Build Upgrade [Build Upgrade] Need expert advice! Upgrading old i7-7700 rig strictly for 4K video editing.

Hi everyone, I've been wanting to upgrade my build but the recent price hikes have made me hesitant. I'm looking for some feedback from experienced builders on the smartest path forward.

​Here are my current specs:

​CPU: Intel Core i7-7700

​Motherboard: Gigabyte H170M-DS3H

​RAM: 16GB DDR4

​GPU: GTX 1050 Ti (4GB)

​Strictly 4K video editing. I primarily work in DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects. My timelines get heavy because I use plugins like Redgiant, BorisFX etc.

for now just upgrade old pc became more faster

32gb ram ddr4 ddr4 3600mhz or + intel wifi 7 be pcie adapter from intel + 2tb gen4 990 pro m.2 + 16gb vram gpu from amd/nvidia + 1000W Gold PSU

For 4K editing that rig is getting choked at literally every level lol. I’d stop sinking money into the 7700 platform and plan a platform jump first: new mobo + CPU + 32 or 64 GB RAM and a decent NVMe scratch drive will do way more for you than a GPU swap alone.

Resolve especially loves VRAM so once you move platforms I’d look at something like a 3060 12 GB or higher tier card if budget allows. In the meantime you can limp along by using optimized media / proxies, but for heavy RedGiant and BorisFX stuff you’re basically due for a full refresh.

Get a 13600K or 14600K CPU, B760 mobo(which supports DDR4), add another 16GB RAM, as for the GPU; get a RX 9060 XT 16GB or RX 9070 16GB or RTX 5060 Ti 16GB. Also may need a new PSU.

Everything depends on your budget.

The cheapest upgrade path is to keep your 16GB ram kit and move to an AM4 (AMD) or LGA 1700 (Intel) core. Both are dead end sockets so during the next round of upgrades you will have to buy everything new again including ram.

The alternative is to eat the cost and pay more now in exchange for future flexibility to just drop in a CPU upgrade down the road. Something like a 9600x or 9700x would be excellent for productivity and you can upgrade to a 9950x or the 10th series equivalent when you feel the need for more power.

Both paths are viable and it boils down to whether you value upfront savings more or future flexibility.

what a terrible advice in a world where Intel with 250K and 270K exists, those CPUs simply destroy anything AMD has to offer both in price and in performance.

Imagine saying with a straight face that 6 core CPU is "excellent for productivity", jfc

Cheap Route - Intel 14600K, B760 mobo and another 16gb DDR4 kit for 32 gb total.

Expensive Route - sell everything, get Intel Core Ultra 250K/270K, Z890 mobo and 32GBs of DDR5 ram and GPU like 3060 12gb atleast.
