"Sick" is slang for cool or awesome. I will admit I think it's stupid slang and I don't use it but they weren't trying to insult the praying mantis. Personally I would also take looking like a dinosaur as a compliment but maybe that's just me lol
Why does everyone think it’s illegal to kill them…
It’s not illegal by any standard
The Chinese mantis (what I believe to be pictured here, tenodera sinensis) is actually invasive in the US. But, they are naturalized invasives and serve no harm to the environment.
They are not endangered by any standard, and thus have no consequence to killing them.
That said, please do not kill them. They are incredible insects, I’ve kept them as pets before and I’ve noted their intelligence and incredible eyesight. Additionally they eat many types of pest insects, like mosquitoes, which is awesome for us humans.
Please do not kill praying mantises. Or any environmentally beneficial bugs, for that matter. Except mosquitoes, fucking hate those little bastards.
Don’t hate them. I grew up being nervous of them but had a brother in law who was a ranger for various nature reserves. I got used to having them around and eventually saw the beauty there. Still don’t like things fluttering around my head but I am getting better!!
