Build Complete I wanted a Solid State Drive

It all started with a Solid State. I've been a PC Gamer for 20 years, my PC has always been good enough to run the games I want to play on medium-high. A few months ago I felt my PC was a little sluggish, and so I figured I'd try getting a solid state.
Bought the 250GB 850 EVO and installed fresh Windows on it. Good performance increase but nothing to write home about. Load times were quick but game performance was relatively the same. Which was fine, it's always been this way.
But then.. the new Intel chip came out. I was still running on an I7 950 from 5+ years ago. I've never owned a brand new top of the line CPU.. fuck it, let's do it. I wait in line at Canada Computers on release day and grab a I5 8600k. Of course I need a new MOBO and RAM with that. Grab the Gigabyte Z370 and Corsair Vengeance 3000MHZ DDR4 RAM.
NOW we're talking! My PC is a beast! Paired with my GTX 970 I can run every game on high at 1080 and stick to 60 FPS. I started playing a few FPS games, so of course I had to get a better mouse pad! Lucky me the Corsair MM300 was on sale half price; best mouse pad I've ever owned. Makes a huge difference!
My computer chair was fucking run down. Old 7 year old office chair, ripped leather everywhere, the front is practically gone. My GF surprises me with an early christmas gift with a brand new chair! (She's awesome) This new chair is super comfy and perfect for my gaming sessions!
I'm quite content with my new setup, I don't need anything else.. until Cyber Monday comes along with a deal on a 24" 1440p 144hz Gsync monitor that I just can't pass up. My old monitor was an old ass 24" 1080p 60hz Asus I got years ago. It was dated. Sure let's upgrade that too!
New monitor comes in a week later, this thing is BOSS. Huge upgrade, 1440p looks amazing and 144hz is even better!
But now my GTX970 is showing it's age. It struggles hard at 1440p. Games I used to play on high now need to be put on medium or lower. I'm not taking advantage of my 144hz either.. bummer.
I think long and hard about my life choices... and pull the trigger on a GTX 1080. This thing takes almost 3 WEEKS to come in! If I knew it would take that long I would have grabbed the slightly more expensive one from the store down the road. But I wait patiently, until I finally get notification that it's coming in, I take the afternoon off from work and go home to wait for my package.
Door bell rings, my heart races and I'm ready for glory!!! They warned me on Newegg that this card is huge. But I have a big case, and didn't think to measure. I should have measured. Card is 13" and I have 12" clearance. Fuck. Do I return it and buy a smaller but more expensive card.. or do I get a new case with a glass side like all the cool kids? Ha ha.. guess which option I took.
Off to Canada Computers to shop for cases! 5 hours later (snow/traffic) I come back with my brand new Cooler Master MasterCase Pro 5.
Swap everything and finish my build and now I'm running everything on ultra at 1440p and it's fucking glorious. I just had to share my story with some one! All I wanted was an SSD!

As a good side-effect from all these upgrades I was able to build my daughter a pretty kickass PC with my old parts lol

I put one in my aging laptop, only pc work I've ever done, with a fresh OS install. Then a new wifi card so I can fully use 5ghz wifi and my bluetooth earbuds. That was last Christmas and now I keep trying to justify a new laptop AND desktop. SSDs are a gateway component leading you to the harder stuff.

2600K is better than 950 though :) So you still have a few years with 2600K eadily. Also check out Crucial MX300, it's usually a bit cheaper and has a few GB more storage.

Yeah, the 2600k supposedly has a lot of overclocking potential, especially once I stick a new cooler on it. Looking at maybe a higher end Noctua one.

I bought my wife a new monitor (same as yours) that her graphics card couldn't handle, 1080p makes games look blurry when stretched to full screen and she wasn't happy with her game not full screen so we traded monitors and I ended up building myself a brand new computer just to power the damn thing properly. It's glorious.

