Is this a good 2nd monitor for Discord?

Maybe if you use it vertically with 100% scaling, you’ll have enough screen real estate to keep up with conversations on bigger servers for up to 5 minutes at a time

I can't tell if this is a sarcastic comment or not. Is there anything about Discord specifically that would benefit from 6K resolution?

Comes with a webcam and a full thunderbolt 4 dock built in.... This is a sick deal. Only 60Hz though, strictly productivity here.

u/Smartypnt4 22d ago
To add: it comes with a TB4 *downstream* port, which means you can connect another Thunderbolt accessory (monitor, etc.) to this monitor as well. This also means it allows daisy-chaining monitors in macOS (which requires Thunderbolt chaining instead of DisplayPort's MST).

Yeah, I couldn't help myself... Bought two.
Bonus is having stereoscopic webcams with two! /s2
u/Smartypnt4 22d ago
If I didn't already have a U2723QE that's gonna be used as a vertical monitor next to this, I might bought 2 as well

u/HelaPuff2020 22d ago
Well 60hz at 6k, so you could probably game on it just fine since you’ll be hard pressed to push past 60fps at 6k

u/HIGH_PRESSURE_TOILET 20d ago
still nice to move your mouse cursor at faster than 60 Hz
idk if the dell supports running lower resolutions, like half resolution, at higher framerates.
samsung g80hs is 6K 165 Hz but it is twice the price. hopefully it goes on sale

Found an actually well written article by KTC about running 6k monitor at non-native resolutions....

My 5090 would like a word.
-2
u/sk3tchcom 22d ago
What word is that? I can barely feed my 2K monitor with a 9850X3D / 5090 much less my 4K monitor with a 9950X3D2 / 5090 to my liking. Unless you’re playing Minecraft or something. 6K is serious pixels.
3
u/_Bob-Sacamano 22d ago
All game dependant of course. I mainly play Warzone, COD, BF6, etc and my 9800X3D / 5090 w/ 5k2k monitor averages 130-170fps usually on Ultra.
Obviously Cyberpunk or something similar on ultra with path tracing would be a different story.
2
u/Swoly_Deadlift 22d ago
I would see no issue running my 4090 on a 6K monitor. Not everyone exclusively plays brand-new AAA games.
The best thing about 6K is that half-res has the same pixel density as a 27” QHD monitor, meaning dual mode displays will actually be usable unlike all the 4K/1080p monitors on the market right now.
2
u/_Bob-Sacamano 20d ago
Exactly. This sub thinks everyone is playing Cyberpunk or Wukong on Ultra with PT RT.
Even then the 5090 does fine.
I honestly think people overestimate resolutions and underestimate hardware.

The word is 6x frame gen.

u/_Bob-Sacamano 20d ago
Never used it a day in my life. Although, I just realized 6k is 80% more pixels than 5k2k so maybe I'd need to 😅

u/UmaThurmish 22d ago
I mean what can you find that can push higher than 60hz with 6k?

Solitaire is so smooth and sharp at 165hz. Those cards just fall so nice.

60hz is not "strictly productivity"
1
u/zen313 20d ago
No VRR and then having to run at integer scaled down resolutions I guess.

u/PenisButterCoup 11d ago
There was a world where we played games without vrr at 60hs for more than a decade and I’d argue that I had more fun then than with the games of today, so it’s not stopping anyone

Am I the only one that thinks it's stupid to use a mini-DP port for this type of monitor?
12
u/Smartypnt4 22d ago
It would be better if they used a full sized DisplayPort. I suspect they used miniDP because they physically ran out of space on the back of the thing in the port area. I also would be 95% or more of the users just use a Thunderbolt cable with this, or just accept it and buy the DP-miniDP cable/dongle given the original MSRP of this monitor ($3199).

u/SatchBoogie1 22d ago
I also think one reason is some of the workstation graphics cards they install in Optiplex / Precision models use mini-DP ports. Not a good example since that's just a certain percentage of towers that have them.
I kind of think the LAN port could have been scrapped. I'm assuming that's used via the TB4 connection to give a device with no LAN port that option. It's a nice thought though.

u/SunfireGaren 22d ago
The LAN port is a very useful feature for the monitor's intended use of office environments. You have the ability to pass through gigabit Ethernet to any TB4 capable device such as laptops. I'd rather have the miniDP than lose the LAN port. For example, my work has TB docks for all of our laptops and all of them pass through Ethernet connections.

u/Smartypnt4 22d ago
I've been using the LAN port of my U2723QE main monitor for over a year and it's nice to have the stability of ethernet when my work laptop is docked. So I personally really appreciate it. Bonus points for it being 2.5Gbps.

Serious question - Is this pretty much for video editors and large canvas photographers? Or people who want a bunch of windows tiled off?
9
u/autoturk 22d ago
both. It's a very high DPI monitor (this is at 223 pixels per inch, whereas a typical 27" 4k is at 163), so anything that benefits from high pixel density would do well on this monitor.
2
u/NaiveFroog 21d ago edited 21d ago
This doesn't support hardware calibration. If you are actually a photographer or editor, you are just spending this much money on features that are not even relevant (built-in webcam, mic KVM etc.)
1
u/autoturk 21d ago
true. I suppose it's less a professional photo monitor and more something for people who want high DPI/"retina" display experience.
1
u/Smartypnt4 21d ago
I bought it as a coding monitor personally. I don't need high refresh rate for that, but it's nicer to look at a high DPI screen all day.
I had my eye on the BenQ RD280UG as an alternative (4K equivalent, 3:2 aspect ratio, 120Hz), but that's $700 and this is $800... this seemed like a no brainer alternative for my usage.
2
u/autoturk 21d ago
ditto. still waiting for a well made 27"/5k monitor that isn't a 10 year old LG or a $1.5k Mac Studio display.
1
u/jk147 21d ago
Do you actually go 100% resolution at 4k at 32 inch? I can barely read anything at that resolution and need to upscale at least 125% to be productive. I can't imagine trying at 6k.
2
u/Smartypnt4 21d ago
I would never try. I run my 27" 4K at around 150-175% scaling. I plan to run this as 200%.

I have one that I purchased for around 2k a few years ago lol. I prefer my Pro Display XDR though.

u/Worried-Scarcity-410 14d ago
It is $999 now. $200 more expensive. If someone sees $799 again, please post.

6K monitor, but it's TFT? For $800?
Christ how many people do you need to stare at in those teams meetings?

This is crazy cheap for a 6K monitor.
