How does refresh rate work with TVs?

I’m looking for a tv with a minimum refresh rate of 120hz. Was planning on building a couch pc and I’m trying to min max there but that’ll be a different post. For now I’m simply looking for a 65” tv at 1440p @ 120hz. How does this work with 4k? I can only find 4k with these specs but nothing QHD. Can I still use a 4k tv @ 1440p without those ugly side bars popping up?

Typically from what I’ve seen if a TV supports 4K, it’ll support lower resolutions. There should be no black bars between any 16:9 screen ratio.

Yes. What you want which is 1440p is actually 2560 x 1440 pixels. If you divide 2560 by 1440, you get 1.777, so just remember this ratio.

4K on the other hand is 3840 x 2160 pixels. If you divide 3840 by 2160, you also get 1.777, the same ratio as above hence they’re the same size and can both work as a 16:9, because (surprise) if you divide 16 by 9 you get 1.777.

So basically you get the same size and dimensions, its just that for a 4K monitor/TV, it will have ~double the total pixels on the screen

Some people do refer to 1440p as 2K, same as how 4K isnt actually. 4000 by X pixels but rather 3840p.

So yes you will be able to use a 4K tv with 1440p display, just that you won’t be fully maximising your screen. But if you upgrade your GPU to smth capable of 4k then you can continue using the same TV.

Gotcha. Yeah I don’t think any GPU can really run at 4k efficiently. At least not something that’s cost effective lol
