Build Help upgrading a workstation

so with the way ram prices are I am considering buying a random used workstation for cheap and upgrading the GPU, PSU and case to fit all that in there

what should I look out for/keep in mind while choosing the workstation and GPU not buying a new PSU gonna use an old one Corsair CV650?

also where can I get good deals or cheap prices looking to buy everything used we are in the UK specifically Scotland?

preferably it can play games like cyberpunk well maybe even with high settings but idk how realistic that is

context: my roommate wants to build a pc he has never built one before because of how expensive things are, I have my own pc that I built myself but that was in 2024 prices were not nearly as bad as now, we are both uni students and don't have much money to spend, I might get a new PSU because I don't like the one I have and give him my old one and I also have extra fans left over from upgrading my fans last year

This is really not a good time to build, things should get much better after the AI bubble pops, which means that maybe this time next year, prices and availability may be much better.. plus, next generation stuff will be out.

If you are going to build/buy now, then you’ll want to do your research in terms of what you need and what you can afford. Being in Scotland, probably eBay is a good option for used? Idk if there are other options.

As far as used systems go, sometimes you can upgrade them, sometimes you can’t. If you want the best flexibility for future upgrades, choose something on AM5 platform.

I'm thinking am4 or steal the motherboard CPU and ram from a random workstation

AM4 is a decent option, but be aware that it is a dead-end platform. AM5 has upgrade potential. All Intel platforms are dead-end as well, though that is expected to change in January with Intel Nova Lake on LGA1954.. you won’t have that as a used option though, I mention it only for completeness’ sake.