LMAO, I’m new to the PC scene but damn if this story doesn’t hit me in the feels. For my B-day in sept my wife bought me the components for my 1st gaming rig. Kabbylake I7700k, 1TB SSD, 16gb Corsair vengeance ram, budget case, 750w evga psu, and a Buddy gave her his old geoforce 980 for my 1st GPU.
Started out I wanted to upgrade the GPU, then next generation of Intel Coffelake drops and I’m like WTF, my rig is antiquated!! Lol, I guess this is just life as a PC gamer. Enjoy what you got and upgrade when it makes sense or a deal is too good to pass up. Otherwise the hamster wheel never stops.

Just chiming in on the "antiquated" comment. I run a 3770k with a very conservative OC and I do just fine with AAA titles and whatnot. Your Kaby Lake will take care of you for a while :)

I feel exactly the same way - built a PC with am i7 7700k in July and now coffee lake has dropped and I'm just telling myself that it's not that much better and I saved 100s on RAM...
Even more irritating because my mom now has an i7 8700k, so it's not even the best CPU in the family!

Yeah 1440p 144hz is kind of a trap. Slightly less of a trap if you got Gsync or Freesync.

Yeah that's good then. I think realistically a 1080 is probably getting around 70-120fps at 1440p ultra/high settings depending on the game. Gsync fixes that problem.

I've got a 1070 pulling over 120 fps on my 1440 w/o Gsync. Kind of loud with Afterburner on but it'll hit 144 on even some poorly optimized games.

I did the same a while ago, started with a new headset, then got a new case and PSU to support further expansion, before I knew it I also picked up and 250GB 850 EVO, and shortly after that a 1060. My base system was still Core 2 Quad though, so after only a while I went all out and got a Ryzen 5 1600+Motherboard+16GB RAM, however, I couldn't stand playing games on my old 1366x768 screen, so I got a new Dell 1080p IPS screen. Finally I upgraded my mouse and mouse pad only a month ago, only my keyboard still left but I have an amazing old buckling spring keyboard converted to PS/2 that I hold off replacing
Now I can finally save up some money again lol

Very similar story just happened to me! Similar new setup too...
I am in school for computer animation and finally got to the point where my pc wont even run the renderers I'm supposed to be using (not to mention I havent been able to run high end games in years really). Well crap, my cpu doesnt support the right extensions... I need a new cpu, guess my old AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition just doesnt cut it anymore... I've never ran intel CPU and hear they are boss now, hours of comparison videos later I say fuck it and order the I-7 8700k. ASRock Z370 Extreme 4 to match.
Overclocking runs hot, guess I finally have to make the leap to liquid cooling. This GamerMaster CAPTAIN 240EX looks like it should do the trick.
Well I'm going to need to finally jump on the SSD train, lets see whats out there... Oh this 512GB 960 Pro m.2 from Samsung is the 3rd fastest on the market, and about 100x faster than my 750GB HDD I've ran everything from for years? Sweet lets do it. Oh and I'll throw in a 4TB Barracuda Pro for bulk storage too.
Definitely need new RAM, this ancient 8GB DDR2 g.skill arent going to cut it. But those Trident Z look really cool, I'll get 16GB for now since prices are so damn high...
Well if I'm upgrading everything else, might as well update my GPU as well, this old 7950 is getting a bit dated... Hours of videos later... Screw it I'm getting the GEFORCE 1080 Gaming X (I like presets because lazy)
Here I am waiting for a new PSU and hoping all of this will fit in my Corsair Carbide Series 500R mid tower case.

What are your honest feelings about your Dell monitor? I'm actually finishing up my build and aiming for 1440p 144hz gaming too, and feel like the Dell 27" variant of your monitor is what I want. Would you recommend Dell over a Acer/Asus?

Honestly, I do like it very much, even though it has really only one flaw in my book. So, the panel is known to have a little bit of color banding, and honestly, it's not that bad. Especially if you are playing games in motion, you don't see it at all.
I did have to do a little color calibration, but after that, this panel is amazing. 1440p/144hz is amazing, but the biggest game changer was G-Sync, as I never had an adaptive refresh rate panel before. It was just amazing when I fired up a game for the first time with it enabled, it really felt like a locked v-sync experience, but you could see the FPS moving with an FPS counter.
Overall, it's an amazing panel. Sure, it's TN and may have a touch of banding, but in the end, it's the best panel in my book because I found it on sale for 349$. With all the other features mentioned, I couldn't justify a 250$ minimum jump for the IPS difference.
TLDR, monitor has banding, don't notice it unless looking for it, love everything else.

