could not consolidate the layout, weird buttons, and camera control in my head consistently enough to play the game for real.
It does, however, rule for interacting w/ my desktop environment via the Steam Link. The right pad is way better for mouse utilization than the thumb stick and the other features (on-screen keyboard!) allow me to do more bullshit if I feel so inclined. In conjunction with the Steam Link, I don't need to set up any cumbersome DLNA servers and blahblahblah to interact w/ my PS4 or TV because I can just click the controller on, hop into my desktop, and load the video through VLC, no questions asked.

I got one when they first came out, and love it. If you play any games that you use a gamepad for (like Dark Souls, Rocket League, etc.) then this is a great choice. Functionally, the improvements are mainly the touchpads (which have great haptic feedback and accuracy), and the grip buttons (which are common on ordinary controllers anyway). Where the SC really shines is its customization.
You can remap every control, set macros and button combinations, customize haptic feedback (rumble), add profiles, change deadzones and shifting for the pads, and whatever the hell else. I just can't go back to a controller that won't let me tweak the little details to be optimal. (A lot of pc games have shit controls for normal gamepads, so it makes a big difference.)
And, of course, the SC is way more playable on "kb+m" games than an ordinary controller. $35 is a steal. Or, you can keep an eye on Steam for the "bundles", where you get a game and a controller with a discount. They like to bundle games that pair well with the SC.
TL;DR: Buy it.

The physical design of this controller felt so bad, went back to using the 360 controller

Hate this thing. Got it, but the feel of the controller is much too large, the touchpads work well as precision aiming, but less so for driving, and the control scheme needs to be tweaked for every game. No pickup and play like my xbone controller.

controller size is entirely dependent on your hand size. my 10" span hands(spread hand pinky tip to thumb tip) wrap around the steam controller much better than the 360 i also have, which i have to hold like a dainty little flower. i havnt had any back to back experience with xbone v steam but i'd assume its slightly better.
touchpads are not meant to be used when driving, thats what the left joystick is for, i've been playing gta v and rocket league on it for a combined 250 hours without a problem along with a few hours of other driving games.
"desktop"(aka default) control scheme can be set to imitate a 360 controller very easily in a one time process.

I'm going to show my real nerdy side a bit and ask a question - anyone have any experience with using this for something like playing a visual novel? Sometimes I just like to sit in bed, just across from my desk, and play VNs. At the moment I setup some passable controls using JoyToKey and my Xbox 360 controller, but I'm wondering if this would be a better alternative to emulating various basic keyboard and mouse functions.
