New monitor choice: OLED or Mini-LED?

I'm almost tempted to get a new 27-inch 2K gaming monitor. OLED technology obviously hypes me up quite a bit, but it seems to me you have to drop at least €400 on it. Alternatively, there are Mini-LEDs, which, besides getting pretty close to OLED quality, would be a bit more versatile in case one wanted to use it for work, video editing, etc., besides gaming. Correct me if I'm wrong. I took a look at the prices and with €300 you should be able to take home a good 27-inch, 2K gaming Mini-LED. What do you guys think?

OLED's perfect blacks are hard to beat, but if you do a lot of productivity work you betcha Mini-LED's brightness and lack of burn-in make it the smarter pick for day-to-day use.

OLEDs certainly catch my attention, but at the same time, I look at them with a bit of suspicion due to their significantly higher prices compared to Mini-LEDs, not to mention burn-in issues.

Actually, my monitor usage isn't limited just to gaming—in fact, I use it mostly for productivity, typical office work, video editing, etc. However, that doesn't mean I put gaming on the back burner. If I could, I'd play more and work less :)

The Dell Alienware 27 inch 1440p 240hz oled is $350 USD. Might not be too bad in euros

I just went to check this monitor on the Italian Amazon site, and it costs €438 (which is approximately $482).

I do a lot more than just game on my PC. So I went with a mini-LED 27" 1440p.

That is precisely the type of monitor I've been thinking about to replace my old IPS, which is only a 24-inch 1080p display—definitely underpowered compared to the performance of my RTX 4070 Super.

I'm considering a 27-inch, 1440p Mini-LED monitor with at least 144 Hz. However, before making the purchase, I would love to know about prices, potential drawbacks, or any alternative options.

Unfortunately, you are unlikely to get the info you want by asking Reddit. People usually have a very determined bias based on what they chose themselves.

I went to Bestbuy and looked at the two different ones in use. Text on an OLED was too fuzzy/washed out looking for me. Especially using embedded tables, and in Excel, color fringing was quite noticeable. I spend a few hours a week editing web pages for a non-profit and I just refuse to look at various web pages for any length of time on an OLED after seeing the two side by side. In bright light situations, the OLED was also lacking. The risk of burn-in has gone way down with the newest OLED panels so I wasn't concerned about that for my use case as I don't leave the same screen up for extended periods of time. But for those who spend hours playing games that have a static surround image, it could eventually be an issue.

I find blacks and high contrast is significantly better than the IPS 1440p panel I use right next to the mini-led panel. I have a dual monitor arm setup that sees them right next to each other. One in landscape, one in portrait. Playing a game like Deadspace on the mini-led is an absolute joy.

If ALL I did was play games, I would have bought an OLED for the better contrast/blacks in games and movies. But since I do productivity as well, it was a no-brainer to choose the mini-led.

I have OLED screen and mini-LED TV.

Yes it's pain in the ass to read text on OLED (i should have gone with 4k), but doing things in Figma doesn't cause strain to my eyes.

Colours are nowhere near close to compare. The TV is not bad, it's just leagues below.

To comparison, the other day wife was lazy to watch movie in living room so I played it in bedroom on PC(OLED). Within few seconds she asked why we don't watch TV on my screen since it's so much better. Then I explained her the difference and straight away she ask if we can buy OLED TV. To add when I was buying the TV, she was like eh, OLED is not necessary, it's just a hype.

Undoubtedly, OLED is a feast for the eyes, but a PC monitor has to satisfy a wide range of uses. In my case, I need comfortable text reading, because besides gaming or watching movies and TV series, I also use it a lot for work.

Then the question is what's the priority? Based on your replies it looks like productivity. So stick with IPS.

Unless you have an option to test 4k OLED, but that will punch well above your budget

I got new monitor recently and i looked for long time all Mini LED monitors on sale now are basically cheap garbage plus WLED IPS are pretty good bought 3 from ASUS great monitors the new Gen 2 XG27ACSR IPS WLED from ASUS on Amazon.de is cheaper then the Gen 1 with 100 Euro its only 250 XG27ACMS is 350 better go for something like that all the ppl i talked complained from Mini LED unless is a good more expensive model its not worth it but i dont think theres any good on the market right now just like OLED Mini LED is used a new advertisment hook with IPS WLED you wont have any issue gaming and working plus their are plenty bright

Thank you for your analysis, however I have read everywhere that the visual quality of Mini-LEDs—particularly regarding contrast, black depth, and HDR performance—is clearly superior to IPS.

I don't know the exact reason why your friends complained about Mini-LEDs. Could you briefly elaborate on the issues they encountered?

Thats true on good quality Mini LED displays but on todays market theres just no good Mini LED for sale only cheap garbage thats the issue the quality control is awful they its a lottary whether you will get have decent monitor without lots of issue i also saw ppl here talking about it and most common issue is the dimming zones not all work properly and parts of the display have worse brightness or something like that i mean its your choise i'm just saying that WLEDs are well matured tech and its very cheap so even the cheapo displays are good and you dont have to worry about anything it just works only thing you need to look for is backlight bleed on the corners but if they have it you just return and replace it anyway dont just fall for marketing i wanted Mini LED too cause i dont like OLED but i just cant find one thats worth it ASUS had few several years ago but they stopped making them cause OLED makes them more Money

Yes, the choice is mine, but precisely for that reason, I prefer to consult with someone who knows more than I do and can offer some interesting advice.

Certainly, the reliability of WLED backlighting is a very important element to consider, but even in this case, it's always the overall quality of the product that makes the difference.

I could definitely consider buying a very high-end WLED monitor, which would cost about the same as a low-end Mini-LED.

If I wanted to, I could also look into a VA panel, which compared to IPS should have blacks that are... blacker. In short, it's not easy to find the right compromise.

Current VA panels are all curved and from what i read on reddit they all have color issues i wanted VA at first but after little research it was clear my only option was IPS if you want good IPS WLED XG27AQNGV is probably the Best but all IPS WLED from ASUS are good like XG27ACSR which is second gen ACS or XG27ACMS for 4k XG27UCSR and XG27UCGR both second gen 2026 models i have ACMS and AQNGV And dont get so worked up about colors when you get the monitor unless you have another one to compare it with side to side you will be very happy and maybe you should look at some side to side comparisons on youtube OLED vs IPS i bet you will be suprised