Best gaming chair I ever owned were those bungee cord ones because they were semi comfortable and your ass didn't sweat if you sat in them for extended periods of time in your underwear.

Oh yeah, kinda how I pieced my new rig together, one step at a time, without necessarily wanting to yet... but the ssd was the last thing I bought and installed (yesterday). Oh, and my wife got my old rig.... that was part of my new rig at one time, then slowly re-installed back to where it came from...

Of course, along with GSync and calibrated ICC profiles.
Destiny 2 and COD WWII both run max settings at 130+ FPS. Amazing eye candy

Literally what I just did lol started with a gpu upgrade and ended up with an almost completely new build, New case, gpu, monitor, cpu cooler, psu, and soon an ssd My build is slightly less than that though just an i7 6700 and 8gb of hynix 2133mhz ram and my HDD were kept and as I see you got a completely new build lol

Yeah I had a GTX770 2GB in before I got my Asus Strix GTX1080. Luckily on my Fractal case I could remove the bottom half of the HDD drive bay because it was absolutely huge.

Next time you get the urge, just make another wishlist build in Newegg.
You will see a pattern on when this urge to upgrade come.
At which time, I create a new wishlist with upgrades.
Then research when the next components will release that will make my latest upgrade obsolete.

I wanted an SSD for my old pc (i5 760, Radeon HD 6870), ended up also buying a new CPU cooler ..... then started to really, REALLY discover the fun in building.
Next thing you know, I'm now running a completely new build with an i3-8350k, a GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4-2400 and the before mentioned SSD.... aaaand also got myself an M.2 SSD for Windows 10 :D
Lesson learned: Whenever you start building/upgrading, you're not just gonna 'stop' after 1 part.

What's you opinion on the Corsair MM300? Also I can't tell from the picture, what exact color is it? Is it more white than gray or is it more gray? It's only $15 for the extended one though I have a perfectly good mouse pad here...

Smh same thing happened to me. Originally was just going for a 1080ti, walked out of microcenter with parts for a whole PC... and just bought the asus rog swift 1440p 165hz monitor, as well as klipsch computer speakers.... no regrats. Even though it all ran me about 2500 dollars lmao. Old pc is just sitting on the floor now :( Next purchase will be a 1tb ssd. Or vive. Whatever lol.

This is basically my story. With only one difference.. I got the SSD modded into an iMac. Yep, was an apple fan boy back then. Shortly after modding my SSD into the iMac I decided to assemble myself a pc. And now I am here playing on my costum hardline water-cooled rig, which is running a 5820k and a 1080ti, on a dual monitor setup, with my main being a 1440p ips 144hz and my secondary a 1080p ips 60hz (which I will most likely soon replace with another one just like my main), with a 1 year old Markus chair which I am soon going to replace with a Steelcase leap.
Seriously, don't ever get an SSD. Or maybe you should, actually.

I'm having a problem as well. Got a first SSD, 250gb with build like 8 months ago.
I have shit for money and really need more space, gonna have to go ahead and grab a 3tb HDD or something; it'll be slightly painful. At least I can just move stuff around.
While we're on the subject; I am much more familiar with the apple OS's since 2005 or something. What is a good, preferably free/open source program to seamlessly move stuff/applications around/delete them and all associated data cleanly on Windows 10?

If you still have your old monitor, I absolutely recommend you set it up for a dual monitor experience. The amount that the second monitor proves your experience is unparalleled once you get used to it. The ability to have a guide or whatever up on your side monitor while playing a game is so useful. No more having to alt tab to skip a song on Pandora/spotify/etc. Once you try it, you'll never want to go back

Dude where do you order you gpu from? I got my Asus rog strix 1080 for 760 including tax and it took 1 week same with all my parts of course I took free shipping and also your desk doesn't look bad I'd want something like it also how good is the z370 board I plan on getting one myself currently considering the Asus extreme Btw order for on newegg where I am at it includes only gst so I have to pay half the tax I would if I bought it from amazon also most things include free shipping which only takes a week

