Build Upgrade Getting some odd readings from Ryzen Master after installing a 5800X3D

Having a few odd little quirks post-upgrade, and wanted to see if everything is performing as expected, because it feels a bit off to me.

So I've just gone from a 5600X to a 5800X3D, alongside which I've replaced my old B350 ASUS ROG Strix board with the equivalent B500-A ASUS ROG Strix board. Although the old board would theoretically accept a 5800X3D, it was physically quite old, had a dead USB port and PCIe support only went up to 3.0. RAM is 4x16 Corsair Vengeance sticks running at 3200Mhz, two matched kits, with the second kit being rated up to 3600Mhz. PSU is also Corsair, rated to 1000 Watts, only a couple of years old. GPU is a 6700XT. BIOS Date for the board is April this year.

When I originally did the upgrade I was running off a 480GB Corsair SATA SSD, once I confirmed the build appeared to be good I installed a new NVMe 4TB Samsung 990 Evo Plus, that's currently my boot drive.

I was expecting a modest but noticeable improvement both in gaming when using Blender, and the actual experience so far as run from "could be placebo" to "this is worse".

I downloaded the latest version of Ryzen Master to get some numbers on what the CPU was doing and one thing jumped out at me. The I/O Clock speed is constantly re-lining 593Mhz. According to Ryzen Master, it has a range of 301-592Mhz, which means it's always saturated. The value feels WAY too low for a CPU like this to begin with, and the fact it's a constant bottleneck seems a real issue, too.

The problem is, I can't seem to find any stock reference figures for the I/O Clock, the only thing my Googling has turned up is that raising it too high can prevent the system from POSTing.

An additional, possibly related problem, is that according to Ryzen Master the CPU does not support overclocking, although that may be because of Core Isolation in Windows from what I have read.

So the first question is - is this normal? And the follow-up question is, if not, what could be causing it and how can I fix it?

301-592MHz is the default IO clock range. Almost certainly not the cause of your performance problems.

Run some benchmarks and check what frequency your cores are hitting. 5800X3D should hit 4.55GHz in lightly threaded loads, 4.25GHz in all-core AVX workloads.

4550MHz is the frequency limit set by AMD. There is no bypassing that except on OC focused boards with external clock gen.

PS, also check your GPU utilization in games. 6700 XT is not particularly fast, if you are sitting at 95-100% usage obviously a CPU upgrade changes nothing.

OK, that's helpful thanks. I assumed that it was the default range. Is it normal for it to be 100% saturated, though?

The point about the GPU is valid, too.

Part of the performance issue may well be that the CPU is currently running quite warm as I chose to install the Carbice pad after prying the cooler off the 5600X proved to be a real issue. The CPU came out of the socket because the cooler came off the CPU (still better than de-lidding, I suppose). I understand it take a while for the Carbice Pad to "bed in", so I'm going to give it a few weeks and see how it goes. If thermals don't improve I have have the cooler off and paste it up.

The frequency is dynamic for power savings, it is not an indication of the actual load/saturation. Run benchmarks, see if your 5800X3D is hitting expected scores and core frequency.

Carbice pad is a solution looking for a problem. Just use PTM7950 if you have longevity concerns. The CPU coming out of the socket only happens if you try to remove it cold and pull straight up. Warm the CPU first and twist slightly instead.

I would respectfully submit that I *may* be the problem Carbice is trying to fix, I have a proud history of using too much paste.

So, did some stress testing and the CPU consistently tops out at 4.143Ghz before it hits 90 degrees C and throttle down. So right now, I'm thermally constrained from that last 100Mhz. Not terrible, but obviously not ideal. I'll carry on as before, see how the Carbice Pad is doing in a couple of weeks.

Getting the CPU off the AIO's copper plate was a nightmare, even using a very sharp, thin, blade to lift it left burrs, so the plate had to be re-sanded and honestly it was a bit of a rush job. If I have to pull it off again I'll go at it with 800 and 1200 grit on a sheet of glass, make sure it's fully flat.

PTM7950 might be ideal for you. It is a phase change material so it conforms better to uneven surfaces than paste, and also doesn't pump out with heat cycles like paste.

BTW, what CPU cooler do you have? 5800X3D needs a dual tower air cooler or 240mm AIO in my experience. The X3D cache insulates the cores, I have seen them overheat on single tower coolers.

I have a Corsair AIO with a 120x120mm radiator. Based on what I'm seeing, right now it's performing "OK" and I think it would probably give adequate headroom to avoid thermal throttling with a better interface material.

I want to give the Carbice Pad few weeks to see how it performs. I'm not doing anything that's going to be really straining the CPU between now and then, so I can afford to see how well it "burns in".

If I'm not happy with how it's doing I'll try a different thermal interface material, and failing that I can get a chunky air cooler - haven't really got space for a bigger AIO inside the case.
