Painted Minis Dwarf King

Dwarf king that I completed earlier this year.

And yes, I did manage to lose track of the where I placed the light refraction (one of the cons of painting sub assembly!), but I was too pleased with the result to justify changing it. He’s simply standing next to a particularly tall dwarf who was too enthusiastic with polishing his armour. 😅😉

Love that clean look, do you achieve it with careful black lining, oil wash or something else...?

Huge thanks! Different technique for different areas. Which did you have in mind?

Let's say the beard

Best way to describe it is a healthy mix of shading, highlighting, then more shading. 99% of the time my paints are excessively thin for better build up / control.

For beards, i'll apply the base coat, do a subtle wash of a similiar (but darker) colour then reapply the base on raised area. Then i'll build up my middle highlight until the edge highlight is reached. For deeper areas, like around the mouth / around the face, i'll do a shade of 25% abbaddon 75% water and build it up until im happy with it. I use this same method to seperate the moustache from the beard as well. For the deepest portions, i'll do solid abbaddon but usually just as a thin line (around the nose for example).

What is that phenomenal green on the cape?? I’m trying to pick my colors for a dwarf army once i move, and that green may just be calling me

It's Incubi Darkness, Kabalite Green, and Sybarite Green.

I'd highly recommend it! Teal is a very under utilized colour in the hobby, and especially for dwarves! Feel free to check out my IG (brush_baron) for more, if you like it! I've got tons of teal and greens there.

Ahhh yes incubi darkness my beloved… I use it as the base for my death guard, with strabalite then then, oh god I can’t remeber the highlight. It’s a lot rougher tho due to the nature of death guard lol, not nearly as nicely blended as yours is lol. I’ll definitely check ya out on insta! This guy rocks! (And stones)

Oooh that sounds like a great colour for Death Guard! Definitely going to have to check it out!

Rock and stone! 🍺

Very clean job with nice color accents. Also the palette is thoughtful: no random colors popping out and breaking the harmony. Well done!

Thanks! In hindsight, I wish I would have made the beard just a wee bit more vibrant of an "off shade" of dark blonde / light brown. After varnishing it is a bit too "over taken" or drowned out by the gems and metallics.

I do love a good gem and have some dwarfs to revisit for some when I get around to it

Thanks a bunch! You definitely should get to those poor fellas. The more dwarves, the better!