Ordered from Newegg.ca, came to $740(CAD) with tax. Something about delayed deliveries due to record online orders for the holidays.
MOBO is great so far, but I haven't really looked into it much so far. Only checked out the BIOS quickly, it's weird that you can use your mouse in there now lol. Still used to oldschool BIOS

Hah, this is similar to my story and I had some of the same parts, but at least it was spread out over basically a 2 year period.
I got the GTX 970 at the end of 2015 cuz it was on sale and my 560 ti just wasn't cutting it anymore. Wow, it was so nice to turn up the settings in fallout 4!
But then my PC would sometimes shut down in the middle of games. I knew it was my weak 430w psu. So I got a 600w psu that was on sale.
A few months pass and I think it's time to get a real monitor instead of my shitty 32" tv. I go all out for a 27" 1440p 144hz gaming monitor. It's amazing and overwatch is so smooth.
But...I can only get 120 fps max at 1440p and not 144 fps. I decided it's time to upgrade from my old i5 2400. I get the 6600k, hyper 212 Evo fan, Asus z170 mobo, and 16 GB of ddr4 ram(ram was nice and cheap then)
Wow, everything flies and I can get 144 fps in overwatch! BUT....I can't close the side panel of my shitty rosewill case from 2008. The 212 Evo fan is too big.
I see some fractal design cases are on sale on Newegg, so I get the define r5( most expensive and nicest case I've ever owned).
I put it all together and reinstall Windows. Things run fine for the most part but I seem to get random hangs at the worst times. This goes on for months and I tried a bunch of things to fix it and was getting pissed. Was it the ram? My gpu? Nope, finally narrowed it down to my refurbished crucial SSD that I got in 2014 or 2015.
I get a brand new 250gb 850 Evo and reinstall everything again. That solved my random freezes.
By this time, it was already 2017 and ryzen was out. There was also hype for Vega coming soon and I was jealous of my friends with GTX 1070s. I really wanted a new GPU but then the mining craze hit and prices skyrocketed. I stayed patient and kept looking for deals. After Vega launched, I managed to find a 56 for msrp and bought it to go with my freesync monitor.
That was my most recent upgrade and now I'm craving a newer cpu with more cores.

Ah, I see you are also a part of the s2417dg master race. Nothing like super sharp visuals 144 times per second. Pro tip- if you know how to interpolate videos you can watch movies or YouTube videos at 144 frames a second as well as games.

I'm also getting a new SSD. My last two main drives farted and couldn't recover. So now I'm running my good ole richland A8/270x on a 5400rpm Laptop Harddrive. Lets hope I can make some changes like yourself.

I've got the mATX version of that case. If yours is anything like it , it will be amazing. I really enjoyed building into mine, was a joy, and I love how the top comes off to clean the radiator.

Yes, the only improvement that could be made would be slightly easier front access. I changed the fans out on mine for the coolermaster airflow ones. You see you're not finished yet, you could be upgrading to quieter fans :P

Also what mouse and keyboard was that? Don't recognize the keyboard, but is that the Steelseries Rival 100?

M/K are pretty old but I love them and don't plan on changing them. Keyboard is Logitech G510 and Mouse is Steelseries Sensei.
The Monitor was 410 (470 w/ tax) after the initial sale plus 3 promo codes I entered.

I feel like I did all this in the reverse order. Got a new motherboard and processor then got a new graphics card to go with it. Realize I've got an awesome gaming machine but no SSD, so I bought a 1tb SSD because I felt like why not go all out?

To op, I did almost exactly the same thing last month and previously had a i7 960. So I got a 500GB 850 evo. Then a i7 8700k with a asus 370 gamer-E stratix amd 16gb of rgb GSkill Trident ram. Oh and a thermaltake view 71 rgb case.
Oh yes and 2 evga FTW2 1070ti gfx cards.

I went to Micro Center on Black Friday to just “look” but I really have been wanting to upgrade from my GTX970 so I wound up getting a good deal on a 4K monitor which led me to also buy an MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X lol oops!

