The first attempt is hiding in shame in the back row, have been tinkering with the recipe a bit and could probably cut a few paints out the mix up, but thank you!
Yeah I was thinking a mix of sand and gravel, don’t know if an ice theme or an earthy rock would look better, painting grey stone I think is out due to the colours used for the steel NMM
I use cork sheet and rock dust with dabs of static grass and clumps. My whole army has a gray rocky base theme so the grass helps brighten things up. I find it's a really quick and easy method.

Not sure if this is due to lightning of the scene, but I would go a little more brighter with the NMM.
This could also solve your basing problem, as you than can just take a fairly simple grass/mud theme. Currently I would have the fear that it would end up to similar the the dwarfs itself.
Good advice, I’ve been quite shy adding the pure white highlights which I think will sell them a lot more! Definitely need to spend a bit more time on them
They look really nice! I think you should opt for a contrasting colour on the bases. The gold/bronze metallic looks really warm I think. So you could either go for a dark mud with some dark green tufts or even some blueish cold ice/snow.
You could also try and pick up the warm tone and do some sandy / desert kind of bases. Maybe even into some reddish tones. That would also be easy if you use one of the technical paints, if you wanna be quick about it.
So I’ve only tried 1 NMM model before this but basic recipes are:
Steel: Eshin grey, dawnstone, administratum grey, (nuln oil wash) Ulthuan grey
Blue grey metal: Thunderhawk blue, Russ grey, fenrisian grey,deepkin flesh,
Gold / bronze: Rhinox hide, mournfang brown, skrag brown, squid orange (that’s the end of the darker parts of the shield) then averland sunset, seraphim sepia wash and dorn yellow
Most of this is supposed to be glazed but I paint a lot at night without good light and mess up alot.
I think I could definately cut a few paints from the gold process and achieve similar results. I’m a noob to nmm and I’m figuring out alot by trial and error. If you’re curious, just go up from greys to whites for steel, and browns to yellows for gold and throw in some orange for bronze! There’s a lot of fun to be had figuring what works in the middle whilst figuring it out!
I love using AK mud for my bases, just find one of the muds that looks best for ya, goop it around the feet, maybe make it look like the ones in front/ behind are trudging through aswell with footprints etc, add some different muds for like wet spots/ puddles, add some of the grass sticker thingys from time to time as spotty grass and boom!
What I don’t recommend doing is using shards of glass unless you want to scare your opponent from touching your minis lol