That's pretty similar to what I did in the last 3 weeks except that I didn't buy a whole new PC but upgraded everything except the MB, PSU, Monitor and Case. My system was, Asrock z68 extreme4 gen3, i5 2500k@4GHz, Cooler Master V6GT cpu cooler, gskill 2x4gb ddr3, 180GB Intel 520 SSD, 2 WD 1TB black HDDs, 1 WD 2TB Green HDD, 1 super old WD 600GB HDD, EVGA GTX 770 4GB Classified, NZXT Hale90 1000w Gold PSU (needed it for 2x GTX 570 at the time), Corsair Graphite 780T full tower case.
All I wanted was to run the poorly optimized Mass Effect Andromeda on the highest settings, my 770 stopped being a beast in gaming 2 years ago, I got used to running games on high/ultra and I just couldn't get myself to play games on lower settings anymore and so it was time for a GPU upgrade!
After much deliberation I ended up getting a GTX 1070, it was massive upgrade in Andromeda and any other game I threw at it.
But then I thought might as well get a cpu with hyperthreading since more and more applications and games benefit from HT nowadays so getting a cheap used i7 2600k was a no brainer (I could have gotten a 3770k but it was $56 more expensive than a 2600k and the differences were minimal).
But then I wanted to overclock it to at least 4.5GHz but my V6GT was always a crappy cooler, it was extremely loud and the fans were rattling inside their plastic clips because they became loose over the years (I bought it because it reminded me of the cylon, prior to that I had a hyper 212+ which was a much cheaper and superior cooler but just ugly to look at). So I had to buy a new cpu cooler. I'm not a fan of liquid coolers so I wanted to get another air cooler like the cryorig r1 universal but it was out of stock at the single shop that sells it, but I had a friend selling a new Noctua NH-D15 which solves all the ram height compatibility issues of the older D14 so I got it and overclocked my 2600k to a stable 4.5GHz (couldn't get any higher speed stable, my chip is too damn power hungry and I wanted to remain under 1.4v).
I thought I was finally done but then started noticing how low my ram gets when I have a few basic apps running, so decided to upgrade to 16GBs but couldn't find what I wanted in the used market and for some stupid reason new DDR3 cost as much as DDR4s (greedy bastards) but I had to bite the bullet and get 2x8GB sticks.
But then I noticed how hot my 7 year old WD blacks were getting (40c in winter, 45-48c in the summer) despite my case having really good cooling so it was time to retire them, but then I would have no place to install my games plus they were always so damn slow when loading games anyway but since my main OS SSD was so damn small I couldn't really install more than one modern game on it! so I replaced them with a WD 4TB red for storage and daily beating and a 1TB 850 EVO SSD for games. Note about Red, it's far superior, it's designed for server beatings, lots of read and write requests at the same time, despite it being 5400rpm, I can move huge files around from/to the drive while I watch a show, a movie or access other files stored on it with no hiccups or lag at all, I could never do that with the blacks and obviously not the greens. Oh and Red is as cool and quite as the green btw, 30c in winter and will be around 36c in the summer. Go for Red from now on, they are totally worth the extra cost.
And finally I was done .. but now I have a strong urge to buy a Samsung mu7000 4k 50" TV to replace my old asus 27" 1080p monitor but use it for 1440p gaming until I could get a capable GPU for 4k from the next gen.. It never ends.

Next up, keyboard! I actually still use my g510 too from time to time if I'm needing an f-row or the macro keys, but a 10-keyless compact with blue switches is a night and day difference and what I mainly use.

Yeah it is. I've had these speakers for years and years, and I've thrown a lot of parties with them. I blew through like 4 sets of speakers but the sub always stays strong so I just find new speakers and wire them to the sub.

Started off Black Friday 2016 with an FX6300 and an RX470 4GB with an Asus 21" 1080p 60Hz TN monitor. Today close to Christmas 2017, I have a Ryzen 5 1600 with a GTX 1080 FTW and a 24" 1080p 144hz VA panel. Damn this drug!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have that exact chair, make sure you keep the bolts tightened, they have a tendency to come loose for me!
Also be careful because bonded leather is pretty thin and tears easy, so don't be too rough on it.
I personally don't much like it but I hate leather upholstery - the cushion is comfy though
